---Prologue---
The rainforest was loud. Toucans squawk, monkeys swing from vines, and snakes twist around a jungle tree, climbing up to the canopy to hunt. On a thick tree branch, a large wooden hut creaked in the wind but otherwise stayed sturdy. The windows were low enough for a small dragonet to stumble over, a large hole lined with leaves and fluffy feathers left little room to walk around. In the hole were mountains of eggs, and a rainbow of all colours of the rainbow such as bright oranges and stunning pinks.
One egg sitting on the top of the pile was a pearly white with swirls of light yellow, making it stand out amongst the rest like a white rose in a field of daisies. Soft tapping sounds came from inside the egg as the unborn dragonet struggled to be set free.
A dragon landed on the side of the hatchery and peeked inside, noticing the pale egg struggling to hatch. She reached down wrapping her talons around the egg and hugged it protectively. The golden dragon tapped on its shell and pressed her ear against its smooth surface.
With the presence of another dragon the unborn dragonet cracked through its shell squeaking energetically. The dragonet was small in her hands like a tiny gem.
"Welcome to the world little one! I'm Canna" Cooed said softly, stretching her wings. "I was sure the stranger's egg wouldn't hatch! Lantana come have a look!"
Another dragon orange with flicks of red leaned in to take a look. "I'm surprised that egg hatched, it looked so pale," Lantana said leaning in to look at the newborn dragonet, "Is it just me or does it not have any wings?" They both stared at the small dragonet, everything was silent for a few moments.
"What are these!" Canna asked poking the two small buds where there were supposed to be wings. "Is it a disease?"
"It has no ruffs" Lantana added, scratching her temples.
"She's beautiful" Canna lifted the dragonet into the sun, examining her closely. "I have the perfect name for her," she said, her eyes glinting with curiosity.
"Well, what is it?" Lantana asked, curious.
"Buttonbush," Canna announced, Buttonbush squeaked appreciably.
-3 years later-
Life as a wingless dragonet was a constant struggle for Buttonbush, but she had learned to adapt to her limitations. Despite being unable to fly, she had become the inspiration of countless dragonets, but Buttonbush had her fare share of bullies. To make up for flying she leapt through the trees hooking her talons into the bark of trees and bounding to the next branch.
As she bounded through the trees, she called out to her friend Maple a forest green dragon with yellow wings and splatters of orange on her face, who was struggling to keep up. "C'mon Maple, stop being a slowpoke," Buttonbush teased, grinning mischievously.
"I'm not as good at bouncing through the trees you know, your like a monkey!" Maple replied, panting as she tried to keep pace. Buttonbush didn't slow down, She was too distracted by the thrill of jumping gracefully from branch to branch, the wind rushing along her scales. It felt like she was flying, Buttonbush felt normals when she leapt between the trees.
Buttonbush halted on a thick branch brushing of a leaf from her shoulder and smiling as Maple landed clumsily behind her. "Lets jump it!" Buttonbush pointed to another branch about three times the length of the biggest rainwing in the village, to Buttonbush this was an easy jump but for Maple it would be tricky.
Without hesitation Buttonbush leapt of the branch it vibrated wildly, Maple hooked her talons into the branch trying not to fall. Buttonbush streched out her talons and landed gracfuly on the other branch turning around to face Maple who's jaw had dropped to the rainforest floor.
"I cant possibly do that!" Maple yelled shakiing in fear.
"Dont be such a scardy cat!" Buttonbush replied in a mocking tone. "No cheating dont use your wings.
Maple tensed, she was sensidive about this stuff. "Okay i'll do it" Maple announced trying to act brave but was clearly shaking like a leaf. Maple lean back and jumped of the wooden limb but mid-jump the branch snapped, causing her jump to be to short missing the landing by a talon.
Maple disappear from view, falling through the trees and into the raging river roaring as it ate up Maple. "Maple!" Buttonbush screamed, panic rising in her chest.
Buttonbush leapt down to the riverbank next to the waters edge, her heart pounded in her ears. "I'm sorry Maple, I'm sorry. Please forgive me."
And from that moment on she was never the same...
CAN THE NEXT PERSON MAKE BUTTONBUSH DEPRESSED
