Chapter 10: One Mistake After Another
I feel like the only place I can be alone these days is on the roof. After I left Morrin, I went to my favorite milkshake place on campus, and Caleb was there. We didn't say anything to each other. I just got my shake and left. Went to the lake, Morrin was there. Somehow.
Now I'm finally alone. On the roof. With a chocolate chip cookie dough milkshake. With my freakishly broad shoulders. With my freakishly long legs. And the stars. And the sky. And the moon and the wind and the trees and the view of the lake and the silhouettes of all the buildings and students running around after dark.
That's all I need, right?
Because if I talk to anyone else, I mess it up.
Mom.
Dad.
Caleb.
Morrin.
Just one mistake after another.
Out of pure anger and anxiety and fear and too many other emotions I can't describe, I throw my milkshake off the roof.
That cost me three dollars and twenty-seven cents!
I jump after it, grabbing it in midair and landing on a flagpole.
That was close.
"Woah."
I look up.
A girl is staring down at me from the roof. In the night I can't make out her appearance very well, but she looks horrified.
I jump up and grab the ledge of the roof with the hand that isn't cradling my three dollar milkshake and pull myself up.
Huh, that's new. Jumping up inhumanly. Cool.
"Listen to me. You didn't see anyth--" I start. Then it hits me.
She looks a lot like me.
