Chapter 9: A Mysterious Vision (I couldn't think of anything better)

Pride walked down the stone halls, his own talons feeling large and clumsy.  The worried thoughts that were parading through his head (Are Firefly and Anaconda okay? What will dragons think of my mind reading?) blocked out the thoughts and emotions of other dragons.  He turned right into his cave, and to his surprise someone was already in there, one of his clawmates, he guessed.  The scarred, skinny SkyWing on the stone ledge stirred in his sleep, and before he knew it, Pride was sucked into the disturbed, fitful nightmares of the sleeping SkyWing.  A huge, muscular SkyWing beat a small, shivering dragonet crouched in front of her.  He had tears streaming down his cheeks, and gasped, "Ma, please," The SkyWing slashed at him, leaving bleeding claw marks on his cheek.  The little SkyWing tried again, "Ma, don't."  Then, the big dragon opened her mouth and roared flames all around him, setting the little hut they were in on fire.  However, before the door could burn down, the mother rushed out the door and locked it, leaving her little one to burn.  Fire climbed up the dragonet's wings, and he screamed. Finally, Pride managed to pry his mind out of the nightmare. Of course, they had learned how to do that at the mind reading/prophecy school in the NightWing village, but Pride was never really that good at that, or any type of schoolwork for that matter. He looked at the shaking, writhing dragonet and thought, I have to wake this poor dragon up. Pride slowly approached the SkyWing, and carefully nudged his shoulder with his talon. His clawmate whimpered, and Pride tried again, but this time a little harder, and the SkyWing jolted awake. The dragonet looked at him, and his eyes widened. Pride said desperately, "Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to frighten you, except, um, I guess I'm not really sorry, because of, um, your dream, and I got worried and I didn't know what to do so I just thought I should wake you up, so, um..." Pride trailed off. "How did you know about...that?" his clawmate whispered, his eyes still as wide as the moons. Pride winced. This was always the tricky part. "I, um, I happen to be able to read minds? And make prophecies?" The SkyWing stared at him, open-mouthed. Pride looked down and shuffled his feet. "I usually stay out of everyone's minds though, because, you know, it's probably what they want. What's your name?" His clawmate blinked, probably startled by the sudden change of subject. "T-Tornado," he managed to whisper.  Pride said, truthfully, "Oh, nice name.  My name is Pride." He decided not to mention the fact that he was the son of Queen Glory.  Just as he was about to ask Tornado if he had any sisters or brothers, a blue-green SeaWing walked into the cave.  He grinned and said "Hello."  "Hi, I'm Pride, and this is Tornado," Pride responded, "Are you our clawmate?" As soon as he had said that, a vision suddenly flooded into his mind, clear as crystals.  A skinny but muscular NightWing with a scowl loomed over the SeaWing, who defiantly glared back at her.  Just as the vision was about to vanish, another vision popped into his head.  A waterfall cascaded down a mountain, crashing into a sparkling lake.  On a large, flat boulder covered with spray from the waterfall, the same SeaWing, although bigger and older, was tackling with three dragonets who all looked somewhat like him.  And behind him, a familiar, light green dragon was rolling her eyes, yet smiling all the same.  Pride's head reeled.  Was that... Anaconda?  Before he could even register what he was seeing, the vision disappeared from his mind.  Pride blinked a few times, trying to clear his blurry sight.  "Whoa," the SeaWing said, "Are you all right?  You looked like you blanked out there for a second."  Pride answered, "Yes, yes, of course.  It was nothing.  I just–I..." he trailed off.  "Three moons," Tornado whispered, "Was that–did you have a–a vision of the future?" The SeaWing furrowed his eyebrows and said "What do mean, vision of the future?" "I–I um..." Pride stammered.  "Ohhh," The SeaWing's expression cleared as Pride could feel the understanding washing over his brain.  "You can see the future–NightWing powers.  Can you read minds too?"  "Um, yes," Pride mumbled, "you must be Hurricane." Pride said, changing the subject again.  Hurricane opened and closed his mouth and said, "Yes, I'm Hurricane.  Although, you don't look like a NightWing.  Wait, you wouldn't happen to be related to Queen Glory, would you?"  Pride said, "Yup.  I mean," Pride cleared his throat, "Why yes, I most certainly am related to Queen Glory.  In fact, I am her son."  Pride had a feeling he wasn't doing a very good job of acting like a royal prince.  Hurricane made a face that showed that he did not know whether to be amused or surprised.  Finally, he grinned and said in a formal voice, "Well, it is an honor to make your acquaintance, Your Royal Highness.  I am quite sure all three of us will become very good friends."  Pride laughed.  Tornado said, "I didn't know you were a prince."  Pride said, "It's not usually the first thing I tell other dragons."  "Yeah," Hurricane agreed, "Can you imagine him saying to everyone 'Hello, I am the son of Queen Glory, so you'd better make sure you respect me' to everyone?  How bigheaded would that sound?" Hurricane joked.  Pride laughed again.  Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Tornado smiling at both of them.  Pride liked the feeling of making other dragons smile, especially one that could use some cheering up.  All of a sudden, an orange dragon with pretty, warm, amber eyes poked her head into the cave and saw that there were three dragons in there.  She came into the cave and said, "Sorry.  I was just checking to make sure Tornado was here and okay.  I didn't mean to intrude.  My name is Cinder, by the way." Pride couldn't help but notice that Cinder, the SkyWing, was very pretty.  Before Hurricane or Tornado could respond, Pride jumped in, "No, no, you're not intruding into us, I mean," He coughed in embarrassment, "Into our conversation, which we weren't even having in the first place because you didn't intrude at all. I mean, yes, hello, very good, I mean nice, to meet you, my name is Pride, and this is Hurricane."  He said all of this in two very rushed sentences.  Pride could hear Hurricane's mind going, Smooth, Pride. Real smooth.  Cinder gave Pride an amused look and smiled at him.  She then said, "Well, very nice to meet you guys, Pride and Hurricane."  She turned to Tornado, who was relievedly smiling at her.  "Are you okay, Tornado?  Cinder asked in a soothing voice, "Did you have a nightmare again?"  Tornado looked at the floor and nodded.  Cinder gave him a sympathetic look and turned back to Pride and Hurricane.  In answer to their questioning looks, she said, "I can tell you about that later, Tornado doesn't really like to talk about it.  Anyways, I should be going now.  My sister is waiting for me." Cinder gave Pride one last smile and swept out the entrance of the cave.  "Well that was strange," Hurricane said, casting a confused glance at the doorway.  "But someone had moony-eyes toward the pretty new dragon, didn't they?"  Hurricane said in sly voice, giving a sideways mysterious smirk toward Pride.  "What?" Pride protested loudly, flapping his wings, "Of course not! I mean, yes, she was pretty, but I wasn't giving her moony-eyes!"  Hurricane and Tornado burst out laughing, and after a few seconds of giving them a serious/mad/startled face, Pride broke and joined in the laughter too.  And in that moment of happiness and fun, Pride almost forgot to worry about Hurricane's ominous prophecy, or Anaconda and the mystery dragonets.  Yes, Pride thought, I really am going to enjoy school.
