Chapter 1: Meeting Koby

You were getting transferred again. Ever since you'd been drafted by the Navy, and went past basic training 1 year ago it seemed like every month or so you were transferred to a new unit. You hated it, but you went where you were needed. You also knew your attitude and the way you carried yourself had something to do with it. You made people uncomfortable. You wore your uniform like you were supposed to, all you added to it was a simple black hat that covered your e/c eyes, and kept your h/l, h/c out of your face. The ponytail helped too, but you didn't like people being able to read you. Another reason you made people uncomfortable.

Whatever, I just need to do my job and get shit done then go about my merry way, read books, draw and sit by the ocean.

You entered the Marines a month before the Paramount War, before that you were in the marine medical program where you stayed for the majority of your first year; you were there at the war on standby being a medic and all that you rarely ever fought unless you had to, and that was one of the days where you had to. But you were still required to be a good distance away, a dead medic wasn't very useful after all.

You remember someone yelling, you didn't see them but you heard every word that he said. And it spoke to your very soul.

"That's Enough!! Stop, already! All this fighting just end it!! WE'RE TROWING PEOPLE'S LIVES AWAY! Even though every single soldier has a family waiting for them to return! Even though we accomplished our goal! We keep chasing pirates who don't want to fight, drawing out a battle that should already be over...and abandoning soldiers who could be saved if we treat their wounds now! And still, we're sacrificing even more people! What about the soldiers who will fall after this? We're making them look like idiots!!!"

You could hear the tears in his voice and the heartbreak he felt. The next thing you knew Red Hair Shanks came and put an end to the war. Why he decided to come you have no idea. All you knew is that you and the other medics were called to get the injured treated and find your dead.

Now 6 months later you were still a medic but you kept getting transferred to different ships. You studied human behavior along with your medical training, and you used that knowledge to your advantage when you were called to fight.

You were quick in your decision making, you made sure your kills were quick and painless-for the most part-and your training in human behavior helped you to figure out when you needed back up and when you could handle a fight all on your own.

You didn't have any special abilities. No devil fruit, and no Haki of any kind. You were a normal 15 year old girl, who wanted to be a doctor and the only way you an orphan could do that was to be a marine for 10 years. But thinking about it now, you'd probably always be needed in the Navy.

Walking up to your commanding officer's door you knocked and waited for permission to enter. Once given you stepped inside saluted and waited to hear the same speech you'd heard so many different times from different people.

"You do good work, and you are great in the infirmary and in the field. But the men and women on board don't feel comfortable around you and have asked for your transfer. And after some observation I believe it is for the best."

"Yessir."

"You're being transferred to Garp's unit. There are more soldiers closer to your age, hopefully that'll help with your attitude and behaviors that are causing you so many transfers."

"Yessir."

His eyebrow twitched, his hand clenched in a fist and his jaw tightened. He was annoyed. You weren't doing anything you didn't normally do. You did your work than you just wanted to be left alone. You didn't bother anyone and you ate in silence. He seemed to be also relieved to have you gone. And judging by the slight smirk he was probably betting on Garp punching you due to what everyone seemed to consider "questionable behavior."

You were excused, packed your belongings and headed out. Garp's ship was already at the base, you figured it was better to get the introduction over and done with and walk around to familiarize yourself with the people you would be serving with, and look at everyone's medical files so you knew how to treat everyone who would come to you injured. You also had a photographic memory, after reading something once you memorized it and never forgot it.

—In Garp's Office—

The old man was actually sleeping. Snoring with a half drank cup of green tea and an empty bag of rice crackers on his desk. A snot bubble getting bigger and smaller with each breath that he took. You were let in and had been standing there for about 10 minutes. You didn't want to wake him up.

He'd probably sucker punch me for startling him and then I'd be the one in the infirmary for accidental blunt force trama. How sad would that be?

You were about to leave and wait outside, as you placed your hand on the doorknob you heard a set of fast paced steps, realizing they were about to run into this office you stepped back and sat down on the sofa and waited.

"Garp-San there you are! We have a new medic coming you need to wake up and accept the transfers!!" A young pink haired boy cane bursting in yelling and frantically waving his arms, Monkey D. Garp came to and just as you thought lashed out with his fist and sent the pinkette flying out of the office through the door.

"Who the hell woke me up?!" His eyes manic and searching landed on you and then his whole demeanor changed from annoyed to curious. "Oh who might you Lass? I haven't seen you here before."

"The new medic." You stood and handed him your file and stood there and waited.

"Oh so you're the hot new girl on the scene huh?"

"No." He didn't seemed bothered by your bluntness and just kept reading.

"Let's see...hmmm. No write ups, no complaints about your work ethic and you've assisted with interrogations before. Interesting. Says here that you've been transferred...140 times?"

His eyes appeared to pop out of his head. Most people either request a transfer or it's requested from  another commanding officer. All your transfers were forced. You didn't ask for them and they weren't requested, they said you were to be transferred and you'd go without a fuss.

"And the reasons were...unable to get along with the other soldiers in your units...but I don't see any reports of fighting or causing them...care to fill in the blanks?"

"I do my job, I help people get better. I send them off and I keep to myself."

"I see...well I'll have Koby show you to the infirmary and where you can find everyone's medical records. We'll be setting sail to my main base to train new recruits. You have a couple of months to memorize everything."

"Yessir."

"Koby boy get your ass in here!"

"Ugh..." the same pinkette who was thrown through the door, came stumbling into the room with his hand on his head.

He saw you and gave you a smile.

"Hello my name is Koby! It's a pleasure to meet you." He extended his hand, and you shook it.

"L/N Y/N."

"Follow me Y/N-San."

You bowed your head to Garp and followed Koby. You walked a few paces behind him, you could see him look back and glance and you, his posture straight hands swaying at his sides. He was relaxed around you, you weren't used to that.

"So Y/N-San, you leave many of your friends behind? I bet they'll miss you. I heard you're a great trauma medic in the field you saved a lot of lives during the paramount war."

"I wasn't the only one there. It was many people that day who helped."

"Hehehe that it was, and yet you saved the most."

"I was motivated."

"Aren't you usually?"

"I heard the desperate speech of a marine saying we made the fallen soldiers looks like idiots if we didn't help. He inspired me to work a little harder, I never saw him but his desperation to help...I dunno I guess he just helped me save more people."

"Cough!" He seemed to choke on something. When you looked at him again his ears were bright red.

"Captain Koby are you alright?"

"Y-yes Y/N-San I'm alright just a little embarrassed I didn't realize what I said made any difference."

Oh so he's the one who said it.

"Well it did for me."

He led you to the infirmary after a quick goodbye you settled into your room adjacent to the main medical floor and then went to go eat.

Getting your food you looked around and realized Garp's subordinates were much rowdier than what you were used to. They paid you no mind though, so at least you'd be able to eat in peace.

"Y/N-San! How did you like your room? I've always been jealous of the medics quarters they're much nicer than a normal soldiers." Captain Koby sat across from you with a goofy grin on his face. It appears what you said made him think that he'd made a difference in your life.

Yeah not really just for that one day. It's going to be annoying if he does this everyday. Just nod and he'll leave.
You nodded your head and continued to eat.

"If you need anything just let me know. I'm on fairly good terms with everyone here, so if you need help getting to know people I'm here for you."

"I'll be okay. Thanks though."

"No problem!"

You'd met people like him before they tried for maybe a week, after that you were left alone.

A week after that he'll leave me alone.
