Waiting on coffee I heard you laugh
I felt you standing close to me
I wondered what was going on
but I was too reserved to look and see

You bumped into me and apologized
and I looked right into your smiling eyes
You were one of those friendly types
and I was aloof there at your side

I nodded and said it was okay
I tried to move a step away
but not so far as to offend you
Social graces are not what I do

You ordered your drink and I waited on mine
we quietly spent this awkward time
Strangers in forced polite circumstances
are held in momentary little dances

Then the barista tripped where she was at
and made a loud unavoidable scene
Then it was I who couldn't help but laugh
thinking about how she spilt the beans

You looked my way and smiled too
but it felt even more absurd
I tried to make a quip to get me through
but I was the one tripping over my words
