Aurora Borealis (BookloverInsomnia)
Name: Aurora Borealis
(Common name is super common! Also a little nonsensical. Her mom which we later learn is a night/rain hybrid somehow knows what the Aurora Borealis is despite living in the very far south in the rainforest where such would never occur. And even if she read about it or heard about it somewhere she's still being named after something her mom would overall have no connection to and has likely never even seen in person (in dragon?)
Name reason: her appearance (you'll see)
('You'll see' is my least favourite way to fill out a category, it's not too hard to explain that her appearance resembles the colouration of the Aurora Borealis. We also still don't know Nightsong decided that name in particular.)
Age: it depends when you're asking, but let's just say 4
Gender: female
Sexuality: straight
Tribe(s): equal parts Nightwing, Rainwing, Seawing (yes, it's equal, you'll see)
(Very specific details for no specific reason. This happens a lot with this oc so let's start a counter! Oddly specific details for seemingly no specific reason: 1)
Time period/era: about 30 years after Jade Mountain prophecy, give or take
(Future ocs are very hard to critique, because everyone's interpretation of what happens in the future is different. At the same time that's the cool thing about it.)
Occupation: none so far
(So she's four years old and doesn't do anything? Not a student of some kind or nothing? No participation in any royal duties? If she doesn't have a occupation now what does she hope to do or want to be?)
Looks: Aurora's description is unique to her. Being a tribrid, animus created, she has many striking characteristics. Green so dark it is almost black fades to the rainbows of colors her namesake holds, glowing scales below her eyes and on her wings, taking the place of the star scales of a Nightwing. The colors on her back and wings shift, Rainwing heritage, not something she can control (or the "twinkling" of her star scales). The shifting of colors further pushes her similarity to the heavenly lights. Her eyes are honey colored gold and brown, and she has teardrop scales near her eyes, though no Nightwing powers to speak of. (Oddly specific details for seemingly no specific reason: 2) Her wings and tail are shaped like a Rainwing, body and horns of a Nightwing.
Personality: Aurora, growing up with her mother, gained some of the closed off personality, though not all. Her mother often called her the most extroverted of introverts, randomly blurting out to interrupt any conversation she finds interesting, then becoming embarrassed at herself. Her creation, the animus involvement, was no secret (So... Nightsong/Nightsong's family just... told everyone for some reason? I get not being ashamed of it but was there any real reasoning for it? Not sure what their logic was practically blurting out to the whole kingdom that this new kid in their family was animus created, it seems like all it did was cause Aurora problems.) so while hybrids were becoming more and more accepted in their world, Aury still felt outcasted. This led to most of her introverted behavior. She is kind, though blunt and snarky (which sometimes makes her seem like she's being mean but she has no bad intentions) (Gained some of the traits but not all of them, which traits and what does that mean? Due to lack of explaining, we will never know. Also the fact that she's mentioned to be introverted but likes talking and spending time with others, suggesting she's less of an introvert and more of an ambivert)
Powers/abilities: breathing underwater (she has none of the Nightwing or Rainwing abilities)
(And yet no gills to speak of, and no other abilities? Like, she has no skills or talents outside her tribal powers? We also learn that somehow she is immune to her mother's abilities, this isn't listed. Also she can breath underwater if not with gills but by magical means... but lives in the middle of the Rainforest Kingdom (assuming in the Rainwing Village with her family) and if she doesn't have gills she found this out... how?)
Weapons/items: n/a
Strengths: Empath, intelligent, easy for thicker skinned dragons to get along with (note the "thicker skinned")
(All of these listed things are not explained, so what they mean is anyone's guess. So she's an empath, suggesting she's open to others feelings and is good at sharing them... yet not only does this appear to do nothing for her character as everyone seems to want to stay away from her anyways as she is 'difficult' to get along with suggests she is definitely not empathetic, further supporting this is the fact that she is blunt and snarky. Overall, the listed traits do not make the most sense together and how this is a strength isn't actually reflected anywhere. Intelligent in what, geology? Math? History of scavengers? Much like with the empath trait how this is a strength isn't reflected anywhere, we see she likes to blurt out facts but it's stated to embarrass her, suggesting it's more of a weakness or a personal flaw she has to overcome. The part about thicker skinned dragons is also unexplained so what it means or why it's important to note it is again something left up to guessing.)
Weaknesses: she is physically weak, trusts anyone who is willing to talk to her, doesn't quite understand the dangers that could be in her world
(Physically weak is poorly explained, like, is she not very strong in the sense that if something is heavy she can't lift it, is she frail due to some kind of medical condition? What does that mean? It's stated that she will trust anyone one who is willing to talk to her, yet it's also stated that dragons for some reason usually avoid her due to her hybridity/unusual circumstances of existence, alongside it mentioning she is introverted. Furthermore it's mentioned that her mom is her only friend. This overall suggests that this isn't much of a weakness because it will rarely occur. Finally regarding the last 'weakness' it's mentioned doesn't understand the dangers in the world, what dangers? Who knows- but it overall suggests that she is naive or oblivious, which directly contradicts her 'intelligence' strength.)
Likes: reading, cute animals, watching stars, exploring every inch of the jungle, spending time with her mother (and anyone who will take time to spend with her until her reserves of "I can be social right now" run out), fruits and certain meats (mainly goat, she won't eat anything she thinks is cute)
(How she came to like any of these things or why she even likes them is never explained.)
Dislikes: large crowds of dragons she doesn't know, being dirty, fish (much to Nightsong's confusion), feeling like she doesn't belong
•Same as above, why she dislikes these particular things and how she came to discover she doesn't like them is again anyone's guess.
