Chapter 1: Come Down

I sigh happily. From up here, I can see the entire high school campus, even the dorms.

I'm Iolani Watani, a freshman at Forestville Academy for Handicapped Students, a boarding school. Kids go here if they're physically handicapped, but there are also students here with Dyslexia, ADHD, Autism, and other things like that.

Me? I'm not sure why I'm here, exactly. I have all four limbs and I'm a straight B student. But, of course, my mother always told me that it isn't what I didn't have-- it was what I do have.

I make my way to my dorm building, smiling at one of my best friends here, Caleb. He has Dyslexia, but he's still one of most patient people I've ever met.

The tall boy waves to me and grins. "You ready for that math test on Friday, Lani?" He asks as he joins me on my walk to the dorms.

"Oh, I, uh, sorta forgot about that. I'll study tonight, thanks for reminding me." I reply quietly.

Caleb raises an eyebrow at me, but I don't reply.

Oh, dorm room 113. The most hated room on campus. There's a rumor that weird things happen there, like some kind of magic or something. Everyone thinks I'm crazy for wanting it, but it's a big room and it's all mine. No roommates, no extra beds, just some furniture and me.

I turn on my desk lamp and take out my phone. My thumb hovers over my mother's name on the contact list, but I just shake my head and toss my phone on the ground. I open my math textbook, but the words on the page quickly turn into scribbles.

After the summer of 3rd grade, my mom's and my relationship had sorta fallen apart.

Mom took me out to California for a vacation over the summer. We had gone hiking and I climbed a huge tree.

"Lani! Come down!" She had yelled, frantically pacing around the tree.

So I stood on one of the branches and jumped. The wind pushed around me in all different directions and just for one second, I felt like I was weightless, like I was part of the wind around me.

I ended up falling on my face, but I was okay.

My mother was furious with me, and when we came home from the hike, she hardly spoke to me.

I open my eyes wearily. Dang it, I fell asleep.

After about five minutes of staring at my textbook, I drift off into a memory from the end of 4th grade.

I peered around the corner.

Mom was with another guy in a lab coat. She sighed. "I-I just don't understand. She never did anything so-- so..."

The lab-coated man nodded.

"Reckless? She was always so sweet, but one day-- Bam! She just jumped!"

"Tell me exactly what happened next."

"She just-- glided? Flew? I'm not sure. She just seemed so graceful even though..." Mom whispered.

I sighed and walked into the kitchen, the room next to the living room. I could still hear the conversation between Mom and the other man, but most of it was too muffled for me to understand. I stood on my toes and opened the freezer, looking around for the ice cream. As I grabbed for the box, my feet slid out from underneath me and I was sent sprawled on the floor.

Mom dashed into the kitchen and just groaned as she took in the sight of me on the floor with the freezer door wide open and ice cream spilled everywhere. "C-clean this up, Iolani. And then-- leavve us alone! This is important, and I don't need some sticky 8-year-old messing me up!"

"I'm almost ten, Mom." I whispered quietly enough for her not to hear as she strutted away.

"Lani! Iolani, wake up!"

I look up, and Caleb is standing behind me. "What happened? Did I--"

"You fell asleep. Are you okay?" Caleb asks nervously.

I nod sleepily. "Not to be rude, but why are you in my room?"

"I needed to borrow your notes. Your door was open, so I didn't know if I should come in or not. So I did." My friend says, a small blush dancing on his cheeks.

"Take them," I say, standing up, but almost immediately falling over again.

Caleb catches me before I can hit the ground, and I grin goofily. "Sorry."

"Lani, are you positive that you're okay? You never fall asleep while studying, you never leave the door open, and you're not a clumsy person." Caleb asks.

I just shrug and smile.
