Chapter 1
"Congratulations," Jeon Jungkook's manager, Kim Namjoon, said as he threw an iPad towards his beloved client. "You're drinking, driving, smoking, leering, and groping all the same time."
With a tired groan, a bare-chested Jungkook rose from his bed, struck by the object that flew straight at his head, "What the hell man, it's 6 am in the morning!"
"It's exactly ten minutes to seven o'clock," Namjoon replied crankily as he glanced at the Rolex wrapped around his wrist. "In the evening."
Trying to squint past his dreadful hangover, Jungkook looked at the thick curtains hanging over the windows. "Goddammit."
"You also missed a photoshoot, a morning talk show and two radio interviews today," Namjoon's frown became deeper and deeper. "You weren't answering any of my calls all day and I swear to God, Jeon, I honestly expected to see a dead body once I arrived here. In a sense, that would have been better." He mumbled.
Jungkook ruffled his hair that now resembled a perfectly tangled mop.
"Ah well, it's already in the past. Let bygones be bygones."
A dark shadow cast over Namjoon's face. He leaned down to grab the iPad and threw it at Jungkook's face again.
"Read. It." He said through gritted teeth.
Battling away his hammering headache, Jungkook reached for the irritating piece of technology that had been shoved at his face. The words were still a little blurry, but he tried his best to focus better on them.
K-Entertainment Weekly: Now that's what we call a good time! National treasure and high-profile actor and performer Jeon Jungkook was caught steering the wheel with a drink in one hand and a gorgeous goddess in the other! Is this bad boy ever gonna get enough of the fun and the partying?
Underneath was a picture of Jungkook driving his beloved Ferrari with a drink in his hand and a cigarette between his lips while sneering at all speed limits.
"Welp," Jungkook commented while smacking his lips. "You have to admit, this is probably one of the coolest things I've ever done. Multitasking at its best."
"This is inexcusable." Namjoon shot him a stern look.
Jungkook returned the gesture with a slightly remorseful one.
"Okay... I guess it can be argued that this might be a little detrimental to my image."
"Might be?" Namjoon raised an eyebrow. "Jungkook, we have not received any offers for any roles in months. Not even in television. You're on your way to becoming unemployed."
"I am most definitely not!" Jungkook gasped dramatically. "I am just in between two-billion dollar paydays."
"So am I," Namjoon firmed. "Since I get a percentage of your payday. And I have twins and a wife who is used to a certain lifestyle. Let me tell you, Angelica has not been happy with me recently."
"What about that part I was about to get in that new movie by Bong Joon Ho?" Jungkook questioned hopefully, becoming anxious by Namjoon's struggles.
"He has not gotten back to us yet," Namjoon's lips pressed into a line. "Which means he won't confirm. Ever. Not with that out in the press." He pointed at the article.
Jungkook heaved a deep breath, now fully awake.
"So what do we do now?"
"We generate some positive PR," Namjoon announced, a tinge of excitement in his voice.
"What the fuck is that supposed to mean?"
"I'm just saying, we need to do something to remind South Korea and the rest of the world that you're this cute, adorable boy-next-door type of guy," Namjoon explained.
"Hey, hey, hey!" for what was worth, Jungkook's pride was hurt. "I am the boy next door. I mean, if you live in a pretty dysfunctional suburb I guess."
"There's no time for fooling around, Jeon," Namjoon adjusted his glasses. "Now cover those god-like chest and abs of yours because we have some work to do."

"I promise you, baby," the TV blared across the half-empty café as two girls, dressed in similar attires consisting of white button-up shirts and orange short skirts sat at the bar, swooning as they gazed upon the TV screen lovingly. "I know I cheated on you with your sister and your mother, and then left you at the altar while you were nine months pregnant, but somehow miraculously, I am a totally different person now. I love you and want to be with you forever even though I disappointed you a million times. Is there any chance for you to forgive me?"
"He's so dreamy!" one of the girls, a petite brunette with a pointy nose and cute freckles, sighed deeply.
"I'll forgive you on one condition." A female voice came from the TV as the camera panned to a sultry brunette dressed in a nurse uniform.
"Gee, I wonder if these two get together." The bartender, a tall, well-built brown-haired man with long almond-shaped eyes commented sarcastically as he scrubbed the inside of a glass.
"Shhhhhhht!" the other girl, with a short bob-cut and violet highlights, shot him a murderous glare.
"What is that, baby?" the movie went on as the camera moved to a gorgeous-looking man with soft brown locks cascading down his chiseled face. He was wearing a soldier's hat and his eyes were twinkling with affection.
"How in the world is this guy supposed to be back from war?" the bartender mumbled. "He doesn't have a single scratch on his face and he looks like he'd be too afraid to break a nail."
"I'm going to fucking kill you if you don't keep your mouth shut, Taehyung!" the second girl hissed at him like a venomous viper.
The boy whose name was apparently Taehyung, shook his head disapprovingly.
"Dance with me." the woman from the movie whispered. The girls sighed in unison as the ending credits started rolling down.
"So beautiful!" the first girl exclaimed, letting her hands fall heavily on the bar counter.
"Explain one thing to me," Taehyung grimaced as if he had tasted a lemon. "What kind of desperate and pathetic emotional cripple would actually buy that ending?"
"I WANT A MAN LIKE THAAAT!!" the second girl cried out, her shoulders wracked with the sobs that fled her incessantly.
"One that would cheat on you multiple times, abuse you and abandon you only to come back years later with a lame-ass excuse?" Taehyung was puzzled.
"That doesn't matter!" the first girl argued. "Everyone deserves a second chance and also, love conquers all!"
