Chapter 5: The strangest birthday
Nyxon and Luna fell asleep. He drifted away into a dream. Nyxon was happy here, diving into the corners of his mind for moments that made him happy. He happened to stumble on to when he was particularly happy. It was him outside with Luna as a child. The bond they shared was strong. They just couldn't get away from each other. Nyxon was on a grass hill next to Luna, holding hands as they stared into the clouds. Luna was humming again. She loved humming; so did the butterfly on her nose. Nyxon got an idea while staring into the clouds. He looked over to Luna, "Hmmmmm. Hey Luna? What do you wanna do when you're older?" Luna looked at Nyxon in curiosity. The butterfly on her nose flew away as she stopped her beautiful tune. "I... don't know, really," replied Luna. Her voice was shaky.
"What? Really?"
Luna laughs to herself. "Of course not! I still am a Princess Nyxon. Although seeing how you want to do the things you do... makes me wish I did too."
Nyxon raised an eyebrow. Still confused, "You wanna make a lot of friends?"
"Well, yes? But there's so much to learn out there in this world. I'd reckon some people didn't even know we had three moons."
Nyxon raised a confusing eyebrow at the newfound info, "We do?" asked Nyxon.
"Yes! See? That's what I mean. And I bet there's so much more to learn out there, too! And I wanna see it all!" Luna stood excitedly, crawling on all fours to grab Nyxon's hand. She couldn't stop hyperventilating from the excitement she was feeling from thinking. "Nyxon! I want to go on adventures with you! So when you make friends along the way, I can gather knowledge on the world through books!"
"Luna..." Nyxon says softly. "Luna, that's awesome! We can be like partners on the seas! O-Or maybe– no, I have an idea!"
"Nyxon? What do you mean?" asked Luna.
"Luna.... Lets.... Let's get married!" "So we can go on adventures together when we're older!"
Luna's hands start to sweat. She takes immediate notice by pulling her hands, leaving Nyxon in confusion. She begins to stare at him as he sits on the grass plains, staring into his eyes while he stares into hers with his hands out, shaking in fear from whatever response she could give out. Luna stood up as she pulled along Nyxon. His hands were weak, and his legs felt like they would give out the wrong answer from Luna.
"Y-Yeah!" she says with tears in her eyes. Luna just couldn't stop smiling. "Let's get married one day, Nyxon!"
Nyxon's eyes start to water. His tears began to fall on the top of Luna's hands. Luna notices the joy in Nyxon's eyes and takes it upon herself to wipe them away with her hand. Nyxon surprises her by lifting her, making Luna laugh hysterically. Nyxon had begun to spin her around while she was in his arms, laughing and smiling at the foreseeable future the two had in store for them.
Nyxon's eyes glistened, a distinct color from what he originally had. From brown to blue in an instant, they had gone for a moment, and Luna had taken notice. "Huh? His eyes just– no, I'm just being dramatic," she said to herself as she continued laughing in Nyxon's arms.
Luna had woken up. She was still in the library with Nyxon. She started to stare at him as she leaned in closer and went to sleep again.
The sun peered onto the kingdom. Its light shined onto the buildings, houses, and plants. The plants rose, the fish jumped in the river, and the King of Esmus had also woken up. He was up bright and early, yelling in the castle halls as multiple members ran across the castle quickly.
"You!" Magnus screamed from behind the woman.
"Y-Yes?"
"Why is this castle not finished like I said last night?"
"I-I don't know!"
"I know why! It's cause my Son isn't awake!" The King says as he walks away to climb the stairs again. "You!" The king shouts. "Where is Manda?"
"S-Shes upstairs waking up Sir Nyxon!"
The King stomps his feet up the stairs as he passes by the Elf on the ladder, painting a sign.
The King finally climbs the treacherous steps as he opens Nyxon's door to find the Manda standing with her hand over her mouth. She looked shocked, almost as if she saw a vampire fly in and fly back out. "N-N-Nyxon-" she says as she sees the King approaching her.
"Where is he? Manda! Tell me, where is he?" The king says as he begins to place his hands on Manda's shoulders and shake her.
"H-He's gone!"
"WHAT!" The king says as he rushes to the bed.
Magnus pulls off the sheets violently and throws them against the wall, leaving a dent in their spot. He looked at the space lying on the bed as he panicked. He felt sick. He thought he could just scream– he looked like he was about to. But he didn't (surprisingly.) Magnus took a deep breath to calm himself down. Magnus looked at Manda with his happiest face, "It's fine. He's just being a kid again." muttered Magnus.
Nyxon was fast asleep at the library. Luna had also taken comfort in the pillow she was lying on (that being Nyxon.) Nyxon had a dream, still taking comfort in his slumber. His dream was slowly interrupted— a woman, the same woman he saw in his blade the other day, was in his dream. His scar started to hurt. He wanted to scratch at it– but he couldn't. His hands wouldn't move. He saw a woman with silver hair; her eyes looked as gray as gravel. But that was all. Nyxon woke up, and without a second thought, he scratched himself; "That's better,"
Nyxon jerked his head in various spaces as he noticed he was still in the library. He turned his head outside as loud music and shouting could be heard.
