Chapter 3: Do You Know?

I land with a big splash into the lake next to the tree.

Caleb dashes to the edge of the lake, frantically yelling my name.

I smile at him as I climb out of the water. "That was refreshing!"

"Lani, you nearly gave me a heart attack!" Caleb screams.

"Sorry." I mutter, looking down at my bare feet. Dang it, my shoes must have fallen off in the lake.

As I trudge back to my dorm room, I feel more and more regret for making that promise to Caleb.

"Promise me that you'll never jump from any trees again!"

"But I--"

"Please, Iolani? At least when you're around me!"

I deeply sigh and stop walking. Why do I have to stop doing what I want to do? It's bad enough that the teachers never let me be free, but now my best friend is even restraining me? It's just not fair! I thought I came to this stupid school so that I can be welcome for my ability! Nope, instead I'm just punished for doing what I came to this place to do.

"Hey! Keep moving! This is a busy place!"

I look up to see some guy who I haven't seen before glaring down at me. Should I? I nod to myself and stare back at him. "And who might you be?"

"Look at me. Don't you recognize me?" He says with a sneer.

I take a step toward this guy. He has dark hair and bangs that come down to his navy blue eyes. He has quite broad shoulders for his age, I'm guessing around 14. I shake my head. "Never knew that you existed until now."

"You idiot, I'm the son of Mandy Chee!" He yells.

"Who?" I ask, not really caring about this dude at all.

"The model!" He screeches.

"Oh, yeah! That Mandy Chee!" I put on my best fake smile. I have no idea who Mandy Chee is, but I don't want to keep arguing with this random apparent son of her.

"So, now you know who I am?" He asks.

"You said it yourself. You're the son of Mandy Chee." I tell him. "Now that we're both assured of who you are, I no longer need to associate with you. I need to be going, now. Goodbye." I push past him and run as fast as I can back to my dorm, ignoring his yells for me to return.

I shut the door to my room, panting. That guy was weird, and I don't want to be interacting with him at all.

I walk to my laptop and open it.

"Who is Mandy Chee?" I say while trying to find information about her. As I finally think that I find something worth reading about her, there's a knock at the door. The special knock. "Come on in, Caleb!"

The tall boy runs into my room, waving his phone in my face. "I saw your call for help! What do you need?"

I quickly explain what happened with the son of Mandy Chee. "What should I do?" I ask him with a sigh.

Caleb simply shrugs. "My advice is to ignore him. He's just a big jerk that wants attention from people by claiming that he's more important than everyone else."

"Yeah, I guess you're right." I say, trying to reassure myself, but I can't bring myself to believe him, no matter how much I want to.
