Chapter 15

Aureus

Aureus cautiously trekked along on the hallways, candles lit along the wall to light the hall. He had planned on going out again, to just get out and get some fresh air and spread his wings.

His head a down, his claws tapping with each step being the only sound. It was quiet, like even the building know how nervous he was. After Hare get her branding done, he noticed how differently she sudden starting acting.

Granted, he didn't know much of her before hand; but it seemed different from her few days there. He grew worried for her, blaming himself for being part of it.

He should have showed her the way out, to let her out and have a chance to escape. He flinched, stopping momentarily.

"I was being selfish. I didn't want her to leave, I wanted her here with me."

Aureus cursed at himself. He shouldn't have done that, he should have left her go. He shook his head, brushing the thought off before making his way outside.

Two moons were bright and shinning tonight, the third one hidden. He felt the cold night air brush his scales as he began to walk away from the hideout.

He had to get away. He had to leave, find Ivory, and leave this accursed place for good. If he could just leave, things would be so much better. He wouldn't have to hear Spider and Eve argue, or have Roadrunner berate him, or be forced to kill when he gets older.

Subconsciously, his pace got quicker.

Questioning looks were thrown at him, eyes gazing at his wings. What was the prince of the Coyotes doing here?

A RainWing dragoness rose a brow as he didn't even spar her a look. A NightWing that smelt weird watched him as his steps go a bit quicker.

"I have to leave. I have to leave and find Ivory, she'll know what to do."

Thoughts of the IceWing made him smile. She was his only friend, the only one who would hear him, even if she was a deaf. She made life so much easier, and if she didn't know what to do, he had her again.

His only friend and Hare; together they all could escape, and then live a normal life. Sure, it sounded weird to everyone; but to him is made sense. Him and Hare would get married, Ivory would be the godmother of their dragonet, then once Spider died, they could go back.

He would challenge his brother for the Pelt (the throne the leaders sat on), kill him, and with them by his side, he could change things for the better. It was perfect!

At this point, the heir was running, darting his way out of the slums. He would head to the IceWing Kingdom, fly around the Great Ice Cliff, go find her, and out his plan into action.

Bystanders looked on with confusion, before quickly disappearing as a large dragon appeared.

Aureus didn't notice, the future blinding him. They could all dissappear, live a happy life with no fear of being killed by Spider. Those he loved would be safe!

"Aureus."

A

ureus came to a halt, obedience making him stop at his name. He was confused, looking around, before looking back. His blood ran ice cold, his breathing stopped as he stared into dark green.

Spider stood left then a dragon away, his large build towering over him. Aureus felt his body lock up, ears back, eyes wide. Spider's cold gaze stared down at him.

"Why are you out?" Spider asked. Aureus felt his legs suddenly buckle, his front half going down as his wings opened into a bowing position.

"Dad, I-"

"Go home."

He looked up, seeing a shine in his father's eyes he thought looked strange. It was dull, yet shone against his dark irises.

"We will talk during the meeting."

Aureus just looked up, his hindquarters bunch together, his wings drawing in as his tail gathered to his side. He saw the glint in his father's eyes flicker again, before he turned around, and opened his large wings. He rose his head, his loud booming voice echoing in the now silent streets.

"Every dragon who hears my voice, if you see this dragonet out on the streets not accompanied by a guard, he is to be taken down and given to me. You will rewarded by me, Camel Spider of the Coyotes."

Aureus felt his heart sink as he father gazed back at him. In a hushed tone, he heard Spider mutter, "Let's go."

The small SandWing gulped nervously, getting to his talons. He looked around, seeing eye peer out of the shadows at him as he followed him father.

Camel Spider didn't utter a word, walking along the hard cobblestone street. The gang leader was large and imposing, even with his missing hind leg.

He always wondered how his father lost it when he was little, before learning it was when he fought his grandfather. Daze had set up a trap, and Spider walked into it, literally and figuratively.

The silent walk home came to and end as Aureus found himself before his father in the Meeting Room. The golden statues greeted him with their cold, intimidating gaze, cutting through his soul it felt like.

He looked up at Spider, his father gazing down at him, though his gaze wasn't as string as it normally was.

"This will only be between us, Aureus. I want to know how long you've been sneaking out."
