17. Timing

The next morning, the house is eerily silent.

"Miss Nina and Fabian have gone out." Amber replies looking at Mara's confused face.

This is my time!

"Oh. Okay then. I'll be in my room." Mara sprints back towards the stairs. She looks around her to make sure no one is looking and slowly opens Nina's door. She thought a lot last night and the only thing that popped in her mind was the 'culprit' who was locked inside the jail. And who knew where he was? Nina.

She carefully looks through the papers on her desk, "I guess Nina is trying very hard to prove that Patricia killed mom." She whispers looking at all her cut-outs. Nina seemed to have a lot of information on Patricia and the case but it wasn't enough. It wasn't enough to convince the investigative officer.

After going through a lot of papers, she finds contact information of IO – Tyler Mormon. She thought of first calling in to make sure but acted otherwise.

"If I call in and go, they might come to know about me. I have to hide well to extract information from them." Mara thinks and prepares herself to go to the police station.

She arrives there in no time with her face covered, difficult for anyone to recognize her. She asks the constable in the front, "Uh....excuse me...can I meet Mr. Tyler Mormon?"

"What is the nature of your visit?" the constable asks without looking up.

"I....I....have to talk to him...about a case...." Mara stutters a bit. The constable looks at her suspiciously.

"Ma'am he is an Investigative Officer. Unless you have an appointment with him, you can't meet him."

"Then...then can you give an appointment...Please, it's very urgent." She begs her. The constable sighs and pushes a big book towards her.

"Write your full name, address, case number, contact information, and your sign."

Mara finishes writing and pushes the book towards her.

"Your name is Nina? Just Nina? And the case details? No contact information? Ma'am, we can't set an appointment if we don't have your contact or the case details." The constable pushes the book back to her but Mara stops her and clutches her hand.

"Please just understand. It is a high profile case. I'll just need 5 minutes please." She begs.

The constable is now very suspicious so she asks Mara to wait in the lobby saying that Sir would be arriving in half an hour. She goes inside the back entrance and knocks on the door.

"Sir, there is a Nina waiting for you." She peeps in through the creak of the door.

"Oh not her again. Tell her that I am not in the office." Tyler says sighing. He already has so much work pending thanks to the little media fiasco. The higher-ups were pressuring him to reopen Julian's case but he can't. He can't show his own wrongdoings or go against Patricia. On top of it, he can't handle Nina shouting over his head.

"Er....Sir....this is another Nina....she has no details of the case she wants to look into and no contact information. Also, she is hiding her face. I told her to wait as you will be arriving in half an hour."

It was now suspicious for Tyler too. He asks her to show the lobby camera. The camera wasn't that clear but Tyler was already warned about it. He calls up Patricia.

"Ma'am I think she is finally here. Mara Martin. She put her name as Nina in the register. Okay, ma'am. Yes, don't worry we will halt her." He keeps the phone and looks at the constable.

"Tell her to wait. And after 15 minutes, tell her that I have canceled all my appointments for today and she has been given one for tomorrow. Make sure she leaves the station after hearing this. Don't be late. Exactly after 15 minutes." The constable nods and leaves the room.

After 15 minutes the constable relies on this message to Mara who seemed a bit disappointed but relieved that she did get an appointment.

"Okay then. I'll come tomorrow at 8.30 A.M. sharp." She says getting up.

Little did she know that she has stepped into a lion's den. As soon as she stepped out of the station, 5 men in black suits picked her up. One man closes her mouth with a chloroformed cloth and she felt her eyes becoming heavy. They carried her into a van. The last thing she remembers was these weren't Patricia's men.

Luckily enough, Fabian was in Williamson Castle when Patricia had got a call from Tyler. He couldn't understand but looking at Patricia's reaction, it was something that was against her plan. He later heard about men being sent over to the station. He knew Nina wasn't the one there. Then who?

He couldn't stand there any longer and goes towards the station. He was just in time to watch those men carrying a girl over their shoulders. Wait! That girl is Mara! He wanted to run towards the van and stop it but decides to follow it quietly. In the meantime, he calls up Nina to let her know but it was out of coverage area. He quickly sends in a message to Alphie.

"Quick Alphie, turn the tracking device on me. Mara has been kidnapped and I am following her. If you can contact Nina too, pass on this message."

The place looks like an abandoned school. There were benches and chairs lying around. Fabian hides behind the pillar, waiting for the right moment to attack. There weren't many men around and he could take them down easily, but with Mara being kidnapped, the task becomes risky. He watches them as they tie Mara to a chair. She was still unconscious.

Two guys were left behind to watch over Mara and the others went upstairs. Now was the time! Fabian quietly moves behind one of them and kicks him in the shin. He falls with a thud and Fabian cracks his neck. The other one warns him with a gun but Fabian was quick enough to catch and twist his hand, taking the gun into his hand.

