Chapter 3

Damn my luck. "Yes indeed, Rosalinda" As I was still shaking with pain Chaol, the king came closer to me. With each step he took, the library's atmosphere seemed to change and became more suffocating. Dain help me. Why can't I move, what is this pain for? "Maybe because you ripped a page from the library Rosalinda? Did you consider this?" How could I know I wasn't supposed to do that?!

My shaking stopped with a loud thud that came from Chaol's hand. I looked up to him and realized that he used his power on me. Though I didn't really know what he did to me.

"So who are you now, little thief?" I spun all the answers I could give him to get out of this in my head but then I remembered that I was pretending to be Eleni, Jaiblynn's sister and king's daughter.

"What do you mean 'who are you'? Of course I am your daughter, dad." I replied.

Chaol started to laugh loudly and I realized I made a mistake.

"Did you think some facetailor work would fool me? I knew from the minute you stepped inside the dining room that you were not my daughter." Well, that's not good.

I tried to sit up and hide the book behind me while thinking about an answer to give but he noticed what I was doing and snatched the book from the floor before I could reach it.

"Let me see what we have here that was so important that you even tried to steal it." he mumbled while looking at the book. When he realized what that book was about he turned back to smiling.

"Are you a powerless faerie trying to do spells from a book? Don't you know that if you don't have magic you can't do the spells either?" Well, that I didn't know. As I was about to answer him the doors to the library opened once more and this time Jaiblynn came in.

"Oh hi dad, hi Eleni. What are you guys doing here, the fest is about to start everyone is waiting for the offer" he said, looking genuinely surprised to see me here. I'll give him that, how could he foresee that his human capture is exploring their library.

"Hi son, though you are wrong about Eleni because this is definitely not Eleni but someone pretending to be her. Now I wonder where your sister is and why you dressed someone else like her?" How did the king knew it was Jaiblynn who asked me to do that? What is happening here?

"Okay sorry, I admit it was me, dad, so please let that poor girl go. Eleni went down to the city again and I didnt want her to come in more trouble so I asked Rosalinda to pretend to be her for only this night" I looked to Jaiblynn and asked him if he was telling the truth from my mind but he didn't answer me. He wasn't even looking at me. I guess I made him very mad.

"So who is this Rosalinda and you still didn't explain what she was doing in my library with a spell book." That made him look at me but I wished he didn't because he was clearly very very mad at me.

"Rosalinda is also from the down city and it was me again who asked her to take a spell book for me so that I could take it to Eleni. You know that she still hasn't got her wings so I thought maybe she could try some spells to see if she got her powers." He saved that well I'll give him that.

"Eleni is the shame of our bloodline and if you continue like this you will go down with her. Now put this book back to its place and come down to the fest before ruining my night furthermore" Chaol said and went out of the library with hard steps.

I let out a breath I didn't realize I was holding and looked guilty to Jaiblynn. He took a handful of powder and blew it to my face. And with that my tailored face disappeared.

"That is not necessary anymore" he said, still not looking at me.

"I am sorry, I ruined your plan" I replied feeling actually sorry.

"Why did you come here Rosalinda?" he asked, finally looking at me.

"You finally learned my name" I joked but he didn't laugh

"Well, okay it is a little complicated but basically I wanted to protect my mind from others and Dain told me I co-

"Wait, does Dain talk to you now? Why didn't you tell me about him earlier? And why didnt tell me you wanted a mindwall, I would have helped you if you told me. You can't do spells even if you want anyway, you need magic" he interrupted me.

"Well I figured that, your dad told me the same." I murmured.

"Why didn't you ask me Rosalynn, I thought you trusted me" he said softly this time. I understood that he wasn't angry anymore because he started to call me Rosalynn again but this time I was angry.

"What do you mean, trust you? You do understand that we just met today and I am in a pocket with faeries who want to brutally kill every human they see, right? This morning I was just a normal girl in my human and now I try to survive between faeries. Just because you were kind enough to let me live didnt mean I will start trusting you whatsoever. I don't even know what you want from me?" I wiped the tears that escaped from my eyes at the end of my sentence. God, I was so tired after everything that happened today. I sat down and started loudly crying with overwhelm. I saw Jaiblynn sitting down in front of me with blurry eyes but I refused to meet his eyes. I finally felt that this world was too much for me. I was just a little human from a little town after all.

