Prolouge

Breeze ran along the plank.  Their nearest neighbor, the Ganaglanch village, was attacking again.

She felt a spear shoot passed her ear, and she slowed and skirted around where it embedded itself in the Timber.

"Breeze!"

She looked up when she heard her name.

"Gallen!" she called, spreading her wings and leaping off the plank.  Her brown-haired boyfriend was here.  He'd know what to do.

They landed in front of a barn.  The Appudina, large meaty birds, we're loose and flying everywhere.

The couple embraced each other.

"Are you okay?  Are you hurt?" Gallen asked her.  She was still wrapped in his black-tinted wings.

"I'm fine for right now.  Oh, I'm so glad we're together; you always know what to do in a crisis."

Another spear flew past them.  "I'm fine as well, and amazed that we found each other.  Our classes are on completely different sides of campus!"

"Come on, Gallen! Now is not the time to talk education!  What do we do?"

"Get inside," he answered.  He opened the door to the barn to make sure all the livestock was out.  "C'mon," he gestured for her to get inside.

Breeze took a step forward, but right before she entered the barn, it exploded.  She was thrown back onto the landing, and a plank of heavy wood from the barn landed on her right wing.

She cried out in pain as Gallen gave a shout of alarm.  One of the Ganaglanchians had fallen onto the landing.  The warrior quickly recovered himself and looked at the couple.

"Not trying to take shelter, I hope," he sneared.  He grabbed Breeze and threw her off the landing, before grabbing Gallen and throwing him in the opposite direction.

Gallen was quickly able to catch himself in the air, and he looked around frantically for Breeze.

"Breeze?  Breeze!"  he called.

A cry from below called to his attention.  He looked down, and saw the light-brown hair and blue-tinted wings of his girlfriend.  She was trying to flap her wings, but everytime, she flinched and continued to plumet.

Oh, no, the explosion must've hurt her wings!  He thought.  "Breeze, I'm coming!"

He soared down after her, through the village.  Suddenly, a warrior rammed into him, and he was thrown in another direction.

He caught himself once again, only to realize that he had lost Breeze.  He looked below the village, scanning in every direction.  Once again, he called her name, but he was hushed and thrown into a building by some random warrior.

The doors shut and locked.  He was trapped.

Breeze was colder than she had ever been in her entire life.  The village was but a speck of dust far above her, and the bank of clouds far below her.  She tried to flap her wings, but once again, her right wing protested with daggers of pain.

She was so cold.  She was freezing.  And her head seemed to be exploding.

After what seemed like ages, it began to warm.  As the cloud bank got ever closer, the air was beginning to feel more like home.  She had learned Earth was extremely hot, and that none of her kind would survive its intense heat.  But if earth was this temperature, it couldn't be so bad.

After a while of falling, and her wing numbed from the cold, she hit the clouds.  Falling through them was like falling through thick, white, Appudina soup.

Her wing screamed in pain.  She could feel it again.  The air was getting warmer.  Much warmer.

Too warm.

She broke through the clouds.  And suddenly, Earth was there.  Beneath her: vast green, giant sploches of blue, patches of orange and yellow.

Her head was about to explode, she was sure of it.  Either that, or collapse in on itself.

And it was hot.  So, so hot.  And the ground was getting ever closer.  At the rate she was falling, she would surely not survive the landing.

But, that would be a better death than slowly being melted by the heat, she thought.

Still, as the ground got closer, she felt herself beginning to flap.  Instinct would not let her accept fate.

Ignoring the scoarching pain in her right wing, she pumped her only hope of survival.  She felt herself begin to slow, but the heat was making her weak.

Her head was swimming.  The pain in her wing was becoming invisible.  Her vision tunneled.

The next thing she knew, was that everything hurt.
