Chapter 4: Attempt at Friendship

"That's it for today, Little Doctor. You will train on your own next week. Since you have appointments to get through. All I can say little Lass is you have a long way to go."

You were panting, sweating and currently hunched over your knees. This crazy bastard clearly didn't understand the phrase "ease into it."

"You okay Y/N-San?" No I am not!!! Instead of answering though you held up a thumb still bent over.

"Make sure she makes it to the infirmary Koby. Just in case she faints."

"I'll be fine." You spat out, getting a little fed up with the damsel in distress related comments. The past two weeks Garp had been making snide remarks about your abilities or you lack of certain capabilities. You were a medic for crying out loud!
"I'll take myself there." You gathered all your spiteful energy and strutted off the training grounds, for about two minutes you were able to maintain your posture but once you arrived to the stairs you crouched again, your exhaustion finally getting the better of you.

"That fucker is crazy!"

"Y/N-San?" You jolted at Koby's voice. Why did he always manage to see you at your lowest points? It was getting annoying!

"Yes Captain Koby?" You didn't even have the energy to lift your head to meet his gaze, but to your surprise he knelt in front of you to meet your eyes.

"Are you alright? You can tell me if you're not. I promise not to say anything to Garp-San." You turned your head away from his gaze. You never sulked in front of people, however you were unable to move at the moment and didn't want to speak to him.

"I said I was fine." You attempted to get up but your legs just didn't allow you to do that. When you caught Koby's stare he looked worried and upset. Giving up you brought your knees to your chest and just sat there.

"Y'know Y/N-San, I used to be a crybaby. A coward no less. I was kidnapped from my home, and brought onto a pirate ship." Seriously?! "Her name was Alvida, she was fat and ugly and wielded a big heavy iron club. She'd hit me, starve me and force me to do things I didn't want to do. I'd feel sorry for myself everyday, and told myself that one day I would become a strong, brave marine. But I made excuses everyday as to why I wouldn't try to leave Alvida's ship. Mostly I was just a cowardly crybaby, and wanted to live. And do you know what the worst of it was?"

Now you looked at him. He was a handsome guy, nice and an extremely talented soldier. He was confident, brave, positive and warm hearted. That's how you'd come to know him after these last couple of months...it was hard to imagine him any other way.
"I did that for 2 years. Begging for my life. Until one day someone woke me up. He punched me and told me he hated cowardly crybabies the most, he gave me the courage to stand up to her."

"Who was he?" You couldn't help but ask.

"Hehe Monkey D. Luffy." He said with a smile. "He's my friend." Your eyes betrayed you, they went wide with surprise making the young captain chuckle again. "I know, he helped me enlist in the marines, and ironically his grandfather is the man who trained me."

He was being surprisingly open with you.

"Why are you telling me all of this? You don't even know me." He smiled and stared at you. Your heart gave a little beat. What was that about?

"Cause I believe you've been hurt before, and it takes a lot for you to trust someone. I figured if I opened up about my biggest shame you might come to know me a little better."

"Why would you care?"

"Cause I want to get to know you better. About what makes you Y/N-San. Your likes, dislikes, hobbies etc. I want to be your friend. I want to become someone you can trust."

You both sat in silence for a very long time. You didn't know what to make of what he said. He seemed sincere but so had others who claimed to want to be your friend.

"Friends are a waste of time." You finally said.

"What?"

"They're a waste of time. I don't want anything to do with your friendship, or anyone else's." He looked so sad when you said that. But he had other friends around him. He wasn't going to miss much. "My legs feel better of you excuse me sir, I'd like to take a shower. And I'd prefer it if you didn't bother me during meal times. Have a good night."

~Koby's POV~

Koby couldn't get over what Y/N-San had said.
Friends are a waste of time...I don't want anything to do with your friendship, or anyone else's. His heart sank remembering her saying that. He really thought he'd been making progress with her. The thing that surprised him, she didn't seem sad when she said it either, just resigned. She wasn't rude, callous or mean about house she said it either. She said it so matter of fact lay that Koby couldn't help but feel sorry for her.

When he walked into his shared room with Helmeppo, his sour mood didn't improve.

"Yo Koby, how did training go with the ghoul?"

"Don't call her that Helmeppo-San!"

"That's what everyone calls her Koby! She gloomy, creepy, quiet and doesn't talk to anyone unless she has to. She's no different than a ghost!"

"STOP! She's just a lonely person who has a past. She's probably said what she said cause she's been hurt and is protecting herself!"

"When she said what?"

Crap he hadn't meant to let that slip, he was frustrated dammit. He couldn't begin to comprehend her personality, or why she was the way she was. And now she'd told him that aside from training she wanted nothing to do with him.

"Koby you aren't ya know...um attracted to her or anything like that are you?"

Am I what??!!!

"No no no no no no! I mean she's not ugly, but no I just...I don't know what I was trying to do." He took his bandana off, and placed his glasses on his desk and plopped on his twin bunk. "She said I inspired her, when I stood up to Akainu, she said I had her wanting to work harder than she normally would."

