Chapter 13: Meetings, Constructions, and Realizations

After Captain Koby fainted in your arms, Helmeppo was the one who came to help you carry him back to the ship. What that pirate said still bugged you.

I doubt I would belong with a pirate crew any more than I do where I am. The problem isn't with the Navy or my fellow marines it's me who is the issue.

You didn't give yourself a whole lot of time to dwell on it though. The sooner you got him to the boat, the sooner you could start treatment. It was going to be a long next few days. Not only was he going to be a top priority patient, but you had thousands upon thousands of other people that you would need to keep track of for the next few days until HQ sent more people to help with damage control.

"Is he going to be okay Y/ N?" Helmeppo was worried you could tell, it was in the way he spoke and walked. He tried to hide his emotions by keeping the talking to a minimum something he didn't usually do, and he was staring straight ahead of himself.

"I'll know more once I am able t do a more thorough exam, by from what I can see, he'll be okay." Helmeppo visibly relaxed. "The sooner we get him to a stable environment the more I'll know."

You could feel yourself panicking and that was never a good thing. As a medic, you needed to remain calm amongst the chaos. When Captain Koby appeared in front of you to keep you from the Warlord, your heart had skipped a beat out of relief that he was okay. But the fact that he fainted so soon after helping you had you worried.

"Hey Y/N...I know tho might not be any of my business or noting and you probably don't even care but, I think Koby likes you...and I don't know what you went through in the past but he isn't like anyone you've ever met. So I guess what I'm saying is...give him a chance."

You didn't say anything, your only focus had to be on getting Captain Koby to a bed and starting treatment.

You're right...he isn't like anyone I've ever met."

-3 days later-

"What do we do about all the damage here?"
"No one died thank goodness but these people have to homes to return to."

I'd been 3 days of meetings. Since you were one of the higher ranking medics you were required to attend, but these meetings had nothing to do with the physical well-being of the civilians it was all about how to get their lives back on track.

Homes, businesses, schools, fisherman boats, you'd lost track of just how many different types of construction projects were going to be needed, and the budget to fix everything changed daily. It left you with a migraine just trying to remember everything.

"L/N, how are the civilian's mental health?" You turned to Vice Admiral Momonga who brought all attention to you.

"They'll need therapy but I don't believe there will.be much PTSD."

"Why's that?"

"No one died." You simply put. "Captain Koby made sure of that." You added that part a little more quietly, but loud enough to be heard by the rest of the table.

"How is he?"

"He's still unconscious but his vitals are steady."

Everyone at the meeting table grew quiet and frowned. You knew Captain Koby had been well-liked before but this just cemented that fact. You didn't want to alarm anyone but you were starting to worry about him and if he would ever wake up.

"We should get people places to eat and sleep first. Maybe apartment buildings would be best. But we should first make sure all the children are reunited with their families and that the orphans from the group homestay with the Sisters." You said your suggestion and then let your mind wander to the boy with pink hair.

You couldn't believe that such a young man was capable of such an act of heroism. Not only had he made sure no one was left behind, but he also made sure to send the most gravely injured to you cause he believed in you, even after the horrid things that you had said about him.

I am such a bitch...even if he still wanted to be my friend...I don't deserve him or anyone.

You're nothing but a means to an end.
All you are good for is your job.
No human, Fishman, Giant, or any lining being will ever be your friend.

"L/N!!" You were startled by Garp calling your name. "The meeting is over...are you alright?"

"I'm fine." You quickly rose to your feet and left the room before anyone else without offering any goodbyes."

"How rude! That child could use some etiquette lessons! Garp, you should send her to Momonga." Strawberry yelled out, making the table wince at the volume.

"Nah I think I'll keep her on my ship. She's come so far I don't want to see her get dragged down again."

"But still...her tone and attitude are atrocious. She needs to fix it."

"Really? I happen to think she's fine just the way she is." With that Garp also turned to leave Momonga followed him out.

"You're worried about the boy aren't you Garp-san?"

"Yeah...he should've woken up by now."

"Maybe he just needs a little more rest, he'll wake up that brat is tough. Hahaha."

"Yeah he is...guess I'll have to trust my cute little medic."

"She's a character for sure."

Back in the medical office, you went straight to Captain Koby to check for any changes and nothing.

"Why won't you wake up? Dammit...you need to open your eyes, you're making people worry about you."

Nothing happened. His machines just kept beeping, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. You'd taken him off oxygen yesterday and he was breathing normally he just wasn't waking up and it was driving you insane!

"Please...I need to say I'm sorry. I didn't mean what I said to you before I'm...I'm a coward. A broken coward. So please Captain Koby...please wake up."

