Chapter 6: Scorpion Sting
BONG!
BONG!!
B O N G ! ! !
"WHAT?! HUH?! WHERE'S THE FI - WOAH!" I yelled as I leapt awake, stumbled off the ledge and landed face first onto the ground.
Morning, Tear, Rise messaged me.
Morning.
What on earth are you doing?
Yoga practise. I'm sticking to a new regime.
Rise laughs at my sarcasm and wakes up. The gongs woke everyone apparently. I got out of my spread-eagled position on the hard ground and dusted myself off. Shock leapt out of the clear pool of water (Animus touched to never get dirty and always be the right temperature for SeaWings and never overflow etc) and shook himself, throwing water all over me and Rise, who had leapt down from her ledge.
"Hey!" Rise yelled as she covered her face.
I laughed and looked around the small room for Scorcher. "Where's Scorcher?" I asked.
"She already left, by the looks of it," Shock nodded at the space where Scorcher had slept.
"Blizzard, too," Rise observed, nodding at the snow patch where he had slept.
Sunlight filtered in through the entrance of the corridor, and the candles in the torch sconces along the smooth walls of the gigantic mountain had flickered out. A few grey embers lay on the floor, and it was lightly raining.
"C'mon, we'll be late for breakfast," Shock said, tail-bumping me. "RACE YA!"
"OH WHAT - COME ON! YOU'RE ACTING LIKE RISE!" I yelled after him, but he was already running down the corridor.
Me and Rise looked at each other.
"Three..."
"Two..."
"One..."
"GO!"
Me and Rise immediately raced out of the cave, dashing outside the room and racing towards the prey centre.
The prey centre was already full of dragonets chattering to each other excitedly. Some were screaming at live animals, and chickens, cows, yak, pigs, lizards, anything and everything was running wild.
"Hey, guys!" Shock yelled, his scales settled on his normal navy blue with a lighter blue at the paws. We quickly raced to him. He had saved us a spot next to the fruit tree. I flew up, picked a mango from the tree (Animus touched to have all the fruits sprout from its branches and new ones grow in the place where they were picked, and for the fruit to never go rotten when it was in the tree), and flew back down, landing next to Shock. Rise rose up, picked a mango, glided back down again. I sliced open the yellow fruit with a claw and ate it. Shock had three halibuts in between his arms next to me, and was busy eating one. He tore at the flesh and slimy scales and gulped the whole thing down.
Rise was staring at him while slowly eating her mango with an expression that gave me the impression she had been mentally scarred.
Woah, she messaged me, do all SeaWings eat fish like that?
I dunno, I thought back, ask Shock.
I slices my mango in half and grabbed one half. I placed it in my mouth and chewed. Yummy mango juice filled my mouth and I savoured every last drop of mango on my tongue. I grabbed up the other half and ate that too.
BONG!
BONG!
B O N G !!
"WHAT IS IT WITH THIS PLACE AND 'GET UP GET UP THERE'S A FIRE'?!" I yelled, making my two friends chuckle. "C'mon, we'll be late for class," Rise said, finishing her mango. Shock finished his last two halibuts by gobbling them right down, whole.
"What's our class?" I asked.
"History," Shock groaned. "With the amazing, so-not-a-bore snoozefest, Webs," Rise agreed.
Everyone else was racing to their classes, and only the Jade Winglet had History at this time, so it was just us three.
We ran out of the prey room and raced along the dark corridor, every once in a while lit up by a flickering torch, glowing vibrantly against the shadowed stone.
Suddenly, me and Rise crumpled forward simultaneously and rolled, clutching out heads.
"Woah, what's wrong?!" Shock asked, stopping and staying back for us.
I squeezed my talons into the stone, trying not to scream from pain. I knew me and Rise were seeing the same thing. In no particular order, the visions came along new threads of the future.
Explosion.
History cave.
Dragons entering History cave.
Storm, Scorcher, Blizzard, everyone inside getting murdered by the cruel explosion.
Webs, getting carried away by Sunny.
Each dragonet laying limp, their eyes lifeless and their chest still, the few seconds of horror still plastered on their face.
As fast as the pain had come, it went.
"What. Was. That?" Rise gasped.
"The next few and possibly last minutes of our lives if we don't do something now," I gasped.
We gaped at each other.
"THE HISTORY CAVE!" We yelled and raced toward it.
"What the -" Shock asked as he was left behind. He ran behind us. "What's wrong? What did you guys see?"
"The History cave exploding. We need to evacuate everyone now."
The History cave came into view.
Rise and I yelled as loud as we could: "GET OUT OF THE HISTORY CAVE! YOU'LL DIE!"
"EXCUSE. ME." Webs yelled at us. "WE ARE HAVING A LESSON."
All the students inside (Scorcher, Blizzard, two SkyWings, MudWing, and RainWing we had never seen before) turned towards us. "Please, believe us," I pleaded. "The history cave is going to explode."
Scorcher leant down under her desk to do what looked like...
...scratching her leg?
She was sitting right behind the two SkyWings. She pushed her paw forward for some reason, then stopped leaning and placed both paws on the desk.
That was weird.
"And, tell me, Hybrids, how exactly would you know that?" Webs queried. "IT DOESN'T MATTER HOW WE KNOW, JUST GET EVERYONE OUT OF HERE!" Rise yelled as she grabbed Blizzard and shoved him outside. I grabbed the RainWing and MudWing from their seats and pushed them towards the exit.
"Please," I pleaded, "Run."
They stood their for a second, then ran.
The second SkyWing followed them, casting me a glance. I noticed she had the rare gold scaled underbelly that most SkyWings don't have. She also had some kind of aquamarine bracelet.
Just Scorcher and the SkyWing.
And Webs.
"This WILL go in your History rep -" Webs complained as Rise shoved him outside.
"Time to go, SkyWing," I said as I pulled the flame-coloured dragonet from her seat.
"NO!" Scorcher screamed. "LEAVE HER HERE! LEAVE HER HERE TO DIE!"
Rise gaped at her. "Are you serious? How do you even know she'll -"
Scorcher ran outside, and dragged us with her.
"NOW, RUN!" She screamed.
Rise turned to get the SkyWing, but just then, with impeccable, suspicious timing, and bookshelf flew into the doorway, barricading the SkyWing and trapping her inside.
"Scorcher, what's happening?" I asked my clawmate.
She hissed at the SkyWing and growled violently. "I've waited absolute years for this," she said slowly, peeking through the bookshelf at the SkyWing. "I've waited years to kill you, finally. To make you pay for what you did to my brother." Scorcher ran.
"WAIT -" I screamed, running at the bookshelf.
Slow motion.
I ran at the door. There was silence.
The history cave exploded into a huge fireball and I got blown back, knocked my head onto a torch sconce, and saw no more.
