Chapter 5: They're Tolerable
Your bad feeling came true, since Grount had come on the ship you had close to 6-10 patients a day with most of them having to stay in sick bay overnight. Garp had attempted to get on your ass about you missing training but when he saw the mess that was his medical bay he promptly shut up and walked out.
You still ran every morning adding 5 laps each day. Your goal was to run the 300 laps in 90 minutes 30 minutes for each set of 100. Right now you were stuck at 210, and it was taking you two hours. You'd consulted with medical journals and nutritional books. But now you were hitting a wall, you'd never been a very physical person so you weren't sure what else you should try.
You were in the middle of trying to write a schedule for yourself when Grount bursted in the room, his right arm popped out of socket. Koby trailing behind him.
"Get the hell away from me Koby!"
"I'm sorry Grount. You said you wanted us to have 'no holds bar.' I truly wasn't trying to do that to you. But I slipped."
"Shut up! Hey doc fix me up so I can go back to kicking the recruits' asses!"
You sighed and guided him to one of the cots that was empty.
"I have patients sleeping please keep your voice down, we're not at a fight club."
"Just fix me dammit!"
"Grount! Sorry Y/N-San."
"Your name is Y/N?" You nodded your head. "Suits you." He said so nonchalantly without any kind of real emotion or attachment that it didn't bother you to receive the compliment.
"Thank you. Now sit." He sat you straddled his legs for leverage. Causing him to blush just a tad. "On the count on three. One." You popped it into place.
"Shit!! What the hell??! You said on the count of three!!"
"You would've stiffened up, causing me to break your arm." You went to get a sling and guided his arm in it. "No more sparring for today or for the rest of the week. You are to take it easy."
"Bullshit!" You shrugged your shoulders.
"Fine you can try but you'll be weaker than everyone else. Even Garp the Hero needs time to recover. We need our better soldiers at their strongest when pirates strike." He blinked at you as did Koby. "It's your life do with it what you will, I will write my recommendations you can choose to follow them or ignore them up to you."
Silence, and then laughter. This jerk was laughing.
"I like you! Your straightforward and don't mince words. Later Y/N." And then he walked out with a wide eyed Koby chasing after him.
"What a weird day." You muttered than proceeded to check on your other patients.
——Koby's POV——
<Dinnertime>
"What's the matter with you Koby?" Helmeppo asked glancing at his friend.
"Nothing..." Koby mumbled. And went back to staring at Grount and Y/N-San again. When Y/N-San had come into the cafeteria Grount had waves her over and invited you to join them. She had refused, and went to sit somewhere else. Before Koby could say that she preferred to be alone but Grount went to talk to her anyway, leaving his food at their table. He'd been there for five minutes.
"I don't know why you're so upset. She's not even looking at him and it looks like he's doing most of the talking." Helmeppo was enjoying teasing his friend.
"I'm not upset."
"Uh-huh sure you're not."
Before Koby said something back Grount came back smiling. It annoyed Koby to no end, and he didn't know why.
"She's interesting. She's a no nonsense kind of person. I like that."
"You do know no one likes her right?"
"Koby does and so do I. So I guess that's two people who like her. You're the odd man out of this one Helm." Helmeppo just grunted and continued to eat his food. Koby on the other hand put his hands under his chin and got to thinking.
I like her?
"Well yeah don't you? If you didn't you wouldn't be trying so hard to get her to be your friend." Guess he said that out loud.
"She just seems so lonely, and sad. It kinda makes me feel sorry for her to be all alone."
"Maybe she's okay like that? I mean she's never truly alone. She's on a Naval ship for crying out loud. I think if you change your approach you might produce better results." Koby lifted an eyebrow at his friend. "Take what I just did, I went over asked a few questions and then I let her be. Maybe one day she'll have a two minute conversation with me since I went at her pace. You can't treat two people the same, cause everyone is different. Just something to think about." He went back to eating and Koby went to bed thinking about what Grount had said.
He's so impulsive and impatient normally. You wouldn't think his strong-willed personality would allow him to conceive how someone else was feeling...dammit I am being judgmental.
"Maybe I'll try it his way and see what happens." And with that he went to bed rather peacefully.
——Reader's POV——
You hadn't been transferred yet. It was weird. Normally after three months your unit would tire of your attitude and gloomy nature and do everything in their power to get rid of you. You were coming to find out Garp wasn't anything like that, if anything he encouraged you to keep being yourself. Grount too seemed rather okay with how you were. You still refused to spar with him, cause he'd probably kill you. He would call you a chicken and then move on.
You did however start sparring with others, you were no fighter and it showed. Out of 10 spars you'd come out victorious maybe 2-3 times. The people who beat you, would gloat and mock, as if it was supposed to bother you somehow. Your lack of interest and anger would push them over the edge.
Like now for example. You had just sparred with a Lieutenant and he was very proud of himself, throwing his fists in the air, his foot still on your ribcage.
"Hell yeah! How you like that you fucking ghost!" A few people hooted and hollered, some even went on to mock you some more. You just laid there with his foot still digging into your ribs, making it hard to breath. He's going to break at least three of them if he doesn't move soon.
