CHAPTER SIX

An icy wind roared through camp, cats now hiding in their den to scared, tired, and hungry to leave their warm nests.

Stripenose had tried to go to the dirtplace tunnel to make some dirt but he ended up slipping on his paws, hitting the ground muzzle first and making his nose bleed. He was now in the medicine’s cat den, hiding from the crucial weather.

Silentstar stood, sitting up in her moss nest as she stared out into the deserted, snow covered, clearing. Snow had been falling slowly, and silently for what seemed like days now. Ever since Applepaw's shocking death, a thunderstorm rolled in, just for it the back right back out and for it to start snowing.

Silentstar had been awake for a while now, having had kept herself busy by sleeping but now, she was wide awake. The howling winds now louder then before. “I need to do something.” she meowed, thinking. But, what was there to do? Another thought answered her. There was nothing.
The winds were terrifyingly strong, be able to make a warrior stumble and fall, but the clan would be useless if they did absolutely nothing. The clan needed to be active!

Stumbling out of her den, she peaked out, immediately being greeting by a large gust of wind. Her nose and whiskers growing icy cold, she retracted back into her den. Fur puffing out.
What was she to do? The clan also needed to be fed but the wind and chilling cold would have had driven all the rabbit into their burrows for hibernation.

Narrowing her eyes she quickly took notice if the large shadow of an eagle circiling above the camp. It was something uncommon all together, especially in this weather. Silentstar watched the bird circle before something caught its eyes. Suddenly it let out an ear peircing screech as it flew down, talons extended as it planned to grab something.

Suddenly a tiny wail and a heart wrenching gasp sounded loudly from near the nursery.

“Sparkkit!”

Silentstar watched wide eyes as the eagle snatched Sparkkit off the ground, the young kit wailed, flailing her paws as the large brown feathered bird prepared to take flight. Milknose jumped out of the nursery trying to grab her kit back, Silentstar growled, bolting from the den.

The wind made her struggle but with a massive leap, she caught the bird. Almost missing. Sparkkit wailed louder, “Get off of her!” she snarled. The added weight of her brought the eagle down slightly but not enough as it screeched in fear, its large, feathered wings flapping urgently as it tried to take both her, Sparkkit and itself away. Silentstar kepts her claws dug deep into its leg, her own legs scrabbling to touch the snow covered ground, her tail and fur being wipped by an icy chill. She would not let this vile bird take a queens kits!

“Silentstar!” A voice gasped as it stumbled to her aid, hooking her legs with their claws, Silentstar couldn’t tell who it was but it didn't matter, she was just grateful for help. Then another hiss started, leaping and grabbing the birds left wing and brought it closer to the ground. The eagle struggled in their shared grasp, hitting both her and the warrior with its sharp beak, Silentstar struggled to keep ahold, utterly terrifed herself. The eagle dugs its talons deeper into Sparkkit’s small form, the ginger kit cried out, her fur beginning to turn red, and she began to start struggling even more. Milknose cried out at the sound of her kits pained cries, still trying to get to her daughter, her only other kit.

The eagle gave another flap of its massive wings, the warrior holding onto her let go, cursing under her breath. Silentstar yowled, her claws dragging down the birds side as she stumbled, falling into the snow. “Stalkpelt! Let go!” it was Lichenstep beside her. She was bristling in fright.

Stalkpelt’s voice yowled from above, holding on tightly, though it seemed so from her angle. “I’m not letting this kit die!”
The eagle turned on Stalkpelt, dropping Sparkkit from almost 4 and a half feet high. Sparkkit fell to the ground with a sickening thump into a large bank of snow as Stalkpelt struggled against the large bird of prey. Silentstar was already back to attacking, “don’t you dare hurt my warriors!” she snarled, another flash of fur and now Clayfur was desperately trying to drag the bird down, the wind was still whipping the four of them around. “This bird is food! Don’t stop attacking!” he ordered, Silentstar didn’t need to be told as she was still was attacking.
Her claws slashed at the birds leg, again. Stalkpelt was aiming poor-looking blows to the birds head when Stalkpelt was thrown off, loosing his balance and falling to the ground with a thud, similar to that of Sparkkit’s. Silentstar gasped, and she jumped off, Clayfur bit at the eagles leg, trying to drag it down, Lichenstep began to help too, but the soon the go and the eagle flew off, screeching at them with bloody wounds.

Clayfur stumbled to his paws, Silentstar stood panting. A wound on her chest bleeding. Milknose was hovering over a small scrap of bloodied fur. “Milknose.” she gasped, rushing to the queen. Hayface and Grazeheart stood, peering out from the nursery were they where staying with Milknose and the other elders.

“Sparkkit. my baby.” the queen was trembling over her daughter’s body, the snow stained crimson around Sparkkit’s small body. Silentstar nudged the queen towards the nursery, “She has to go to Frozensight.” she whispered. Milknose lashed out, hissing. “Don’t tell me what to do!” she snapped. Silentstar backed away, the wind had ceased, though it was still unbelivebly chilly. Clayfur was nuding Stalkpelt, “Stalkpelt.” he mewed, trying to get his nephew on his paws. “Clayfur.” Silentstar mewed, pain in her voice. how much death would happen? So close to eachoher too, and one of them was just a five moon old kit.

“Birchback is already depressed with being Rosethroat’s dead, what will he do when he find out his son is too?” Clayfur looked up with round, emotional, eyes. She had no idea what to say to her deputy, “I…” she stopped herself before shaking her head. “Let’s get him to Frozensight.” she meowed gently, Clayfur hesitated before he nodded and pulled him through the snow by his scruff. Stalkpelt was so heavy, he was a full grown warrior.

Clayfur looked ahead, eyes narrowed, a mask of many emotions. Frozensight was already waiting outside their den for them.

"He was a good warrior, the best so it seemed." They whispered, closing both their eyes. "but, I know I can't save him. He landed on his neck, you know I can't either."
Clayfur placed his nephew down at Frozensight's paws, "he had a beautiful family, he had two beautiful kits." He sniffled, "but he'll be able to meet Appleheart again, he'll be happy to see her." Silentstar placed a comforting tail on her friends shoulder.

StarClan has taken many of my warriors...
