Chapter 0 "Prologue"
A world like no other is in front of our eyes. A world full of mysterious places previously traveled by the first men. A world where dream animals and creatures roamed all around us waiting to be discovered again. Various races of these as well as humans live in harmony, or at least they were.
In the year 1817 of the astral calendar, man discovers the power of steam and its uses in everyday life to make it a little easier. But there is never a lack of those who prefer to give it an unconventional use, creating new weapons to carry out their wars in a horrible way. This gave rise to powerful steel machines. These machines moved through heaven and earth. No place on the planet was spared the might of man. Huge cylinder-shaped balloons with a metallic covering came to dominate the beautiful blue sky that was now gradually tinted with a grayish layer.
The sky was no longer safe and the beasts no longer had a place to call home. They desperately seek refuge on the ground, where religious cultures were to idolize and protect them.
Time passed and they were safe for many years, away from the machines of man. But sadly nothing lasts forever. Unfortunately, the human instinct to seek superiority led them to an insatiable quest for absolute control of everything.
From that thought arose a religious ethnic group called "La Santa Cruz". It had a single purpose: destroy the rest of similar denominations, consuming or destroying them. But always looking for one thing they all had in common, the beasts. Idols considered pagan by La Santa Cruz.
With this as the only truth, the governments little by little were establishing much more solid foundations than before. Their capitals were no longer on the ground. Now they were in the vast heavens, where only people of immense purchasing power along with royalty and nobility stayed. Below, the citizens who maintained the cities of the powerful. They lived with fear from day to day because the wild creatures and the dangers that were in the lands attacked incessantly. Those soldiers who previously protected them, now found themselves in the heights. They were left alone and with little strength to defend themselves.
These incessant attacks led the humans living in the suburbs to develop a deep hatred towards non-human creatures. But not everyone thought this way, those who were not blinded by irrational hatred, decided on their own to establish ties with the beasts with a conscience, gradually leading them to passively coexist with them.
Some even, in a much more intimate way. This gave life to a generation of hybrids; humans and beasts . In appearance they were merely human, but they had some things that certainly set them apart; abnormal eyes, incredible superhuman strength and speed. Others also had different markings on the body.. These were easy to hide, so they could enter and leave the cities without problem.
Unfortunately, the man and his eagerness to consume everything makes his move. The religion of the holy cross began to hunt these hybrids with the excuse that they were an abomination that stained their race. They were from his point of view, a cancer that spread and had to be eradicated as soon as possible. This with the help of the church service troops and servants. They were trained as killing machines without a will of their own. They were perfect for carrying out the most horrible tasks commissioned by the high priest.
Small nations and many of the great powers took that initiative starting a mass genocide of hybrids. Although there were some who refused to participate in this horrible inhuman act. They started to shelter them in order to protect them behind their walls. This act was considered cowardly by his peers. The rest of the nations did not like it. They joined together to declare war on those who welcomed the abominations. From that moment on, years of countless wars were waged, claiming millions of deaths in the process.
A promising young man named James Wahit, he had enlisted in Her Majesty's Royal Army of The Proud Nation of Rish, where he proved to be far better than his companions. He excelled in all the activities he set out to do. When he reached the age of twenty-five in charge of general, he secured his own battalion of five thousand soldiers and his own ship. He called it "Revenge."
One of the last models that had been produced in the royal fleet, it had four turrets with three 406mm barrels each one. And more than fifty 20mm cannons, added to the antiaircraft or AA artillery that was located throughout the length of the aircraft. It also had an internal biplane aircraft warehouse and 307 mm armor, which protected it from attack by low-caliber artillery from smaller aircraft or aircrafts. Thanks to its four engines powered by the power of steam, Revenge took flight to fight on behalf of the king.
Our young general and his loyal crew battled across the width and length of the globe with a large number of accumulated victories to their list. They could overshadow the defeats he had suffered. The official body of the Royal Aircraft Academy did not stop awarding them medals of merit. Some had been granted by the king, arousing the envy and suspicion of his companions. In any case, he did not pay any attention because the medals that he carried did not see them as something to envy. They were a reminder of all the men who had lost their lives under his command because of their mistakes. By proving to himself that his decisions have consequences.
