Chapter 7

Heather's muscles screamed as she sprinted through the forest, jumping over fallen trees and giant logs. She'd had been doing this for hours; her legs were burning and her chest was aching. The only reason she kept running was to train for situations where she couldn't use her magic to transport herself or her wings. What if Gretta and Frank caught up? She didn't want to think about it. Instead, she let herself enjoy the forest.

Light dappled the ground, filtering through the canopy, their web of leaves. All around was green, green, green. Feathery moss blanketed the trees and sticks snapped under her feet. Gnarled roots twisted, winding their way across the earth, the trees' boughs reaching towards the sky. Her fingers brushed the rough and winding bark, twigs snagged her hair. A few birds twittered and chirped, spreading their songs here and there.

Spying the glade where they'd camped, Heather slowed to a jog. The fire had burnt out; the blackened ground was all that remained. She walked over to the hut and hoisted herself up onto the rooftop. She sat and took in the glory of the forest.

She looked all around and-

There was a black cloud on the horizon. It looked strange and out of place, alien; as if it didn't belong there. Something was definitely wrong.

Is there a storm coming? Heather wondered. There had been light rain in the morning but not enough for a storm. The sky was a like an artist's canvas, swept and covered in sapphires. The sun shone, a golden, glowing orb, lighting up the world. Surely it couldn't be a storm?

She grabbed a nearby stick and magicked it into a pair of binoculars. She held them up to her eyes and gasped. The cloud was not a cloud. She saw spindly legs, green lenses, small metallic bodies and whizzing, whirring, buzzing wings.

Botfires. The deadly weapon-like robots that Frank and Gretta created to destroy...stuff.

They had sent the robots after them. To kill them. Without mercy.

The dark 'cloud' grew; it was coming closer and closer every second. Heather almost screamed. Her heart pounded in her chest.

"Finn!" she yelled, hopping off the top of the hut. "WE HAVE TO MOVE, NOW!"

He dashed out of the hut, a panicked expression plastered on his face. He looked around wildly. "What is it!? What's the matter??"

"That," Heather pointed to the Botfires, her expression grim. "That is the matter."
