Chapter 16
Hare
Three years Hare had served the Coyotes, climbing the ranks as quickly as she could to prove her loyalty. She trained day and night with Adobe, perfecting her skills as a guard and hitman.
Other called her a born assassin thanks to how silent and deadly she became. Over the corse of her being here, she buried her emotions deep within her, forcing herself to become devoid and obedient to the leader and his family.
From being a newbie, to becoming one of the higher classes, Hare cherished every action she had done. In her time of meetings, personal missions, and protecting the heirs, she had lost count of how many dragons who died at her claws and tail.
From being so shaken by killing to becoming almost and everyday thing, Hare knew no matter how much good she'd do in her life, it wouldn't make up for her sins.
Her father told her to always do her work with the best of her ability; and being a guard meant death to others. She was only doing her job, being the last line of defense for her Masters. She would protect them, even if it meant giving up her life for them.
The albinic had her eyes almost closed, walking along with Master Roadrunner and Master Aureus in the streets of Gila Town. Today, Spider told them to handle with a very important test. Today, one of her two Masters would prove who would take the throne after their father.
The streets seemed to know that too, dragons hiding in the shadows of the vacant and empty streets. Hare wished they could have come during the night so her eyes were more useful; but she knew her orders were more important then her.
Master Roadrunner held his head high, his shoulders back as he marched through the city, snarling as a small dragonet scampered out of his way to get to their mother.
Master Aureus was diffrent, head low as he walked along the streets, wings drooping as he drug his tail in the ground. It was a gesture of humiliation in the gang, having your tail barb being dragged, releasing the deadly venom from it, making it useless.
Hare didn't question, she wasn't spoken to, and didn't like the feeling of being slapped or bit. She just squinted, her wings and muscles tensed so they wouldn't twitch from sudden anxiety or fear subconsciously.
It normally hurt, having them tense for such long amount of time; but over the years, she grew use to the now dulling pain when she released, making them cramp from the sudden lost tension.
Dragons whispered as they pasted, Hare barely seeing them from the corner of her almost closed eyes. There was a SandWing with a bag on his chest, most likely an assassin. A lovely colored RainWing with splashes of rosey pinks and shiny purples, trails of black speckling on her wings when she saw her.
Master Roadrunner let out a growl as he saw a drunken MudWing stumble past him, Hare immediately watching him with trained eyes. Her claws flexed, ready to jump if he made any sudden move.
He continued on his stumbling ways, barely easing Hare's nerves. She noticed Master Aureus recurled his tail, coming to the conclusion he was out of venom.
What would want him to waste it? It was precious, it was on her main weapons in combat. To waste the venom, he was either in deep trouble with Lord Camel Spider; or completely trusted her with his life.
Hare found herself leaning towards the first one, as it felt like a week couldn't go by without Camel Spider nearly bitting his head off.
Eventually the three came to a stop, coming to the plaza. The unlucky dragons living around the plaza knew what was about to happen, seeing the two heirs. Parents quickly gathered their dragonets, hurrying inside, as elderly dragons stumbled in the air to get away or when away as quickly as their old bones would take them.
Hare looked up, seeing Adobe standing next to the fountain, a hood drawn over his head, which he took off after he spotted them.
"Good to see you three here at last. I've been waiting for a while now! How are you three?" he greeted, as thought he hadn't seen them early this morning.
Roadrunner groaned, letting out a small huff of annoyance. "Enough talk, Adobe, I want to show dad I'm the one taking the Pelt. Hurry up and tell us what we're gonna be doin'."
Adobe shook his head, his smile dropping. "Tsk, tsk, tsk. Roadrunner, you're always so... yourself. Today marks the day one of you will be having the throne of the Coyotes after your father and mother passes. As head Admin, best friend, and overseer of all of the gang, it is my job to come up with a way to test to see who is the next leader," Adobe began.
Hare watched him, his normal, happy tone ran in his voice. His eyes suddenly narrowed, his voice dropping as playfulness as his voice seemed to suddenly rival Spider's growling voice.
"You will be test in your strength. Camel Spider has made it obvious he wants the strongest to take the gang, which it why you will fight," he continued.
Aureus held his head lower, Roadrunner letting out an evil sounding growl. "A match too the death then?" the older asked. Adobe shook his head, phantom black eyes staring into Roadrunner's being.
"No, you will not fighting each other to the death, death can't be an option, or else is something happens their would be no heirs. Today, you will be facing me," he replied.
Both Roadrunner and Aureus seem to freeze, and Hare did her best to hide a chuckle. Adobe was a fierce opponent, she knew that from on talon experience. Back when she was only five, she barely took him down, but he was holding himself back.
Now at eight years of age, she still struggled to take him down during sparring. She couldn't stiffen the smile that crept to her face, already knowing the fight was going to end with someone getting a broken bone.
"But," Adobe started.
Hare snapped out of it, looking to her teacher as her features stiffened again.
"You will not be facing me this time. As head Admin, I can also assign someone else to take my spot. This time, I've always made my choice a long time ago."
Hare felt her breath hitch as her heart seem to skip a beat. 'Don't tell me he's gonna-'
"You will being fight Hare instead."
This moon blasted dust cloud. Hare bit her tongue, wanting to ask him if she had to fight the heirs. She noticed Aureus froze; but quickly spotted the heir picking at his claws.
"Hare? You're joking, right? She's gonna kill us!" Shouted Roadrunner, snarling a bit at the end. Adobe smiled an looked over to him.
"Then don't give her a chance too! You know the very basics of fighting, right? You should be able to last for more then at least a minute."
Hare heard a hum of thought before it was followed by a sigh. "Fine! I'll go first then," grumbled the older heir, stomping his way to the other side of the fountain.
Hare saw Aureus and Adobe walk out of the way, giving her time to recollection herself. She barely lowered her front half down, forearms slightly speak out to get ready for any attack to be deflected or given.
Her wings were ready to shoot out, and her tail was to her side, like a trusty dagger an assassin had on them. Roadrunner tried to copy her stance; but her red eyes saw the glimpse of how awkward and stiff he stood.
This was going to as easy as stealing sweets from a hatchling.
~~~
Stealing a sweet from a hatchling was an understatement. It was like stealing a jewel from an egg.
Hare gazed at the badly wounded Roadrunner under her, her sitting on top like a prideful vulture showing off what they just found.
Adobe couldn't help the need to laugh, seeing the albinic's easy victory. He shook his head as he gasped for breath.
"I don't even think that was a minute! Hare, no need to have kill the poor dragon's spirit. You could have gone easy on him at least!" Adobe stated, coming over to them.
Hare blinked. "But I was going easy, wasn't I?" she asked, stepping off of the other. Roadrunner moaned in pain, looking up at her with a slightly broken look in his eyes.
She felt a little bad, knowing the want to show how strong you were to someone who you knew could easily take do you down. She remembered she was scared of fighting Adobe before swallowing it and facing off with him.
Adobe helped him up, and was able to help him stumble to the sidelines as Aureus went to where Roadrunner once stood. The two got into the same stance, Hare's keen blood red eyes seeing how their was a flash of reluctance in his. She bowed her head a bit lower, waiting for Adobe's words.
"Ready, set, duel!"