In situations he considered it his greatest punishment, but in others it was something honorable because it reminded him of the name of each of his men. The five thousand souls in his charge, he would remember until the day of his death. Every time new recruits were added to the crew, he went personally to greet them. Also, to remind them of the motto used inside their ship "In the ship everyone is equal." But this was an ideology that only he had. No other captain would accept this. He earned the respect of his men, and the hatred of his comrade generals.
The years passed and he ended up winning many more enemies than allies. But this did not matter to him, the only thing he always thought was that his beloved nation was safe, and that his men could return home to see their families. His biggest goal, which he clung to tightly. Sadly, war has no mercy on good men. The hatred and misgivings that he gained from the other senior officers eventually took shape.
In 2012, James was informed that an enemy fleet was not many kilometers from the capital, and had to take off as soon as possible. Without hesitation, he gave notice to headquarters so that his men would gather as soon as possible to leave. As he took off, what he did not know was that it would be the last time he would see his beloved and beautiful nation with his own eyes. The huge white palace with the gilded central dome, the great marble walls and the reddish roofs of the citizens' houses would be his final view . This nation, like many others, had decided to protect the hybrids. But the decisions made by rulers and sovereigns are not always well received by the people who live within the territory of the state. Unfortunately, in the military, hybrids were seen as inferior, things which they had no right to be officers.
This was the best kept secret of our beloved general, not only towards his men but also towards the other members of the army. Which, when one of his official comrades discovered it, made this internal hatred explode.
Upon reaching his destination, he could see nothing, only a strong storm. But no aircraft. When the engines stopped to remain suspended in the air, a projectile that came from the storm hit one of the sides of the aircraft. But it did not come alone, there was a complete download. The Revenge resists the impact, avoiding being completely destroyed. But still, it had suffered severe hull damage. This caused a sharp descent when another blow was heard. Looking in the direction of that latest attack, he sees that it was not an enemy aircraft. It was a sister. They had been betrayed by their peers. Now they were falling into oblivion.
James, confused by the situation and looking for an explanation for what was happening, makes a terrible decision. He orders the ship to be evacuated in its critical condition. He thought it was the only thing he could do. But new ships came to attack the Revenge, preventing these orders from being carried out. One of the projectiles hit the command bridge, opening a huge gap on the right side.
Everything was lost. The lack of control of the crew when losing the chain of command, the chaos of the explosions on all sides and the uncertainty of not knowing why their brothers were attacking them. This only creates more chaos. Our poor James was trapped by steel beams, completely deafened and with a gash that covered half his face. Being cut caused his right eye to slowly lose its former shine. His face was now covered in blood from the cut. His right arm was trapped as were his legs. He could no longer move. His only option was to use his gift to be able to loosen up. James began to reveal his eyes as his arms were marked with orange stripes, gaining incredible strength. Now I can easily remove those heavy beams.
His subordinates looked at him in amazement, not moving a single muscle. James, once free, stands in front of them calling their attention.
- What are you waiting for? Evacuate the ship! Now!
He kept silent, waiting for the possible reaction of his men when they knew the truth. Maybe, they will blame him for what was happening. The soldiers present in front of him drew their heels together and saluted him firmly confirming his order. He couldn't understand why after he had lied to them for so long, they accepted it. One of the soldiers responds with a slight laugh to the question that was hovering in his head.
-Sir, you are the only officer in the entire army who treats your men so well. That is a reason for respect. You have never denigrated us for where we come from and you always treated us as equals. That is why we do not care who you are, since you will always be our general.
As he finishes saying these words, the soldier walks up to him and helps him. Other 2 were added. They carried him in their arms.
- Sir, you will go with us.
He now understood something that he had previously ignored for some time. His orders were going to change. He couldn't let a betrayal cloud his judgment like that. If he did, ¿Was he proving to his men that he was a coward? ¡No! Never.
The ship continued to fall slowly, while the fire did not cease. Since life is a roulette wheel, it always surprises us. James released himself from his men and approached the onboard communicators to give his last message to the crew.
- Ladies and gentlemen, it has been a long journey. But it seems that this is where we say goodbye. We have been betrayed by those whom we considered brothers. Now we are in a direct fall into oblivion. I have reports that the capsules are being attacked by one of the ships. There is no way back. It is my duty, as your captain, to inform you that it will all be over soon.
