Chapter 10
Over the course of the next four days, Lukas and Marion searched for the talisman needed to get to the Inbetweenlands. It hadn't been easy though Lukas had managed to get some advice from the beta of Packhaven, Xylo. Apparently the werewolf had been there before, who knew?
Anyways, this helped speed along his and Marion's search for a talisman but at the same time, Marion had his own work for the devil to attend to and well, after the third time he had come in late after looking for a talisman all day, Brandon had a talk with him.
"Lukas." Lukas paused where he had been taking his shoes off at the door and turned to see Brandon stirring a cup of toffee in the kitchen.
"Hey Brandon, didn't expect you to be up this late." He said walking further into the kitchen and stealing the mug of toffee for a minute and taking a sip, much to his brother's irritation.
"One, don't drink my toffee; two, I wouldn't be if you arrived home at a decent time." Brandon sighed and shook his head, taking the mug back with a small glare. Lukas opened his mouth to explain that he was still working on his surprise but Brandon interrupted him. "And I know what you're gonna say, you're working on that 'surprise' of yours. But that doesn't stop me from worrying about you when you're out at all hours of the night and won't even tell me who's helping you."
"You don't need to worry, Brandon, really, I-"
"You saying not to worry doesn't stop me from worrying, Lukas!" Brandon snapped before he could finish. "If anything that makes me worry more!"
"You need to rela-"
"Don't tell me to relax!" Brandon snapped again. "You can't expect me to relax when you're out 'til all hours of the night where something could easily happen to you!"
"Nothing's going to happen to me!" Lukas snapped back, tired of getting interrupted.
"Oh sure you say that but something very well could!" Brandon growled. "It only takes one thing attacking you once to cause you to never come back, leaving me to realize that I lost you too!"
"You're not gonna lose me, honestly, you're acting irrational!"
"I'm not acting irrational! I've lost too many people to lose you too!"
"Oh yeah, who exactly have you lost!"
"Oh you mean like our parents, and what about Maya huh? Then I lost Ritchie to another dimension and my ba-" He stopped and shook his head, glaring at Lukas. "The point is, I've lost several people who I cared about, I'm not losing you too."
Brandon thumped his cup down on the counter before saying. "I'm going to bed. You'd better not go out before I wake up again."
With that, the fallen disappeared down the hatch to his bedroom, leaving Lukas to stand there, feeling bad.
He wished he hadn't asked who exactly the other fallen had lost. Frick, he had forgotten about Maya and the fact that Brandon didn't know he was planning a way for him to see Ritchie again. And then there were their parents... if Lukas was honest with himself, he could barely remember them but then again, Brandon was older. It made sense that the fallen would remember.
Shaking his head, feeling worse, Lukas walked over and rinsed out the cup in the sink before heading upstairs to his own bed. The guilt was still there as he laid down though there was another thought that started to bother him as well. Why had Brandon cut himself off like that when listing the people he had lost?
