Prolouge
An IceWing whose scales shimmered with hues of ice-blue and white tread stealthily over the frost-covered slopes near the rendezvous point. Her gaze fixed intently on the horizon, she soon spotted a tiny speck in the sky, and her eyes gleamed like molten gold as a majestic SkyWing descended in a swift dive, alighting upon the strewn pebbles with grace.
"mlove," the dragon whispered, a purr of contentment bubbling in her throat as she nuzzled her partner, and soon they retreated into a cavern with lofty ceilings from which icicles hung like glittering spears.
They coiled around a nest wrought from snow-frost and withered leaves, and it was there a tawny egg was tenderly placed, the promise of new life cradled within.
"This is beautiful, she's beautiful," the SkyWing murmured, his scars shifting subtly as he twisted to embrace his daughter and mate close to his chest.
The IceWing spun gracefully, tracing a line across her mate's chest, a soft coo sounding in her throat before succumbing to the gentle embrace of slumber.
After a moment's rest, the IceWing awoke with a start, a chill enveloping her that was colder than any she had felt before. A crease of concern furrowed her brow as she flung a wing protectively over the tawny egg, holding it close to warm it. That's when her eyes caught sight of a frozen rose lying on the smooth floor of the cave, and she couldn't help but smile, her tail curling tenderly around the unexpected gift, carefully navigating her spines to draw it close.
Nestled amid her sharp claws, she rolled the icy bloom over to reveal a small note attached to its stem:
"I apologize, my dear Frostwing, but I had to leave for my duty. You know how irate Queen Phoenix gets if I am tardy. But promise, I shall return to our cavern before midnight. - Your devoted, Blaze."
Frostwing sighed deeply and flicked her tail, tucking the rose and note away, and curled once more around her precious egg. She understood that her beloved couldn't always be nearby, but now that they were expecting – she had hoped he might take paternity leave as her friends had when they welcomed their hatchlings.
Click, click echoed against the cliff face just outside the cavern, drawing Frostwing swiftly to attention, a low growl humming in her throat. However, it wasn't an intruder but a familiar ice-mirrored figure who glided in, her powdery blue wings folding gracefully behind her as she met Frostwing's watchful gaze. "Sister," she rumbled, settling down with her spiky tail curled carefully over her claws. Frostwing sighed, the tension ebbing from her shoulders.
"What do you want, Snowfall?" Frostwing asked, sitting upright, her tail protectively draping over her egg.
Snowfall spoke with a solemn timbre, "I wish to speak with you about Blaze. You know we cannot fully trust the SkyWings; they have a troubled history with their queens. And though Phoenix has been just, her sister's legacy lingers."
She glanced away momentarily before continuing, "Hailstorm brings news from the front. Scarlet is vying for power once again—she may unseat Phoenix. Your mate will be bound by his loyalties and may not be able to remain with you. You must brace yourself to raise your little one alone."
The words hung heavy in the chilled air as Frostwing processed the grave implication. Her heart clenched, not only for her beloved Blaze but also for the uncertain future of her hatchling within its shell.
"I do not believe Scarlet will manage to seize power from Phoenix. Phoenix is strong enough to withstand her sister," Frostwing asserted, flicking her tail whose sharp, serrated claws clicked against the stone floor. Snowfall hummed thoughtfully, "If you think so, we shall have to wait and see if it proves true."
Then, with the same grace as she had entered, Snowfall rose and swept out of the cavern, leaving Frostwing to the solitude of her thoughts once more. The sound of wingbeats faded into the crisp air, and Frostwing was alone again. She sighed, settling onto her belly, her mind filled with uncertainty. What would become of her cherished daughter and the family she hoped to have?
In the silence of the cavern, cradling the egg against the warmth of her underbelly, Frostwing pondered the future. Though the challenges were daunting, she knew the strength that flowed through the veins of IceWings. With or without her mate at her side, she would protect and rear her hatchling with the fiercest devotion—a true testament to the relentless spirit of her tribe.

At the grand assembly in the Sky Kingdom, Blaze stood before Phoenix and her court with a bearing of unwavering loyalty. "Commander, you and Captain King are to scout the front lines and ensure that Scarlet does not cross the mountain peak into our domain," commanded Phoenix. Her tail punctuated each word with authority as she added, "Also, Blaze, see to it that Queen Glory is informed. In this foolish war, I would rather have silent assassins on our side."
