First Day
~ 1 week later... ~
"I-IZUKU! Izuku, the letter is here! There's one for Erin too!" Inko shouts, scrambling on her hands and knees into Izuku's room and holding out twin envelopes. Since the entrance exam, I spent almost every day of the week at Izuku's. My aunt was pissed about this, of course. Kept saying I should appreciate what I have more.
"Why was the one for Erin sent here...?" Izuku wonders, taking the letters from mamadoriya's grasp. I was wondering the same thing. Inko leaves the room to let us read the notes. As we tear open the envelopes, an ID for each of us falls out. A small, circular disk also falls out, holograms of All Might springing up. Their words overlap a bit but we both understood what was being said. The last item was a paper sheet, a letter of acceptance with all the school supplies required for the year.
Izuku and I share a grin and we both jump up, opening the door to find a pacing mamadoriya. I stand smiling behind Izuku as he looks at the ground, looks at his mum, and smiles that god damn pure smile. My heart still melts when I see it!
Inko tears up, but it's from happiness. We spend the afternoon celebrating. It was made even better by the fact that Izuku and I were in the same class.
~ On The Day ~
I had arrived earlier than Izuku, even though I waited a few minutes. Now I stood in front of the excessively large door. Like god damn it was way too big. When I pushed the door open, only three other people were there. There was a boy with blue hair and glasses, a short boy with purple balls for hair, and...
'Oh sweet jesus.'
Bakugou.
His eyes fall on me and we both freeze. Not for long, though.
"Oi, what the hell are you doing here?!" he shouts, standing up.
"This is my class. Also please be quiet I don't want to deal with you right now."
"EH?!"
I ignore the raging blonde and turn my attention to finding a good seat to take. The boy with purple hair waves me over.
"Hey, you're cute! Sit next to me!" he says excitedly. I stare at him for a few seconds, paying close attention to his facial expression and his body language. Half grin. Wild eyes. Holding back drool.
"No thanks, I'll pass." I reply, moving away from the boy. I could tell from looking at him that he just wanted me to sit there because I was "cute". Sighing, I settle into a seat near the back. More students flood into the room, catching my eye every time. One student was the giant with six arms I saw on the day of the entrance exam, the floating uniform was back, one boy had a tail, another looked like he had more hair than brains. There was even a pink girl. I had never seen such a diverse array of individuals.
Finally, Izuku walked in the door. I gave him my most comforting smile and he gave a small wave back to me. Bakugou clicked his tongue in annoyance but didn't say anything. A few students were talking to eachother and the room filled with the buzz of voices. The door suddenly slides open and a man huddled in a faded yellow sleeping bag on the floor rolls to the front. Eight seconds pass before the room is quiet and everyone is in their seats.
The man sighs and stands up, giving me a clear look of his face. He had greasy black hair that hung around his shoulders, his eyes faded with heavy bags underneath them. He looked like he was in desperate need of sleep.
"It took you eight seconds to be quiet. If you're just here to make friends, then leave. My name is Aizawa, and I'm your homeroom teacher," he mutters, unzipping his sleeping bag and stepping out, "I know it's kind of sudden, but put these on and head down to the PE fields."
He produces a dark blue jumpsuit with the letters UA written in white, passing them out to us before leaving the classroom, his sleeping bag a limp heap of cloth out the front. I turn mine over a few times, marvelling at how well made it is, before jumping up and leaving the room. Izuku falls into step beside me.
"Good morning, Erin. Why do you think the teacher wants us to go down to the fields?" he asks, noticably avoiding eye contact with Bakugou. For some reason, the explosive boy kept looking back at us. Well, not so much looking as glaring. I shake my head.
"I have no idea. Maybe it's a test of some kind?" I reply, turning down a few corridors.
"O-On the first day?"
"I don't know. Could be something else."
We reach the changing rooms and go our separate ways. When I walk in, I realise there aren't separate stalls. My nerves were screaming now and I started trembling again, moving to a dark corner and changing there. The other girls around me introduced themselves to eachother, talking about their quirks, and I went unnoticed.
After I finished changing into the gym uniform, I walked out and noticed the boy with bright red, spiky hair talking to Izuku. I recognised him as the one who had more hair than brains. I sidle nervously to Izuku's side, not entirely sure about this new person.