He couldn't shoot the guy as it would alert the others so he knocked him with the base of the gun. He tiptoes towards the stairs, careful enough not to make any noise. There were lesser men in this place than there were in the van. Maybe they are patrolling outside and left only four to five men here thinking they wouldn't have to worry. One thought had been on his mind. These aren't Patricia's men. She wouldn't be so careless to hurt Mara. Or was he wrong about Patricia?

He reached the terrace and creaked opened the door, pointing the gun at them. The two men turned and were shocked to see him. They put their hands up as they did not have guns. But to Fabian's dismay, another man knocked him down from behind and he fell on the ground.

The last thing he remembers is seeing Nina running towards the men and kicking one down.

"Ughh...my head..." Fabian groans as he opens his eyes and clutches his head. He looks around and finds himself at a familiar place with a familiar face staring down at him.

"Are you okay now?" Nina asks, touching his bruised head. He doesn't flinch away but groans at the touch. "The doctor said the wound isn't deep. But you need rest." She assures him.

"Uh...where....where is Mara?" he sits up, looking around him. They were back at the villa.

"She is still unconscious but unhurt." Alphie says from across the room. Fabian takes a sigh of relief. Nina just looks at him with tears in her eyes.

"Thank you...thank you so much Fabian. If it weren't for you, we would have never known..." she was on the verge of tears. Fabian taps her shoulder.

"Hey, I promised to protect both of you, didn't I? My timing was nice. Also..." he looks at Alphie, "What was Mara doing there in the first place? The police station?"

Nina jerks her head up and looks at Alphie. "No! You don't mean she went there to meet Tyler?" Alphie asks, equally shocked.

"Who is Tyler again?" Fabian scratches his head. He is fed up with hearing new names every day.

"The investigative officer of mom's case. I went to him last time. But why would Mara go there?" her voice became small. Hurt and anger were evident in her eyes.

"Are you sure it was the station?" Alphie asks again. Fabian nods.

"Yes. I was at the castle when I overheard Patricia's conversation with someone. When I reached there, I saw her being picked up by some men. In broad daylight! I called Nina but it was unavailable and then texted Alphie."

"PATRICIA!" Nina stands up, fury in her eyes and storms towards the door but Alphie stops her.

"Nina stop!" it wasn't Alphie but Fabian who said that. "I don't think they were Patricia's men." He says looking deep in thought.

"What? How can you be sure? You heard about it from Patricia. You said men kidnapped her in broad daylight! Of course, it is Patricia. Only she has the power to do something like that. I knew it!" she turns to Alphie, "I knew that Tyler is connected to Patricia. I am sure when he saw Mara at the station, he must have informed Patricia."

"But....but they weren't Patricia's men." He takes out a small brooch out of his small pocket and hands it to Alphie, "I found this on one of the men. They all were wearing the same one. Does it seem familiar to you?"

Alphie examines it carefully. It was a half-moon brooch. "This does look familiar. But our brooch is that of a star." Alphie shows his own ornament to Nina. "Which means what Fabian said is true. They weren't Patricia's men."

"Also, if you think about it, she won't take the risk. She can't hurt Mara as long as Nina is here." Fabian points at Nina.

"Then you think she must have hired someone else?" her voice a bit calmer.

"No. That also isn't possible. She would not risk this thing getting public now that Mara is famous. Hiring someone else is more dangerous than sending her own men." Alphie says, looking intently at the brooch. This looks so familiar.

"Let's first find out to whom that belongs to." Fabian says pointing to the brooch. "Then we will plan it out."

It was around midnight when Fabian opened his eyes to the sound of his phone ringing. He tries to move but stops when he sees Nina's head on the bed, her hands entangled with his. He smiles sweetly and carefully gets up, making sure not to wake her up and goes out of the room to answer the call.

"Hello, Alphie. Did you find anything?"

"Is Nina around you?" Alphie asks in a hushed tone.

He looks at Nina and closes the door lightly. "No. She is sleeping. Why are you whispering?"

"So....I found out about the brooch." He hesitates before continuing, "I don't think you should tell this to Nina. It will hurt her."

"You are scaring me Alphie. Whose is it?" Fabian looks tensed. He was dreading what would Alphie say.

"It....I saw the same brooch in Patricia's office and....and when I asked her whose is it....she replied saying that it was the party's official brooch."

"She could be lying Alphie."

"I thought so too. Until I saw Mr. Jerome wearing the same one. I looked it up and it was true. It was their official brooch. That's why it looked so similar."

Fabian gasps in shock. "Mr. Je....Je....ro....." before he could complete the sentence, there was a bang behind him. He turns to look at Nina, wide-eyed, who completes his sentence.

"Dad?"
