Chapter 1

While finishing up some reports, Detective Castiel Novak was called to the chief's office. As he made his way there, he wracked his brain trying to figured out the reason why the chief wanted to talk to him. Did he mess up a report? No, that can't be it, he always did his reports perfectly and on time. Was he in trouble? No, that can't be it either, he always follows the rules to the letter. Is he being promoted to Head Detective? Now, that made Castiel excited. Before entering the chief's office, Castiel stoics his expression.

"Ma'am? You wanted to see me?" Castiel asked.

"Ah, Detective Novak, sit down please." Chief Ellen Harvelle said, pointing to the chair in front of her desk.

Castiel does as told, sitting in the chair and waiting for the chief to tell him what she needed to tell him.

"I called you in here because we'll be having a new transfer from Kansas starting Monday and I wanted to let you know that he'll be your new partner." Ellen told Castiel.

"What's his name?" Castiel asked her.

"Dean Winchester." Ellen replied.

"May I ask why he's being transferred here?" Castiel asked curiously.

"Wow, you sure ask a lot of questions. Look, I don't want to say too much, because it's just plain rude to talk about other people's personal business. But all I'm gonna say is that he chose to transfer out of Kansas." Ellen explained.

"Any more questions?" she asked.

"No, ma'am. I'm looking forward to meeting my new partner." Castiel replied, standing up.

"Alright, then back to your desk." Ellen said, waving the detective away.

As he left her office, Ellen debated whether or not to inform Castiel that his new partner was...not as much of a stickler for the rules as he was. But then she figured that it would probably be good for Castiel to learn how to loosen up a bit...and maybe he could reign in Dean a little as well. Castiel's old partner had retired two weeks ago, so he was in need of another.

"I wonder what made him want to transfer here?" Castiel thought, turning in his reports.

Elsewhere, Detective Dean Winchester was settling into his new home. His adoptive father, Bobby, came with him to Missouri to help him move in.

"Well, Dean, all that's left for you to do is to hook up the wifi. Other than that, you're completely settled in here." Bobby said putting away the last of the groceries he and Dean just got.

"Thanks for helping me out, Bobby. You should tell Sammy to come visit when he has some free time." Dean said, handing Bobby a bottle of beer, then opening his own and taking a sip.

"Are you sure you're gonna be okay here by yourself?" Bobby asked.

"I'm a grown man, I'm fully capable of taking care of myself." Dean scoffed, rolling his eyes.

"I'm aware of that, ya idjit. But, considering some of the sh*t you've been through recently, I'm not sure I want you so far away from your friends and family." Bobby replied, folding his arms across his chest.

"I'm literally one state over, there's nothing for you to worry about." Dean groaned, throwing his head back in exasperation.

"Nothing for me to worry about!? You do remember that you almost f**king died last year, don't ya?" Bobby argued.

Dean clenches his jaw, something he often did when someone brought up something he did not want to talk about.

"Oh, believe me, I remember. Hehe, I probably remember it in way more vivid f**king detail than you and Sammy ever will." Dean chuckled darkly, using a smile to cover up how he truly felt.

Some...unpleasant things happened during a case that caused the detective to almost lose his life. Sure, he went to therapy - only enough of it to get cleared for duty - but once back at work, Dean still felt trapped and hopeless, so he figured a change of pace would do him some good. It was either that or grin and bear it until it eventually drove him insane.

"If you didn't want me coming here, why'd you help me move?" Dean asked, pouting and avoiding eye contact.

"Because I'm a good parent who supports his kid's decisions whether he agrees with it or not." Bobby replied, staring Dean down hard.

"Ohhhh, I know what your problem is. You're just scared that the baby bird's leaving the nest." Dean teased.

Bobby sighed internally, knowing Dean had the tendency to use humor and sarcasm as a way to escape conversations and situations he didn't want to deal with. And this time, he lets Dean get away with it because he didn't want to have a fight with him before he had to leave for Kansas. Also, there was some truth to that statement, he loved Dean and his little brother like they were his flesh and blood, so letting go was a bit hard.

"Don't forget to call, okay." Bobby told Dean, heading to his truck.

"I won't. Drive safe." Dean said, giving Bobby a quick hug.

Once Bobby's truck disappeared from view, Dean goes to head inside. He was just about to turn the knob on the front door when his neighbor, Charlie, whistled to get his attention.

"Hey, Dean! My girlfriend just ordered some pizzas, wanna come over and binge watch some Buffy?" Charlie called out from her porch.

Dean met Charlie the day he moved in, she even helped unload the u-haul truck. Being who he was, Dean tried to flirt with the cute nerdy red-head, but quickly realized she was both taken and gay when her girlfriend, Gena, came up and wrapped her arm around her waist and kissed her cheek. Regardless of that awkward interaction, Charlie and him became good friends. So, he locks his front door and heads over to Charlie's to hang out with the nice couple.

"Ha, and Bobby was worried about me being "alone". Jokes on him, because unlike Sammy, I know how to make new friends." Dean said under his breath.

While at Charlie's, Dean happily eats his pizza while swooning over both Buffy and Spike. Then Charlie bribes him with homemade cookies and a puppy-dog pout to join her and Gena's next D&D campaign.

"Fine, as long as my character can be a gun slinging cowboy, I'll play your nerd game." Dean agreed, smiling when Charlie cheered and clapped her hands excitedly.

"So, Dean, when do you start work?" Gena asked.

"I start Monday. My old boss, Chief Mills, she told me my new partner was gonna be some guy named, Castiel Novak." Dean answered.

"Oh, I know him a bit. He's a nice guy, really sweet with his niece, but can be kinda uptight sometimes." Charlie said.

Dean grimaced, he didn't get along well with uptight people, his reckless rule-bending nature always clashed with people like that. Hopefully, he doesn't have that stick too far up his a** and is open to a little care-freeness. He just hopes he'll be able to trust this guy to have his back.