Luna groaned as she opened her eyes to Nyxon. She must have still been tired. "Hm? Oh, morning Nyxon–" Luna said before yawning, "Did you sleep well?"
"I'm fine. Did you?"
Luna pushes herself off of Nyxon as she stretches and yawns. "Y-Yeah, I did." She stretched, almost similar to a cat. It made Nyxon laugh before Luna frowned, "Oh man, sorry, Nyxon. I-I forgot to teach you how to read last night. I-I'm sorry."
"Hey, it's fine. Reading isn't all that important for me right now," Nyxon says as he pulls Luna in for a hug. She yawns, "When we get married, you can teach me everything you want," said Nyxon. Luna started to hum again if only the birds outside could hear her. Nyxon took a deep breath, "And read all the books you wanna read, and travel all the lands across the world." Luna's eyes widened, "Books!" Luna shouted excitedly. "I LOVE READING BOOKS, Nyxon!" Luna gives another big hug to Nyxon. He couldn't be any happier than he was right now.
Luna was happy. Nyxon couldn't think she was anything but that while hugging him. Luna looked at the room behind her as she noticed the calendar. It reads, 'June 27.' Luna gasped; she barely could contain it, so Nyxon heard it as quickly as it happened. Luna whispered, "It's your birthday–" said Luna. She promptly kissed Nyxon, surprising him again. It was almost relentless, but she stopped again to hum Nyxon a tune just for him. It was beautiful.
Nyxon glared at the book in front of him. He was confused; the book didn't look like any sword techniques he was supposed to be looking at; instead, it was a picture of a woman. "Hey, Luna," said Nyxon. "I thought we were looking at sword techniques?"
"We were?" Luna said confusingly. She picked up the book and glared at the woman on the page. She had gray skin and white silver hair, almost something from a fantasy book. "Weird, this isn't the book at all, but the God of Fate, Amaris,"
Nyxon was confused. "Who?"
"Amaris, she's the one who dictates what happens in this world. People used to worship her, begging on their knees to one day change their future and write a happy ending for them–" Luna turned the page, revealing Amaris holding her hand above a man's face. "Legends say she had an item called the 'Book of Fate' where she could write a sentence down and grant a wish that could change history or even write new versions down."
"She had people begging to change their future, whether from a curse or an inevitable death. Of course, Amaris had a heart of gold and sometimes even granted those wishes. However, she could be cruel whenever her sisters interfered with her writing, and–" Luan flipped the book over, trying to find the next page.
"And?"
"And– that's it?" Luna shut the book. "That's everything– look!" Luna showed the book to Nyxon, where torn pages seemed to stick out. "The pages were ripped out! Someone vandalized the book!"
Luna slammed the book together, muttering about how annoying the pages being gone had been to her. Nyxon noticed something fall from the book: a yellow note with fancy writing on it. Nyxon gave the note to Luna for her to read out loud.
Don't be afraid. Time is ticking, and your fates are about to align.
Good luck, Nyxy, and Luna
"Nyxy?" Luna said confusingly. "doesn't Manda always call you that?"
"Yeah, but– I'm so confused– it can't be her," Nyxon was confused. "Why would my own sister sneak into a library at night and leave this here?"
"Whatever it is, I'll get to the bottom of it," replied Luna.
Nyxon was filled with questions, as usual. Who was Amaris? Why are there notes ripped from this book about her? And who left this note? A part of Nyxon wanted to believe it was Manda, but everything seemed too creepy for him to suspect her. Maybe it was Brinks, but the handwriting was too neat for his large hands to write it with. Luna wanted to know who it was, too. She couldn't stand holding the book closely with its torn pages.
Nyxon and Luna walked outside to the bright kingdom of Esmus. Luna tried summoning a falcon for her and Nyxon to ride on, but she started sweating and panting for air.
"Hey, you should relax with the Aura use," said Nyxon. "Here, I can just fly us to your place," he said as he got up and offered his hand to Luna.
"O-Oh," Luna said as she wiped her forehead again. "Thank you. I guess I can't focus as much because of the book,"
The falcon slowly fades away as Nyxon hovers over the air with his wings. Luna takes comfort in the hug Nyxon has her in as she lets out a sigh of relief as Nyxon begins to soar through the environment. It was windy, too windy; in fact, it had started to make Nyxon change formation in the air.
