8. Make It Right
"What the hell were you doing?" Fabian says clutching Mara's arms. She was dangerously leaning over the balcony railing and Fabian was just in time.
"I...I was...just trying to....." She says catching her breath.
"Do you even know what lengths people are going to keep you safe? Especially your sister?" He says angrily.
"When did you become so close to her? Don't forget I was the one who agreed for you to keep working." She snaps.
"This has nothing to us being close. I just understand her better now."
Mara sits on the bench, defeated. She doesn't want to hate her sister but the events of that night still haunt her. Fabian sits beside her and consoles her.
"Why don't you talk to her...and ...I mean sort it out." Fabian starts.
"I can't. She killed mom. I was right there, she held...held the bat...with...that man...." She starts to sob. Fabian rubs her back.
"How old were you then?"
"I was 6 and Nina 13. We came back from New York because mom wanted us to know about our father. But we never...really...met him....I remember...when I was very small...we had gone to the amusement park. Nina said it was the best day of her life." She pauses, "But then, that night, mom was waiting for dad to come...It was raining like cats and dogs that day....but we still had hopes...."
"My mom got tired of waiting and went back to her room. But we both sat right there on the couch, didn't want to miss even a second. Suddenly, we heard a loud crash from her room, so Nina told me to sit there and she went to check. After several minutes, I heard another crash so I went to look...and I saw....."
"I saw mom lying on the floor, Nina with a bat in her hand, unconscious on the floor and a hooded man who ran after seeing me. That was it. I knew that she wouldn't have done it but later she proved it herself."
"How? How did you end up here?" Fabian asks.
"Patricia. She said she was a friend of our dad and she would help us. She took us to Italy and had us educated. But Nina always hated her, I don't know why. But that night, I understood...I understood..." she takes a deep breath, "We were living in a large house surrounded by Patricia's guards. She had come here for a monthly visit. It was just after midnight that Nina came to me, with blood on her hands and told me to come with her."
"Seeing the blood, I panicked and refused to go. But before I could ask her anything, the guards came in and dragged her out of there. I couldn't sleep a wink that night. I tried to go to her, but the guards refused to let me go."
"Later, early in the morning, Patricia comes to me and cries, hugging me. She said that Nina left me....injuring a guard. I couldn't believe my ears. Did she leave me here? That's impossible. She promised to always be with me. Patricia then told me that maybe it was the guilt of her killing mom and ....so she ...ran away.....and....and...."
"And you believed her? Over your own sister?" Fabian asks in a challenging tone.
"I had no other choice. Here was a woman who took us in and cared for us, loved us like our own mother. And then there was Nina, who abandoned me. She could have talked to me. I don't believe she killed mom or the guard but...but....she could have talked to me...I was her sister...her baby sister...."
"Have you ever tried to talk to her about that night? Maybe she wanted to tell you but couldn't, because she wanted to protect you? Have you ever considered that this all might be a huge misunderstanding and someone could be manipulating you?" He says hinting towards Patricia. This woman now seemed more suspicious to Fabian.
Mara keeps her silence to that. She never really did. She always followed what Patricia told her. Now is the time to know the actual truth.
"Can you help me Fabian? To talk to her?" she looks at him with puppy eyes.
"Yes. Of course. But you will be the one to do the talking. Promise?" he holds out his pinky finger.
"Pinky promise." She smiles.
"One more question." Fabian asks looking at the stars in the sky.
"What made you decide that you wanted me to be your personal bodyguard? Your sister was so against it."
"I don't know....it just felt right..." She smiles with her eyes. "I feel I can tell you things. I feel I can trust you. I have never really talked about that night to anyone. Not even Alphie. But I told you. With you beside me, I feel like I have to pour my heart out."
"I am glad that I can be that person for you Mara. You can always come to me when you have to talk. About anything."
Mara puts her head on his shoulder and Fabian doesn't pull away even though he felt uncomfortable. These sisters have gone through a lot and he felt a sense of duty to make things right.
He looks from the balcony and watches Nina, sitting in her room buried in her papers, her phone, and the computer.
Yes, I can make things right. I can help them. But how?