You felt tears burning your eyes but refused to let them fall. Before someone caught you there for too long, you went to check on the other patients and update the charts that they would need for the next few months.

-Next Day-

It was utter chaos again, the first order of business was to get all the families together again on the same boat the plan was to have it done within two days but with how long it took to get a group of 20 to the right location was long and tiring.

"L/N!!!!" You saw Grount walking towards you, you also noticed that he was using your surname instead of your first.

"Hey."

"Hey, how's the process going?"

"Slow. We should do more than one group at a time. We're having an issue with the parents staying where they should. They're all worried about their kids and want to go be able to see them as soon as possible."

"Makes sense. No change with Koby?"

"None."

"You worried?"

Yes.

"No. He'll pull through. He'd just used up too much haki. He needs calories and rest."

"Whatever you say L/N."

There it was again your last name. It felt like a splitter digging deeper and deeper into your fingers. Not a very good feeling at all.

"See ya Grount."

"Yeah see ya."

You walked off to find Garp and tell him your idea if they wanted to start construction on the port tomorrow they needed a better system.

---2 days later---

"We need more lumber!!!"
"Yeah so do we jackass!!!"
"Call me jackass one more time!!"

The Giant squad had arrived yesterday to help with the big projects. The only problem was they were fighting every 2 minutes and through no fault of their own, they were extremely boisterous.

All the families were reunited with each other, and you'd scheduled therapy appointments for every citizen. Luckily HQ sent over 50 of them and they would stay here for a year.

The Giant had laid down the foundations for the schools and apartments. They were working on the library, hospital, and town hall right now. After that, it was up to the remaining soldiers to get all the detailed work done.

You drank from your teacup and sat back in your chair, trying to enjoy the peace that was now surrounding you but you couldn't. A major distraction was in the next room over and he still, after a week hadn't woken up.

You heard the door open and judging by the footsteps you'd guess that it was Helmeppo coming to check on his friend again.

"Y/N!!!! HE'S AWAKE!!!"

"What?"

You rushed out t find that the Captain was indeed awake. And for a moment your mind went blank, you simply stood there staring at him. Unable to process the fact that he indeed opened his eyes and that he was smiling.

"I'M GOING TO TELL EVERYONE THAT HE'S AWAKE HURRY AND DO HIS PHYSICAL DOC!!!" And just like a wind, Helmeppo ran out the door leaving you and the Captain alone.

"How're you doing Y/N-san?"

Huh???

"I think I should be asking you that question."

"Sorry listening to the chaos while I was unconscious, I wondered how you were handling everything." He smiled at you, a tired smile on his handsome face. But wait what?

"You heard the chaos?? You mean?"

"I was aware of everything going on while I was out. Who visited me, who had been in the room with me...and who had spoken to me. I remember everything."

That has to be the second awakening in his observation haki. I don't remember it being that fine-tuned. Wait...

"You remember who spoke to you???" Did that mean he heard your apology while his eyes had been closed?

As if he was answering the question you'd asked yourself in your thoughts, he reached towards you and touched your cheek causing a blush to form.

"I missed seeing you Y/N-San."

His words were so sweet and sincere you had to pull away from his warm finger tips. That tired smile still on his face.

"I'm hungry Y/N-San."

"Huh? Wha-oh right...Uh I'll make a call down to the kitchens. Anything in particular you want?"

"Would you be willing to make your rice malt?"

That's what he wants after a week of being unconscious??

"Uh yeah..."

It got quiet. You sat down on his bed and grabbed his hand looking down at your feet scared to stare at his face.

"I'm glad you're awake." You whispered. "And I'm sorry about what I said when I walked off. I was lashing out and I shouldn't have."
You felt him squeeze your fingers.

"Forgiven and Forgotten. Thank you for apologizing."

You smiled and was about to say something else when you heard several feet rushing to the door so you quickly got up and made way for the other visitors.

"I'll make you the rice malt. You're going to need lots of calories and I authorize light walks. Be back in a little while." You went into your living area when you heard everyone come in to check on Captain Koby.

"Koby!!! My boy you finally woke up!!! I brought some rice crackers and green tea. We gotta get your calories going!"
"Here's some fruit!"
"I had the kitchen make you a sandwich."
"Here's a protein shake."

Your heart was still beating a million miles a minute, the way he smiled, spoke, and touched you is how you imagined a man would do to his lover. You looked in the mirror and sure enough, you looked like an octopus.

"Hey, Doc! Get out here and check on the patient!"

"Vice-Admiral Garp, Y/N-san already gave me a physical. She said I need to just lightly walk around and eat lots of food."

Hearing his voice had your heart beating even faster you weren't even aware that was possible.

"Oh no! No no no no no no no no!!!!"

I am in love with Captain Koby!! How did that happen???!!