Nyxon had finally managed to fly into the town of prophets. What should have taken Nyxon minutes took him only a few seconds. Finally coming in contact with the town, he stepped down gently to let Luna off as she jumped toward the ground. They began running desperately towards the castle that had occupied the town of prophets. Luna quickly addressed herself that she was in a rush as crowds cleared a lane for them to run past quickly. They jumped through the flight of stairs leading into the castle; the halls where the stairs had met had been filled with books on the sides where the railings had met. Various titles had been marked with red stamps, not like Nyxon could read them anyway at the time. He was in a vital rush, after all. They finally approached the bathhouse room as the two stared at each other, a sense of relief washing over them.
Luna quickly left the room. She was going to join in later when she got the chance. Nyxon started to take off his armor and equipment as he was getting ready to enter the pool of water. Nyxon started thinking to himself again. Just what was behind that door? And who is the woman he keeps envisioning? Every time he thought about it, his head would start to hurt, and his scar would start to burn. It felt like he was sitting in a pool of lava each time he thought about the mystery of what was behind the door. He stopped soon— it was time for a bath. Luna was back.
The bath felt nice. Nyxon was clean now, and the smell of toads was also gone. Nyxon and Luna spent most of their time splashing around and playing in the pool like they did in the river. It was fun; Nyxon had fun. Luna got out of the pool to dry herself off. She wrapped her towel around her body and hair as Nyxon did. Luna turned to see Nyxon, his back completely exposed to her. Nyxon felt he was being looked at. He couldn't help but feel like he could do something funny. Nyxon turned around, "Princess? Is something wrong?"
Luna seemed to keep staring into Nyxon's eyes before breaking out and responding, "Hm? Oh, sorry, I-I mean, how could I not get lost in your eyes."
"My P-Princess! I'm flattered, but please, aren't you engaged?"
Luna gasped dramatically. "I have never heard such an outlandish accusation before! How dare you!"
Luna turns her back towards Nyxon with her arms crossed. Her hair ended up hitting Nyxon swiftly as she turned around. Nyxon eventually snuck up behind her for a hug, surprising her as she shouted again in excitement and joy from Nyxon's warm embrace.
Slowly, they were running out of time. Needing to hurry back towards the kingdom had become a priority for Nyxon as Luna had started to reread the time. The celebration would begin soon, and it was only a matter of time before Nyxon was late. Luna quickly made her way downstairs, along with Nyxon by her side. As she slammed through the door out to the castle, her ears managed to pick up on a voice.
"Luna? Just where do you think you're going?" A voice whispered from behind her.
She turned around in sudden shock, but it later turned into confusion. "D-Dad?" She said in a surprising tone.
"Luna!"
"Dad!"
Nyxon raises his hand slightly in the air. "Nyxon?"
Cleo rolled his eyes, "Yes, I know it's you, Nyxon," Cleo shared an expression towards Luna. "Luna?"
"Dad– oh right!" Luna reached into her bag, pulling the book from her brown bag, "Look! Someone vandalized this book!"
If it weren't for the bright sun, Nyxon wouldn't have noticed Cleo's eyes bulging from his head. He looked terrified, almost as if he had seen a ghost. Cleo tried to talk, but his mouth clamped shut like a wooden door. "Dad?" whispered Luna; she looked just as terrified as Cleo.
Cleo shook his head, "Oh– sorry! I thought I saw Amaris spying on me. She can be quite strange,"
"You can talk to Gods?" Nyxon asked confusingly.
"Well, of course. As an Angel of time, it is my job to keep this part of the kingdom safe from any disturbances in time," Nyxon and Luna could hear how high and mighty Cleo sounded. "Luna is coming a long way to becoming one, too!"
"Ah, Dad–" Luna sounded embarrassed; her ears were going red. "I came to you because the book pages at the end were missing," Luna flipped to the torn pages.
Cleo nearly fainted. "Oh my, Go– whoops! Almost let that one slip out," Cleo took the book carefully from Luna. "This is so strange... I'll have this book back to normal in no time," Cleo placed his hand over the book, it started to hover in the air with golden sparkles.
"What's he doing?" asked Nyxon.
"This– is the power of an angel of time. I have been blessed with the ability to turn back time in certain areas and items. My Wife is the same way, although she can fast-forward things." Cleo kept spinning the book around, but with each second passed, it only seemed to lose itself in the orb. First, the color started to soak away, and then the pages. Cleo held on to a single page of the book, where a still image of Amaris stood. "This is so strange. The pages of the book should have come to normal."
"Is something wrong–"
"No," Cleo said firmly. He sounded serious, and it was a shock to Nyxon and Luna. "I need to take this somewhere else– Luna, you stay here for a moment."
Cleo walked away into the castle, leaving Luna and Nyxon in shock. "What a weird book... I've never seen Dad act that way before. Maybe you should go to the castle without me,"
"What?" said Nyxon. He wasn't paying attention. He was still focused on the book. "I don't wanna leave you–"
Luna grabbed Nyxon's face, "I'll be fine. If anything happens, I'll tell you, I promise," Luna kissed Nyxon. It took Nyxon by surprise. "It is your birthday, right?"