It got quiet. Koby closed his eyes and just waited for Helmeppo to say something. All he could see was your face. You were indeed gloomy, but he'd seen you before sitting by the window reading books smiling. Sometimes he would see you sketching in a book, never had the guts to ask for a look but you always looked at peace doing it.

"Is it like a Savior Complex thing Koby? You see her alone, and you feel like you need to do something."

"I just want to be her friend."

"Does she want you to be yours?"

The answer to that question was no, but Koby wasn't ready to accept that answer.

"I don't know." Was what he ended up saying.

"Well for your sake I hope you find out soon. It's no use stressing over one gloomy person who wants to be left alone."

"Okay." Koby tried to go to sleep. But all night all he thought about was you saying you didn't want friends. More specifically him...

~Reader's POV~

Waking up at 5am you decided to run 100 laps before opening the infirmary. It was a lot easier than the 200 that Garp had made you run. He recently started to up it to 300, claiming you were young and had good lungs. You hated exercising but it was required on Garp's ship, and it was an order and you prided yourself in always following orders.

"Y/N-San? You're here early." Dammit why...why is he here this early!

"Mornin'." You said as you passed by and let jogging. 15 down 85 to go. If you were lucky he'd do a different exercise and you could run in peace.

"Mind if I join you? I always seem to run easier when I have someone to talk to. And no one else wakes up as early as me."

"Whatever." You sped up wanting to get the run over and done with so you could get away from him.

"Hehehe thank you." He didn't say anything else after that and just ran next to you. Even overtaking you after a few laps. Than after 8 minutes he'd caught up to your number of laps. Than after 15 minutes he was at 40 laps when you just reached 25.

What did he do to get that quick? Whatever...

You kept running at your pace and after 90 minutes you finally finished your 100 laps. You weren't so out of breath like when you first started but you were still fairly winded. Captain Koby was still jogging you took this opportunity to go back to short before getting your day started.

~Garp's POV~

"How's semi retirement treating you Sengoku?"

"Hahaha I forgot how much I missed training the younger generation. They're so full of life and vigor. Makes me jealous sometimes."

"Hahaha right? I miss those good ole days. Things were simpler then."

"You mean when we were in the dark about everything?"

"Yeah." Both old men grew silent thinking about what they knew and knowing they would need to pass the information down to the next generation, the trouble was finding who to trust.

"So I heard you got the gloomy doctor. How's that working out?" Garp chuckled.

"We'll I have her training with the other soldiers and recruits."

"Why the hell would you do that Garp?! She's a medic!!! Not a fighter!"

"She has the potential for both, I've seen it. She's not the most physically strong woman, but she's smart resourceful and can read people really well. Most of the complaints I get about her are that she's incredibly blunt. But for a medic that's a good thing, for a lonely soul who needs friends...not so much."

"She's been in the Navy for some time now and she is quite the introvert. Which is why it's confusing they sent her to you."

Garp laughed, a full on belly laugh. He couldn't help it.

"Cause no one else would take her. I felt it would be a waste to let such a talented young lady go for stupid reasons so for now she'll be under my command until further notice. Maybe the rascals I have here will help her come out of her she'll."

"Oh yeah, Koby, Grount and Helmeppo right? She's doomed."

"Hahahaha that she is. But one day she'll understand the value of friends."

"Hopefully not in the same way we had to..."

"Yeah...hopefully not."

~Reader's POV~

"You're wrist is broken. The cast needs to stay in for about 5 weeks, than we'll go down another grade level. That'll be on for another 3 weeks, after that you'll need physical therapy. If all goes as planned and you don't over exert yourself you'll be back on duty in three months. Here's your pain meds, take them before you go to bed after dinner. I'll see you in 5 weeks."

"Yeah sure." The young female soldier took the meds and instructions on how to keep her cast dry and started for the door. You turned to your paperwork when you heard her voice again.

"Ooooh Grount! When did you get back?" Ugh go flirt somewhere else!

"Just now, need to get checked out by the doc. Move. Hey you!" You turned to see a kid probably no older than you, with a funky rooster type hairstyle, scar on his cheek, and some weird device on his arm. He had on regular civilian clothes, but he had what you assumed was his chart in his hand.

"All-Hunt Grount correct?"

"Yeah that's me."

"Alright please go behind the curtain we'll do a full physical. Then we'll get you out of here."

"Could you be a little less monotone! I mean really!" Was she seriously still here?

"I don't care see you in a sec doc. Am I going to have to strip?"

"Yes." You stared at her. "You need fo leave."

"You can't tell me what to do you freak!"

Any other time in your past that phrase would've hurt your feelings, now you were so numb to it you didn't feel the old anger rise up.

"But I can. Beat it!" She looked as though she would cry. But walked out, after she did All-Hunt went behind the curtain and stripped. You waited for him to say he was ready and did the physical.

"You're in perfect health."

"Thanks doc. Here." He handed you his folder, you found it to be pretty thick for someone who was only
15.

"Thank you, have a good night."

"Yeah later." And just like that he walked out.

Interesting guy now let's see what his folder says.

Interesting wasn't even the right word after reading his whole chart two words came to mind. Loose. Canon.

Why do I get the feeling this bay is about to get busier?!

If only you had known what type of ship this was before your transfer...you would've just quit.