Family: grandmother (Queen Glory), grandfather (Deathbringer), uncle (Rainstar), aunt (Mistbreather), cousins (numerous and currently unnamed), mother (Nightsong), animus creator (unnamed, child of one of the royal Seawings, though no one knew who it was beyond a she)
(The fact that Aurora is related to very important canon characters seems to mean very little to her character, like if you chopped Glory and Deathbringer out entirely and never mentioned them once, her character basically won't change at all. Also, you forgot Jambu, who would be a great uncle being Queen Glory's brother, and given this is 30 years later give or take I'm not sure if Grandeur would still be alive still but if she is she'd be a great great something grandma or if she's deceased, late great great something grandma. This also implies she should be royal, as she is biologically related to these characters.)
Friends: her mother is her best friend
Crush/mate: none yet, she's a bit young in my mind
Dragonets: none
Backstory: Aurora Borealis's mother, Nightsong, is a princess of the Rainwimgs and Nightwings. Though the oldest, Nightsong had no care to inherit the throne. Nor did she care to mate. Still, the warrior wanted a child. And not an adopted child, but one she learned to love as its egg grew inside her. With her aversion to mating, she sought out the only other option she could think of:
Animus magic. Hoping to the moons it would be possible.
Nightsong searched for and found the dragon, and beseeched the Seawing princess for what she wanted. The Seawing agreed, but only if the offspring was part Seawing itself.
(Nightsong's ability to track down an animus is alarmingly good, but also she legit somehow knew this dragon was animus, marched right up to her, demanded a child from this stranger she doesn't know at all who could do moons knows what to her, and the animus just went 'sure why not?' Also the Seawing declaring she wants the dragonet to be part seawing is another oddly specific detail for seemingly no specific reason: 3)
The royal hybrid did not care if her child had a third tribe's blood. So, the animus implanted the beginnings of a magically created egg in the soon to be mother's womb. She explained that the egg would develop as any would, the only unnatural thing being the equal splitting of three tribes, and that the dragonet would have her own personality. She would not shape the course of their life.
When Nightsong returned to her kingdom and told her family of what she'd done, there was an akward silence followed by Queen Glory's laugh and comment of Nightsong's unique solutions.
(Just gonna say that that Glory's response to Nightsong just leaving unannounced for a plan that she didn't talk over with her mother (for some reason?) for what was probably months (because I highly doubt that Nightsong would immediately bump into an animus within hours of leaving the Rainforest Kingdom) flat out abandoning any duties she has as a princess in the process would not earn a simple 'haha lol' from Queen Glory.)
Nightsong was twelve at the time, young by some standards, but mature beyond her years. The unconventional way of her egg coming into existence would cause scandal no matter her age, the princess was sure.
When Aurora hatched, Nightsong had indeed grown to love her daughter in a way only one who had carried the dragonet could. She saw Aurora as stunning in her uniqueness, though she might have been slightly curious to see her daughter had no venom, but could breathe underwater.
Aurora grew up with the support of her extensive family. Her unique appearance was nothing compared to Nightsong's abilities, Rainstar joked. The abilities Aury was immune to. (Oddly specific detail with seemingly no specific reason: 4)
But even with the support of her family, most dragonets her age, and much older, found her odd and difficult and preferred stay away from her.
Nightsong refused to let her daughter feel alone though, so she became her best friend, and started the journey of showing her heart just how incredible it could be to be one of a kind.
(For someone who is four years old there appears to be little going on in her life after her hatching besides just Nightsong hanging out with her.)
Others: Aurora wants to find the animus that created her one day. She'll wait until she's no longer a dragonet
(She wants to do this, but why? Any particular reason? No? Okay.)
————— 5/10
Aurora Borealis's overall character concept 'mom wants a child and is willing to go through great lengths to get the child and then raises them well' is a interesting and unique concept... but it seems with her that her concept makes up more of character then anything else. When I look at this character it's 'yeah this character was animus created cause her mom wanted a kid' and when I ask what the character themselves is like it seems like the answer is 'uh.. uh... she.. is an outcast, and uh, likes stuff like reading and is smart' and that's all there is to it. There's a lot that isn't explained, more then a little contradictory information, no actual strengths or weaknesses, and even a little bit of canon character breaking. Unfortunately overall I find the character is shallow with the most noticeable thing being her usual circumstances of existing, beyond that there is little else.
Originality and Creativity: 19/25
The overall concept of her existence is pretty unique, I've never seen someone make an oc like that until now. Though I've definitely seen ocs with similar appearances as the one you've described, most rain/night hybrids tend to be dark scales with brighter flashy colours mixed in with their dark scales. The name also wasn't very creative, as I've seen dozens of ocs with that name before.
Detail and effort: 15/25
The detail was certainly lacking, there was a lot of oddly specific details for seemingly no specific reason that were mentioned in a way that made them seem like they'd be important but ultimately were given no explanation as to why they exist or what it contributes to the character. A lot of stuff was also poorly explained, like the likes, dislikes, strengths, weaknesses, and so forth, leaving a lot of loose ends and holes in the character's bio.
Realism and interest: 19/25
I like how you did offer a reasoning behind Aurora's existence that is reasonable within the Wings of Fire world, but the way Nightsong seemed to immediately find an animus and then this super convenient animus who she knows little about just decides to listen to her request seems artificial. Alongside the fact that upon returning, Glory had a very unrealistic reaction in my opinion. Though, the backstory was overall interesting.... The rest of the bio felt kinda cliche and generic, nothing really stood out to me.
