19. The Interview

"How did Patricia agree to this?" Fabian asks, immediately regretting asking such a stupid question.

The 'Talk People Talk', a famous show on the television, had asked for an interview with the Martins, Patricia included. They will talk about the case reopening, their life before and after and other things.

"I think she is planning to gain sympathy from the public." Alphie says, running his hand through his hair, "Which also means she will try her best to sabotage the investigation."

"And we can't let her do that." Fabian says calmly. Nina was sitting beside him, completely silent. Last night's events were still circulating in her mind. She spent whole night sulking and thinking that she might have got it all wrong.

"I don't remember! I....I don't remember!" she shouts, startling everyone. Fabian, who knows what is going in her mind, looks at Mara with pleading eyes, begging her to tell the truth but she just looked at the ground, not meeting his eye. He sighs and holds Nina's hand.

"You remember everything. Don't doubt your memories now Nina. They will help you find the real culprit. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise." He side-eyes Mara and Nina looks at her, but she turns towards the kitchen.

"Am I missing something?" Alphie jokes around to make the mood light but seeing such a vague reaction, he decides to leave them both and talk to Mara. But another sight greeted him in the kitchen. Mara was curled up in the corner, hugging her knees and crying her eyes out, silently. Alphie hugs her and whispers comforting words in her ear. He is confused and thinks it is because of Jerome. But Mara clears his doubts by telling him everything.

"Which means Patricia lied again!" She did not technically lie. The brooch did belong to Jerome's men. She just presented it in a manner that would make anyone think that Jerome was the one who sent those men. But then, if not Patricia or Jerome, then who?

Mara stops Alphie from telling Nina anything, saying that she will be disturbed.

"But she is doubting her own memories! The actual truth! She is doubting that!" Alphie argues.

"It's better that she does that. It will make Patricia think that her plan is working. I have to continue this way so she leaves Nina alone. Also, it's a matter of a few days. Once the investigation starts, Nina will catch up." Mara sounds guilty of letting her sister go through it, but it's for her own good.

"So you are saying we should do this interview?"

"What other choice do we have? We need to let Patricia think she is winning." Mara gets up to look at Fabian holding Nina, who was just numb, just like last night.

Fabian couldn't take his eyes off of Nina. She was breathtaking! Even with a sullen look on her face, she looked more beautiful as ever. Was it that Fabian noticed this now or that mole under her lips was always there? Hey! Stop looking at her lips!

He goes over to pat her shoulder and gives her a warm smile, "Smile beautiful. Don't let Patricia think she has got to you." Nina blushes at his compliment and smiles a little. It feels good to smile for him. Fabian had to calm his heart as it was beating way too fast.

That smile! That damned smile!

Alphie and Mara both look at them longingly. Only one thought crosses their minds and they look at each other. Why don't these both get a room already?

They reach the venue and are ushered in the green room to touch up their makeup. Nina was still a little glum but having Fabian by her side was relieving. Within a few minutes, they were ready. As they were going over the interview questions, someone knocks on their door. It was Patricia.

She looked over at Nina and Fabian, sitting so close and Mara notices that. Patricia doesn't seem to like them close. Quick to access the situation, she called Fabian, "Hey Fabian, can you help me with this question?" She signals him to come beside her.

"I can help." Nina interrupts but Mara snaps at her, particularly showing Patricia, "I don't need your help." And goes back to her sheet. Fabian pats Nina's shoulder, mouthing 'All will be okay' and goes up to Mara. Patricia has a satisfied look on her face and tells Alphie to follow her as she exits the room.

"What was that for?" Fabian whispered, sounding a little pissed.

"Patricia saw you being close to Nina and she did not like it. I just made the situation normal." She says nonchalantly.

"What? Me being close? What do you mean? I wasn't...." Fabian stutters as his face turns red. He doesn't know why he was embarrassed. Sure Nina looked beautiful. Sure they were sitting close. But only because Nina has not been in her right mind lately. It doesn't mean he had something for her!

"Sure." Mara scoffs. She wanted to laugh looking at Fabian's red face but they were interrupted by a staff's voice.

"Five minutes guys. We are up in five minutes."

The interview began with some light questions like how was their life in New York, their education, their dreams, and their ambitions. It slowly turned towards the case.

"So we heard that the case is now being transferred to another investigative officer?" The interviewer asks.

"Yes. We thought the previous team had not done their work well so we have requested for a change of team from the court. We just have to wait for them to agree to it." Patricia says as she suppresses a smile. She already knew that the court will dismiss their appeal as it is a 10-year-old case. They would not employ a new team to such an old case and Tyler would be the one who will lead his old team as before. But Nina and Mara did not know that.

On the other hand, the girls were pretty much in shock to see Patricia openly being so supportive of the case. They knew it was for the camera but she was being so confident about the new team being appointed that it almost sounded as if she wasn't afraid. She wasn't afraid of the truth to come out.

"So are you finally happy? That the culprit will be caught?" the interviewer turns towards Mara and Nina. Nina flinches at that question and turns cold. Mara, observing it, jumps to intervene.

"Yes. We are happy that our mom will get justice."

The questions continue on. It was very evident that Patricia had staged this whole interview because after some time, all they did was to mention Patricia's involvement in this case, in the girl's lives. Not the real involvement of course. Not how she kept two sisters away from each other. Not how she was related to Juliana. Not how Jerome was related to Juliana. Mara had a hard time controlling her anger. It was usually Nina, but she was in her own world today. For the first time in her life, she had less to say. All Patricia would do was smirk when she looked at her helpless form.

The interview ended with a lot of greetings and as they were going to leave the venue, the girls were being swarmed by reporters. Again, Patricia had planned this well. They had to prepare for tomorrow's hearing at the court and Patricia deliberately arranged for all this interview drama so they wouldn't get time for it.

Fabian was the most worried about Nina. Mara was pretty confident in front of the camera but somehow, all of them suddenly wanted to ask more from Nina. He was now used to Patricia planning stuff like this but it seems Nina was not. He goes beside her and warns the reporters.

"Please, refrain from asking questions to Miss. Nina. She is not on her best health today." And he holds her by her waist to get her safely to the car. Nina clutched and dug her nails hard into Fabian's arms but Fabian couldn't care less. All he was focused on was getting her out of there.

Patricia remarked to Mara seeing this, "See, she always takes what is yours. You have to start fighting for it or....." Mara just ignored her and made her way through the reporters safely. She wasn't going to stand there, listening to Patricia spit poison about her sister, again!