He reached to my face and wiped my tears with his hand and I looked at him.

"This is too much for me Jaiblynn, I want to go back to the human lands please let me go" I said with a shaky voice.

"I know my beauty, I know but you can't go back even if I let you. The pocket doors are cursed, you remember?" he replied softly. I looked at him again and stood up suddenly ashamed.

"Of course I remember, how could I forget. I just got carried away a little bit, let's go back to the dining room before your father gets more suspicious."

*****

We walked all the way back to the dining room in an awkward silence. I was too ashamed to say anything and he looked like he was lost in his own thoughts. He stopped right before the dining room pulled me to a little room.

"Look if you really want a mindwall I can do the spell for you now. It is better to do it before my father tries to listen to your thoughts anyway. And I am sorry you were right, you have no reason to trust me but I still want to say that I don't want anything from you. I just want you to be safe even though I know it is nearly impossible. I understand that you are afraid but just know that I am going to do everything I can to keep you safe. I owe it to someone who was precious to me."

I took several steps back and looked at him deep in his eyes to try to see if he was serious. " Okay Jai, I chose to believe you because I don't really have a choice but please protect my mom too, she is very important to me. And yes I still want the mindwall spell, I don't really enjoy sharing my thoughts to everyone around me" I replied half serious half joking.

He smiled at me and said: "I promise to protect both you and your mom Rosalynn."

*****

After he made the spell to protect my mind from unwanted outsiders, we left that room and went back to the dining room. All my nerves were very fragile at that moment, because of all that emotional talk. Even though I didn't wanted to watch the offer ceremony, Jai had said that if the king saw that I didn't came back he would be suspicious. And I agreed on that after all Chaol had just caught me trying to steal a book from his library. After everyone finished eating Chaol and his wife Ciradyl led us to another big room which according to Jai was the ball room. That room was much more spacious and better lit. Walls were red with gold lines, and there was also a lot of painting along the walls. This room didn't have a roof either and you could see the night sky with stars. It was sad to think that it was just an illusion. I could even feel and then smell the cold night air coming from the roof, it was amazing how realistic faerie illusions could be.

The man standing by the door was handing out a mask to everyone who entered. I was going to join a masked ball or masked massacre on my first day at this realm. It was like a joke.

When the King and Queen came on stage, everyone stopped talking and began to wait excitedly for the offer night to begin. It made me sick to think that all these people were excited to witness a murder. With the opening door everyone started to cheer and my stomach dropped. A servant brought a human inside with a bag at her head. Everyone clapped and cheered while the king bound the woman to a long board. Without letting the cheering stop the king took a knife and pierced it through the heart of the woman.

A scream echoed in the room and all the other sounds cleared from my ears. All I could hear was that scream of that familiar voice. I looked to Jai with tears and fear in my face denying how familiar that voice was. The king and queen raised their glass full of blood and drank it together. I threw up all the food I had eaten. With the familiar screaming voice at my head I looked back at women. At the same time the servant took the bag out from the woman's head and I saw my dead mom in front of me.

My ears started ringing with the sight in front of me. I turned to the people around me, waiting for people to react, but everyone was continuing the party. I turned back to my mother, who was standing lifelessly in front of me. It was too heavy, it was too much, I couldn't bear that much. My throat tightened and my eyes filled with tears, but I couldn't cry. I collapsed to the ground with the weight of what happened, but no one noticed me except Jai. I turned my head to Jai, looking at him helplessly and screamed. I screamed with all my voice. I screamed endlessly. I screamed for my mother, I screamed for her life, I screamed for my life, I screamed with everything I have. And yet it was not enough because my mom was dead. Killed in front of my eyes. I couldn't even cry, I just screamed until I couldn't anymore. I didn't stop until I passed out.

"You promised" I whispered to Jai at last and then everything went dark.
