Part Four

The next two days pass slowly for Louis, he doesn't eat, hasn't really slept, doesn't really leave his bedroom and he's taken the next week at least from classes.

He hasn't heard from the two detectives, just Dan telling him they are looking into the third car and to try not to worry.

Louis can't though, he's scared if he's honest, he doesn't want to be accused of murder. The poor man he killed, he blames himself and the body on his windshield, he tries his best to block from his mind. .

Noah and Jake have tried to coax Louis out of his room, but they understand and don't want to push him, they will be there for him when he needs them.

It's Friday morning, Louis decided to have a shower and dress in his grey sweats and a navy sweater, socks on his feet. His injuries are feeling a bit better, he just feels bruised and winces whenever he moves suddenly or tries to sit down.

He makes himself a tea and is just settling in the lounge room when there is a knock at the door. Noah and Jake are out at classes so Louis answers the door.

He opens it to find an envelope on his doorstep, addressed to him. He looks around and down the driveway confused, he doesn't see anyone. He picks it up and takes it inside, closing the door behind him.

Before he reaches the couch he opens the letter.

"There's a reason for everything, you'll soon find out why I had to do what I did. Just know it's because you're everything to me" the note reads

Louis is so confused, he double checks that the letter is addressed to him and frowns. Something weird is going on. He takes the letter to his room and puts it in his bedside draw, he will deal with it later.

Just as he's sitting back down on the couch there's another knock at the door. Louis let's out a sigh and slowly gets up. He's feeling a little more sore now.

He makes it to the door and opens it to find Detective Styles and Wolf. They are both dressed impeccably in black suits, no ties, Louis can see their holsters around their chests and swallows thickly

Louis looks at them scared, thinking they are about to arrest him or something.

Harry and Scott take one look at Louis, the dark circles under his eyes and apparent weight loss and see he's not doing well. Something inside niggles at them, they feel a touch of sympathy which they don't really have for others, especially  when it comes to their work.

"Can we come in?" Harry says, his voice even

"Ummmm" Louis hesitates

"We just have some follow up questions, we won't take up to much of your time" Harry tells him.

Louis doesn't respond he just opens the door further for them to come inside.

When Harry and Scott step foot inside the house, they are hit with a vanilla and caramel smell, the house has such a homey feel and it's immaculately clean.

Louis leads them to the lounge room, Harry and Scott looking around the space as they go, trying to get a sense of Louis and who he is.

"Would you like some tea or something?" Louis asks

The boys notice he's still limping and must still be sore

"No thanks, this won't take long" Scott says

Louis gestures for them both to sit down, they do so on the end of the couch, Louis makes his way to the opposite end and the boys don't miss the wince when Louis sits down.

"How are you feeling?" Harry asks

Louis looks at them surprised by the question, thinking they wouldn't care at all. They are just being polite he realises

"I'm okay" he says warily

The boys nod at him, looking him over assessing. Louis is intimidated by their gaze and fiddles with his fingers

"Did you find the third car?" Louis asks quietly

This waiting game is killing him, he's on edge and can't settle.

"Not yet but there is some evidence that's come through to suggest there may have been another car involved" Scott says

Louis looks at them hopefully

"So you're not arresting me?" Louis asks and it's so innocent Harry and Scott nearly crumble.

"Not today" Harry says sternly instead

"There are tyre tracks that don't match your vehicle or the deceased, the cameras were conveniently taped over, so we weren't able to solidify your statement that way" Scott tells him

Louis looks down trying not to lose it, trying not to let his emotions get the better of him.

"So, you still think I'm lying?" Louis asks

"We're only going where the evidence takes us" Harry says

Louis sighs and shakes his head slightly

"So what do you want to ask me?" Louis says frustratedly

"Can you tell us about your background? Where you're from?" Harry asks

They've found information on Louis upbringing, but want to see if his story matches, a tactic used to get to know people and how they manipulate information. They want to see what Louis leaves out and what he lies about.

"Umm, well I grew up in Windsor Peaks, in this exact house" Louis starts, Scott and Harry look around the living room, they didn't know that small detail. "When I was 8, my parents died in a car accident, a drunk driver who got off on a technicality" Louis says bitterly. "I then got shipped to London, I was put in an orphanage, never adopted, no one wanted a me. I worked three jobs and managed to leave and come back here when I turned 18. I've been here studying for three years. I'm in my last year and work at the bookstore on Maple street most afternoons and some nights" Louis finishes.

Scott and Harry nod, Louis added some details they didn't know, but overall presented a vague recollection

"Why did you move back here?" Scott asks

"To be closer to my parents, they are buried here. This was my home, I feel safe here" Louis says.

"What's your relationship status?" Harry asks

Louis looks up and crinkles his nose

"Why does that matter?" He asks slightly defensive

"Just something we should know" Scott says with no room for argument

"I'm single and....gay....so" Louis says looking away.

This is where he's looked at disgustingly, where he's judged by two city slickers who have no clue.

"Noted" Scott says and Louis looks towards them and sees a slight smirk on Scott's lips, not what he expected. Heat flushes to his cheeks, and Harry and Scott actually find it endearing.

"Louis, do you know this man?" Harry asks as he brings out a black and white picture and hands it over, Louis takes it warily

Louis breath hitches and he looks at Harry and Scott shocked and upset

"Why are you showing me this?" Louis asks upset

"Do you know who that is?" Scott then asks

"Yes, Stanley Green, he killed my parents" Louis says upset as he practically throws the picture back at them both

"You went looking for him when you were 15 didn't you?" Harry says

Louis looks at them both in disbelief

"You found out who he was and ran away, you tried to find him to hurt him didn't you and the only reason you didn't get to him, was because the police found you within 24 hours, before you could make it back to Windsor Peaks" Scott says his voice showing no emotion, he's just cold.

"I was 15, I was a kid and I was upset. You try having zero family and being shipped to an awful place for years, treated like crap. No one cared and I wanted to feel something. I was only going to yell at him, try to make him feel guilty for what he did....I thought it would make me feel better" Louis says, looking down ashamed

Harry and Scott study Louis, they see his vulnerability, the way he plays with his sweater sleeves, his sadness underneath. They actually feel for him but this doesn't look good for him

"Louis....the man that was killed yesterday was Stanley Green" Harry then tells him blankly.

If Louis had planned this then he's a great actor because the look on his face is pure terror and hurt

"What?" Louis whispers unbelievingly

"You planned it out didn't you, followed Stanley, knew his routine and that he would be passing through the intersection at that exact time" Scott says, trying to gauge Louis reaction.

"Are you serious? I....I...would never do that, plus he doesn't even live here anymore, he hasn't for years, I wouldn't have moved back If he still lived here" Louis defends

The boys know that's true, Stanley hasn't lived in Windsor Peaks for at least five years.

"Why are you trying to make this my fault, I told you the truth and no matter what he did to my parents I would never do that to someone" Louis stresses

"We will be in touch" Harry then ends the discussion and he and Scott stand up to leave.

"So I'm just supposed to wait around until you decide to arrest me?" Louis says bitterly

They both don't answer, just look at him warily and go to leave.

"We will see ourselves out" Scott says

Louis puts his head in his hands defeated, he doesn't want to do this anymore. He hears the door shut and just cries.