"Whatever. Please get off of me. I'd like to breath normally again." This just seemed to tick him off more.
"The hell you just say." You felt a rib break, you coughed up blood, this is when people started to get a little concerned.
"O-oi man, you won, let Ghoul Doc up."
"Yeah man you wanna get in trouble with Garp?"
"Shut up the old man isn't here, and if I were an enemy she would've been dead a long time ago. If I was a pirate, I would've broken her wrists, then her ankles just to watch her squirm. I'm tempted to do it now..." He gave you a creepy look, then a smile, you frowned knowing what was going to happen next but had no physical strength to actually stop him. Dammit this is going to hutrt. "I'll settle for a few broken ribs though~See ya doc." He lifted his foot and started to bring it down. The last thing you felt before passing out was immense pain. You didn't scream though, you had some pride and wouldn't lower yourself to beg him to stop.
<Grount's POV>
His arm was feeling a lot better, taking a few days off like Y/N had suggested had helped. He did other training and felt stronger than ever, he decided to go to the training grounds to spar with some unsuspecting soldiers.
"Shut up the old man isn't here, and I were and enemy she would've been dead a long time ago." The hell was that about? "I'll settle for a few broken ribs." Grount heard something break from the ring, when he finally saw he was shocked. There was the Lt. stomping on Y/N, who looked as though she had already lost. "Oh damn that felt awesome. Hey we should all get some frustrations out, I mean Garp has refused to get rid of her despite everyone asking for her, and her personality pisses you all off, doesn't it? If she has to quit cause she got too hurt in training, we can all go back to taking t easy, instead of wasting our time on someone so useless in a fight."
Grount had heard enough, you were bleeding from your mouth, head and...ears? Crap you were really hurt, what's worse you were the ship's doctor. Grount saw him lift his foot again to squash you, just before he moved, the moron had been catapulted into the stands.
"WHAT THE HELL?" When the dust cleared he saw Koby, slowly and carefully pick up your limp body, and stare at all the people in attendance.
"You all 2,000 laps. NOW! I'll be back to give out the rest of your punishments, if I learn that someone tried to skip out or not run, you'll get it as bad as the Lt. there." He turned to see Grount and gave him a dirty look.
"Hey man don't look at me like that I got here right after he did it."
"Yet you still just stood there and didn't bother to check on Y/N-san. Make sure they do the laps Grount, I'm taking her to the HQ hospital, I'll be back in about an hour."
"But-" Koby pegged him with a look, that if it could kill, Grount would be dead. "Yeah, got it."
Koby started to run, and Grount turned to everyone there.
"If you think you'll just be running, you're sourly mistaken. I need to let loose some energy." They all sweat dropped and looked terrified. Hope you're okay Y/N
<Reader's POV>
Pain, it was everywhere. Most of it radiated from your abdomen, most likely from the broken ribs you sustained. You were in the hospital, you kept your eyes closed but you opened your ears to see if you could hear anyone around, so you could ask about what other injuries you might've gotten.
"Y/N-san are you awake?" You heard the young Captain's voice, filled with worry and concern, you opened your eyes and stared at him. "Oh thank goodness! You scared me! I'm so happy you woke up!" He plopped in a chair next to you and put his head in his hands in relief.
"How long?" You winced damn, even talking hurt like a bitch.
"How long have you been here?" You nodded. "Four days. You have a feeding tube, the head doctor said that you could go back to the ship when you woke up, he gave me your care instructions, but your a better judge of it than me. Did you want me to get the doctor for you?" You nodded again. "Be right back, one moment."
You watched him get up to go, he looked tired. How long had he been here? The whole time? Just during visiting hours? Thinking about it was giving you a headache.
Why the hell should I care? It his business what he does, I never asked him to stay with me or even bring me here. No one tried to help me, they were probably hoping I'd die. Sometimes I wish I was brave enough to end my own life, but I'm a coward...cause at the end of the day...I don't want to die.
"Hey Y/N! You're finally awake. Geez didn't think you'd ever wake up." Grount loudly entered your room, making your head throb. You held your finger up to your lips hoping he'd get the point. He didn't. "You should be grateful I beat that asshole up for you, I mean after Koby did but you get the point. You owe us, you better be grateful." He laughed waking up a few people who grumbled at him, and giving you dirty looks. I didn't ask for him to visit, don't blame me.
"Grount, you really need to be quiet, this is a hospital." Koby was back with the round pudgy doctor who kept fish bones in his mouth. "Here's the doctor Y/N-san." Koby smiled at you.
He took the feeding tube out and handed you pain medication along with your intrutions.
"I don't need to lecture you missy, you're a medic you'll understand everything in here. Koby here said he would take you back. Remember to be gentle. You'll be out for a week, and then you'll be on part-time duty after that. I let Garp know that you are not to spar for at least 2 months. Understood?" You nodded, after the tube was out, you dressed, very very slowly. Every movement hurt. After your bra was on, you heard the curtain open again.
"Oh shit, my bad." Grount went to close the curtain again, but not before you heard Koby swat him over the head.
"You moron!"
You smiled, then gasped. You hadn't smiled in over two years. And here you were, smiling at their stupidity.
I guess they're both tolerable.