He pauses, and then takes all the air into his lungs.
-But not before giving our last battle! These ingrates thought they would end the Revenge and our men with this cowardly act! No, they will never finish us off without a fight. Everyone returns to your battle stations. If they want to kill us all, we will take a few of them with us. Gunners, load the guns. Pilots start their engines. And gentlemen, good hunting! - He finished his speech with a proud smile.
Soldiers are inspired, and lose their fear of certain death. A loud battle cry echoes through the entire ship. The combat would not end until the last man or woman aboard the Revenge was dead.
Those who were already celebrating their victory did not expect what would happen. The Revenge began to rise, gaining height. The cannons were readied to be able to shoot, aimed at the enemy ships. The few remaining planes were leaving the cave loaded with explosives. A few minutes later, the tables began to turn. James stood with one arm behind at the top of what was once the command bridge. He, with a wave of his unoccupied arm, gave the order to open fire.
The cannons roared with fervor. The airplanes destroyed the hulls of the other ships and the rival airplanes without problem. The experience gained from the battles of the Revenge had given them the ability to be the elite of the elite. No other crew compares to that crew. Now, those who hid behind the victories of those who now betrayed, met with incomparable fear.
Round after round, the Revenge fired incessantly. Its perseverance, despite the conditions he suffered, was what attracted the curious gaze of a phoenix. A creature believed to be extinct.
This little animal approached the Revenge to see it more closely and see how one of the planes passed with a low flight and they machine-gunned James. The phoenix approached his body which gradually cooled down , placing itself on James's chest, just above his heart bloodied from the shots. He nails his claws, holding his heart with them and allowing him to live more time. Looking him straight in the eye, he asks him a question.
- Are you afraid of death?
Dying James nods, but responds at the same time.
- If you ask me about the fear of dying, the answer of any man will be yes. But what really terrifies me is what we left behind.
Surprised and satisfied by the human's response. He knew that these were true and not empty words of a dying man. The bird asks another question.
- Do you want to live again? But that can bring you deep regret.
James accepts, but not on his own. He doesn't do it in a selfish act. James did it to save his men. They could lose the head of the serpent, and the body would fall. It was not a luxury that he could afford, for this reason he decided to accept the phoenix's proposal.
When he accepted, that beautiful bird with reddish and orange tones like the sun itself, began to turn dark tones with the exception of a single feather. His eyes turned crimson red and he began to heal. But he was accompanied by an intense burning in his eyes, as in every part of his body where there was a wound before. He could feel like second by second, his damaged eye was beginning to heal. Also, he recovered his vision and his ligaments were united. It was comparable to being supported by a piece of red-hot iron on each fragment of your body.
Rolling over in pain between screams and screams, one of the soldiers approached him. Seeing him covered in blood. He thought the worst. But next to him was that black bird. The soldier could not identify with any other bird that he had seen before.
But he ignores the bird because he was more interested in the health of his superior than in a strange bird. He approaches and manages to remove his hand from her face. He see it. His eye, which was once emerald green, was now tinted a hellish red.
- What has happened? - Asks the worried soldier.
But Jmes only stands up while raising his hand for the bird to land on it. He looks at his face and asks almost whispering.
- Can you kill these ships?
The confused soldier thought he was talking to him. Being about to respond, he is interrupted by the takeoff of the bird, which emitted a very thick black smoke when it flapped its wings, accompanied by the stench of ashes. The one who is their general returns to his position before he was shot, but this time he sees the phoenix and its flight.
When it reaches the aircraft in front of them, a black fire covers it completely, increasing its size ten times. He began to incinerate the ships around him, with a ray of fire completely dark as the void itself, which did not allow the sunlight to pass. It did not touch the Revenge and its biplanes. Those were flying close to enemy aircraft. The soldier when he saw this, he fell on himself terrified and surprised at the same time. He could not believe what he was seeing.
James turns with a dull smile. This marked the beginning of something great. He took short but firm steps. He passed by the soldier lying on the ground heading for the exit of the bridge while a shadow that emerged from behind his back began to cover him completely.
That was the last time that the Revenge was seen. The stories that were generated by the adventures of the powerful aircraft and its crew transcended time to this day. Now, it is nothing more than a ghost story for children and a legend of terror about captains who betrayed their companions.