"Maddie," the second girl turned to her friend, completely ignoring Taehyung's eye-roll. "Do you think that in real life Jeon Jungkook is the man he seems to be on the screen? Pure, kind-hearted, soft-spoken and with a beautiful soul?"
"Absolutely!" Maddie exclaimed with tears in her eyes. "I mean, you just can't fake that kind of thing, Cleo!"
Cleo nodded rapidly, her hair bobbing up and down as she did so. She blinked away the tears and put a hand over her friend's thigh.
"What do you think Jeon Jungkook is doing right now?"
Maddie exhaled deeply.
"I bet he's in church. Praying for world peace."
"Jesus Christ." Taehyung facepalmed as he turned to walk away and remove himself from this cringe-worthy conversation.
"OH MY GOD!" Cleo's holler resonated through the air, loud enough to break the glass door. Taehyung came running back, his mind on full alert as his eyes scanned the tiny café only to see nothing was wrong.
He put his hands on his hips. "What was that about?"
"Look at that, look!" Cleo pointed a trembling finger to the smartphone in her other hand. "It says here you can win a date with Jeon Jungkook!"
"What?! Give me that!" Maddie screeched, shaky and wide-eyed as she grabbed the phone from the clamoring Cleo. "Holy shit! It really says that!"
"It's to benefit 'Save the children'!" Cleo explained excitedly. "You know that's Jungkook's favorite charity!"
"Oh my god, that is so like him!" Maddie was endeared, her eyebrows curling as she tucked her lower lip between her teeth.
"He's a literal angel!" Cleo gasped.
"You know that's just a PR strategy, don't you?" Taehyung murmured, clearly unimpressed.
"Awwwww!" the two girls aww'd simultaneously, making something twirl in Taehyung's stomach.
"Should I enter?" Maddie asked, her wide eyes jumping back and forth from the phone to her friend.
"Why not?" Cleo spoke slowly as she digested the idea.
"Sure," Taehyung commented darkly. "Heaven is just one tap on your phone screen away."
"You should totally enter!" Cleo encouraged, now bouncing up and down in her seat.
"It says here you have to submit 100$ in order to enter the competition," Maddie's smile fell. "Like a donation."
"We don't have that kind of money." Cleo's enthusiasm slightly dissipated as she was reminded money was tight in both girls' situations.
Simultaneously, they swung their heads to look at Taehyung, batting their lashes at him charmingly.
"Hey Taetae," Cleo said smoothly with a look of intrigue on her face. "Would you like to help Maddie here win a date with Jeon Jungkook and help save the children?"
Taehyung huffed, rolling his eyes for the millionth time that day.
"Like hell I would."
"Taetae!" Maddie exclaimed sweetly, jumping from the seat and waddling over behind the bar counter to stand next to him. "Please, please, please, pretty please?"
He sighed, a subtle rosy hue spilling over his cheeks as her lavender scent penetrated his senses.
"I'll return it to you as soon as I can," Maddie bargained.
Eventually he caved under the influence of her intoxicating charm, something he immediately hated himself for. "Okay," he said, handing her his credit card.
"Oh my god thank you so much Taetae, I love you!" she placed a soft peck to his cheeks, making something inside of him stir but he brushed it off.
"No biggie, I mean what are best friends for?" he mumbled so quietly she barely heard him.
The two girls scurried over to sit on one of the tables, giggling as they slumped over the phone. Their laughter became background noise as Taehyung observed them with a poker face, so immersed in how Maddie's soft ebony locks spilled down her shoulders he didn't hear Mr. Soo, the café's owner, approach him.
"Hey Taehyung." the older man placed a hand on the boy's shoulder, looking at him fondly.
"Hey Mr. Soo, didn't hear you come in."
"How are you, my boy?"
"Fine I guess. Same old, same old."
Mr. Soo made a pause as he stared down at his shoes. Taehyung turned to him with a quizzical look, confused by the weird silence.
"So," Mr. Soo started. "When do we lose you to Seoul University?"
Taehyung released a long sigh as he turned his face away.
"Don't get me wrong, son. We'd love nothing more than for you to stay here and continue developing our family business in this teeny, tiny town. Everybody knows you've been more than amazing at it. But I just feel like you're destined for greater things," the older man smiled warmly.
Taehyung scoffed a shy laugh, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Well, I, uh... I got my acceptance letter the other day."
"Well, that's just great!"
"And I got my student loan."
"Congrats!"
"So..." Taehyung trailed off. "There's just one more thing."
Mr. Soo offered him a questioning look, "What?"
"There's..." Taehyung wavered, suddenly stuttering. "Someone here I- I- I- need to have a discussion with, about, uh, going to Seoul with me."
"Oh..." Mr. Soo seemed a little bemused as he examined the younger man's face. All of a sudden, Taehyung couldn't meet his gaze. "Well I guess that's-"
"One extra large Cappuccino, please!" the sound of footsteps emerged from somewhere behind them as a melodic voice like wind chimes interrupted them. "Oh!" Maddie exclaimed softly once she saw Mr. Soo standing next to Taehyung. "I'm sorry, didn't mean to interrupt you. Sorry, sorry!" she apologized multiple times, walking backwards as she abandoned the backroom, tip-toeing carefully.
Taehyung lowered his face as a coy smile painted over his lips. He glanced over at the door again even though Maddie was long gone. Mr. Soo just nodded knowingly and patted him on the back.
"Well, good luck then, son. I think you're gonna need it."
Taehyung had no idea how to reply to that, but his heart was burning in his chest with feelings left unspoken.
