Chapter 37: Nightmare of a life

1 week had passed and your heart grew heavier each day that passed and you'd never felt more alone. The shadow in exchange for allowing all of you to live, and leave was to make everyone who had come to the island with you forget you.

You still remember everything, even though you wished you could forget. You wished for darkness to swallow you whole. But you couldn't. Even though everyone there had forgotten you, you were very much remembered by everyone here at headquarters. When Grount had been told what had happened he'd come to your room and hugged you tightly.

"I'm sorry Y/N! I'm so sorry! What can I do? Please tell me! How can I help you?"

His voice had been desperate, upset and angry. Angry at what you weren't entirely too sure. You let him hug you though, and you hugged him back.

"You're already doing it and that's enough."

Grount had shaken his head but said nothing more.

Currently you were sneaking into Koby's and Helmeppo's bunk. They'd been attending required psychiatry visits along with everyone else who had been apart of the mission. While they were there, you were gathering all evidence of your relationship with Koby. He would just be confused as to why he had photos and gifts from a girlfriend...that he no longer remembered.

That was the worst of it. Even worse than Saphi's death, your lover and friend forgetting you altogether. Meeting you, talking to you, defending and protecting you, falling in love with you, making love to you, talking with you. All of it. He'd forgotten all of it. And there was no way for him to regain his memories. The shadow had said it had to be a life long thing for it to spare the lives of everyone.

Once you placed everything in a box, you used your observation haki to check for anyone coming, when you sensed no one, you quickly ran and went into your room. You were to be back to duty in a couple of days, but you had a meeting with the Fleet Admiral before that. You quickly dressed in your formal attire, put on your best neutral face, and walked to his office. Yoru, quickly flying to your shoulder. You eyed him, and wanted to cry all over again. Like you silently had that night when Koby had treated you like he did when he met a stranger in need of help. Friendly and professional.

"Miss! Miss! Are you okay? Quick! We need a medic." He cradled you in his arms and your heart clenched. He did a quick check of your body and winced when he saw your bruised rib cage. "What or who attacked you?"

"Please, go see to Saphi! She's dead!"

"Captain Saphi? How do you know her? What do you mean she's dead?"

"She protected me...cough cough!" You started to cough up blood, and the pain was immense! He cradled you closer, and you wanted to cry because he wasn't holding you like a lover, but a concerned marine looking over an injured civilian.

"Miss are you one of the people here we were sent to rescue."

"My name is L/N Y/N. I am a doctor for the marines. I am also a soldier rank Major General, my military ID is A-S-4-3-7-9-1-Z. I was sent here with you."

His frown grew deeper, and he began to carry you to the warship. While everyone else attended to Saphi.

When you both arrived at the ship, he took you to your infirmary. When you began to call out instructions to him he seemed to be in a daze, but still did as you said. After giving yourself some quick first aid, you sat back on your bed and let your head hit the boards.

"Miss. I'm sorry but I am having a hard time believing you about who you are."

"Call Vice Admiral Garp if you don't believe me."

You were exhausted and just wanted to sleep and maybe wake up from this nightmare although you knew you wouldn't. Koby got right to the phone call, when Garp answered he thought you were all playing a joke on him. When you assured him of the truth, he grew silent. The Hero of the Marines known for being loud, obnoxious, crazy, reckless, and dangerous was quiet.

Koby let you sleep and left you alone for most of the voyage back, only checking on you when he absolutely needed to. When before, he would be the one to make sure you had everything you needed and wanted.

I need to get a grip. He'll never do that for me ever again.

Hibari had surprisingly been kind to you. I guess since Koby wasn't acting all friendly with you, she simply saw you as someone who was of higher rank than her and she was incredibly respectful.

Arriving to port, the Giants tended to Saphi's body, and you were taken to the hospital to get checked out. The entire journey and the few days after Yoru had remained silent. Feeling guilty.

<Present time>

When you walked to the door, you saw Vice Admiral T Bone, you learned his name was gave you a sympathetic look and announced your arrival. When you were let in you saluted.

"Dr. L/N reporting Fleet Admiral sir."

"Thank you for coming on short notice Dr. I can't imagine that this has been an easy time for you."

"Saphi's death will be one I never forgive myself for."

You didn't bother to mention your fellow crew members memory losses, no need to let others know how much pain you were really in. Akainu stared at you, no pity in his eyes, no empathy nothing.

"Do you think you'll be able to return to duty soon?"

"I can return now if you need me sir. I was merely meeting the psychiatrist's requirements of leave. But I can return to duty at any time."

Your voice monotone, no longer filled with any emotion. Your eyes probably resembled that of a dead fish, but you didn't move your eyes away from the man in front of you. It was then that he smiled, seemingly happy with your response.

"Very well report back tomorrow. I'll give you your new orders then. You're dismissed."

You saluted again and went to walk out, feeling someone there you side stepped so you didn't run into them. You saw it was Ryokugyu and wanted to sucker punch him.

"Apologies sir."

"Why are you still alive?" You heard mutter underneath his breath.

"Haven't you heard? I'm the ghost doctor, I'm already dead."

He gave you a disgusted look before you walked away. Not caring if you were rude or followed proper etiquette.

"Dr. L/N!"

Your heart shattered.

That's not what you're supposed to call me!

"Dr. L/N wait! Are you alright? I heard that you were called to the Fleet Admiral office."

"I was. I'm going back to duty tomorrow."

"Isn't that too soon."

"I wasn't one of the people who lost their memory. And my injuries were minor."

His face turned, he frowned obviously upset.

"Vice Admiral Garp said that we were good friends the past couple of years. I'm, I'm so sorry that I forgot you Dr."

Your heart was breaking all over again. Every time he called you Dr. it was like a stab to your very soul with a jagged blade.

"I do not blame you Captain. Or anyone else."

"Still..." he placed one hand on his hip, the other scratching the back of his head, meaning he was trying to figure out a solution to the problem he didn't cause.

"It's alright Captain. Please don't stress about it."

"How can I not? I feel terrible."

"You're not going to be able to be around him much longer. Remember what the shadow said?"

"I know Yoru, I'll request it tomorrow. Maybe being away from him will help end this nightmare."

"Maybe. I'll always be with you, you know that right?"

The rest of the walk was filled with Koby's chatter. He was trying his hardest to fill in the holes in his memory, but nothing was going to work. The thought making you want to scream and cry.

I'm going to miss you Koby. Even if you can remember, I love you more than anyone!