"Oh, hi! My name's Kirishima. What's yours?" he asks excitedly, sticking out his hand. He reminds me of a small child.
"Erin. Nice to meet you," I reply, refusing the outstretched hand. I didn't like touching people I had only just met.
"Are you Midoriya's friend?" he continues as we start walking down to the fields together.
"Yeah. We've known eachother since we were four," Izuku says, smiling. I walk a bit hunched over, my shoulders tense and my hands stuffed deep in my pocket, refusing eye contact with Kirishima.
"Awesome! All my friends went to different schools, so I don't know anyone here yet."
"The only people I know here are Erin and Kacchan, but he's... not my friend any more."
The two boys continue to chat with eachother, effectively ignoring me, and I slow down enough for them to leave me behind. It was good for Izuku to be making friends and I felt like I wasn't wanted nearby right now. Someone else falls into step beside me and I glance at them. It was the pink girl from earlier.
"Hey, I didn't notice you before! You're Erin, right?" she asks happily.
"How do you know my name?" I question, returning my gaze to the ground.
"I asked the teachers before school started so I can make friends faster. I'm Mina Ashido, but you can just call my Ashido."
"Alright."
I knew in the back of my mind that I would forget her name within five minutes.
She continues to babble about her goals and I tune out to the noise, watching where I place my feet and occasionally glancing up to make sure I'm not about to crash into anything.
"Hey, why are you always looking down?" she asks when we're almost at the fields. I look up at her in surprise, not used to people asking this question.
"Because I'm used to it."
"Yeah, but why?"
"I'd rather not talk about it."
She frowns slightly but doesn't press for answers like I was expecting her to. I wasn't treated fairly as I grew up and as a result often refused eye contact with people. I was used to looking at the ground when I was around people because I didn't believe I was worthy of looking people in the eye, like I was below them. I sigh, speeding up and turning the last corner before coming out to the fields.
"Everyone here? Alright. Let's begin." the teacher says, then continues to explain what we'll be doing. The basis of it was that we would be doing a series of tests using our Quirks to boost our abilities. I was nervous about using mine in front of such a large group of people.
Bakugou demonstrated the first softball throw, scoring a massive 703.2 metres. My jaw hung open as he walks back to us. Then he smirked at me and my face transformed into a glare so quickly I thought it must be a world record.
Once it came to my turn, I began the shift to bird form. A few sharp breaths around me - one coming from the boy with the bird head, surprisingly - made my confidence take a dive. Izuku smiled encouragingly at me and the corners of my beak curl up. Bakugou clicks his tongue and looks away.
Taking the ball in one of my talons, I lauch into the air, throw it up above me, and use my wings to create an extra strong gust of wind to make the ball rocket away. I smile, watching it fly away before landing gracefully on the ground. Aizawa turns the device he uses to record the score around for me to see.
659.6 metres.
I sigh, shifting back to human form. Bakugou's smirk grows larger. I shove him roughly in the shoulder as I pass him. His smirk is replaced by a growled warning, but I ignore it, standing next to Izuku. The rest of the tests pass quickly and before I know it, the home bell rings. I wait at the gate for Izuku because he said he had to do something and Kirishima approaches me.
"Hey Erin! Good job on the test today," he says. I blink at him a few times, surprised that he even noticed me.
"Uh... thanks. You too." I reply, my eyes slightly wider than usual. He cocks his head to one side in confusion. Just then, Izuku runs up to us and saves me from continuing this conversation.
"Hey Erin! Ready to go?" he asks. I nod.
"Do you two live together or something?" Kirishima asks. My eyebrow twitches in annoyance. This boy asks too many questions.
"Close enough, by this point. Let's go, Izuku," I say gruffly, grabbing Izuku's arm and dragging him away. I had had enough of people for today.
"What was that about?" Izuku asks when I let go.
"He annoyed me. Too many questions."
"Oh. Okay."
I liked that about Izuku. He understood me on a level no one else does. He knows what makes me tick.
We walk the rest of the way in silence. Inko greeted us at the door and Izuku and I promptly fall into our beds. I sigh heavily, worn out from the day and from shifting my form so much.
"Well, UA certainly is interesting..." I mutter under my breath.
"Hm?"
"Nothing."