Phoenix's fiery gaze was as searing as the flames she was named for, leaving no room for doubt or debate. Blaze nodded solemnly and bowed, "As you wish, my queen," he responded, the deep thrum of respect resonating in his voice.
With that, they all launched themselves into the sky, wings unfurling with the grace and power that only SkyWings possessed. They swooped down from the palace perched upon the cliffs and flew over the battlegrounds that had become a makeshift infirmary. Many dragons looked up, their eyes filled with a mixture of hope and weariness as Blaze and his companions passed overhead, but Blaze paid them no heed. He flew wing to wing with Captain King, both of them set on their course toward the lush expanse of the nearby rainforest.
Together, they cut through the sky, their mission clear and their resolve unbreakable. Blaze held onto the silent promise to return to Frostwing and their egg, fighting for a future where they all could live without the shadow of war hanging over their heads.
As they distanced themselves from the palace, Captain King glanced over at Blaze, his voice carrying a stern edge, "I struggle with the notion that you must be at the front rather than with your mate."
Blaze peered back at him with unflinching eyes, "It is fine, Captain. I am honored to serve my kingdom, regardless of the personal cost," he said, deftly dipping under King's wing and spiraling downwards toward the verdant rainforest canopy below.
Their descent was intercepted as a wing of RainWings burst forth from the foliage, Queen Glory leading them with a regal grace that warranted immediate respect. She dipped her head to the formidable SkyWings, her scales shimmering with green and red hues. "Gentlemen, welcome," Glory greeted, flicking her vibrant tail back towards the woods.
"Shall we?" asked King with a solemn nod, and together, they plunged toward the forest, weaving through the maze of branches and leaves. Soon, they alighted upon a dwelling crafted from sturdy, broad leaves — a display of the RainWings' seamless integration with the wilds around them.
Queen Glory turned to face the visitors, just as a dark dragon ascended from a lower platform, draping a wing around her in a protective embrace. "Ah, King Deathbringer," rumbled Captain King, inclining his head in a respectful bow.
The king of the RainWings chuckled softly, "Ease, King, no need for such formalities in our company. We serve the same cause; I seek no extra honor." He sat down close to Glory, nuzzling her affectionately.
"Now I presume you're here to discuss whether we shall strike down Scarlet at first sight or if she dares to enter our territory?" he questioned, and Blaze nodded in affirmation, "If it wouldn't be too much trouble for you all."
Glory hummed thoughtfully, her mood somber. "I take no pleasure in killing, but Scarlet is no ordinary dragon deserving of mercy. My dragons will do their utmost. Pyrrhia must be safeguarded for the upcoming generation."
As she spoke, her tail idly coiled around the platform, seemingly beckoning a response. Suddenly, a young dragon full of sweetness leaped up, unfurling his star-speckled wings. As sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, playing upon his scales, he glimmered like a tranquil clear sky at dawn.
"Ah, Peacemaker," murmured Blaze, recognizing the cheerful bundle of joy from a few years prior — the day after the great Darkstalker's disappearance.
"Uncle Blaze," the young RainWing uttered, a note of adoration in his voice. "You have four prongs now, maybe tall like dad if mom Hope did her job right." The young dragon's voice was full of wonder, and for a moment, Blaze's heart swelled with affection for the little one as Peacemaker bounded back to his mother's side after their brief encounter.
With the dragonet's departure, the adults could finally turn their attention back to the grave matters at hand. Amidst the discussion, Blaze's thoughts were tumultuous. His deepest hope was that the conflicts, the skirmishes that racked their lands, would soon cease and that Phoenix would remain the reigning queen of the Sky Kingdom — a beacon of resolve against Scarlet's dark aspirations.
But outcomes in the world of dragons were as unpredictable as the shifting skies. Only time would reveal the fate of Pyrrhia; only time would tell if the battles fought by the likes of Blaze, Glory, and the others would lead to a lasting peace or merely serve as the prelude to further strife.
For now, he clung to the image of his beloved Frostwing and their egg, envisioning a future where his hatchling could soar on serene wings rather than be tempered in the fires of war. That hope alone gave him the strength to face the uncertainty of the days ahead.
