|| Chapter 5 ||
OLD - REDOING
The remainder of the sun's rays glistened against the treetops. Orange, red, and yellow painted the sky, while long shadows were cast in MistClan's camp. The silence was fraught; holding disconsolate and sorrow.
Snowleap broke off his conversation with Thornkit. He glanced down at the two cat's bodies in the center of the Clan. Larkkit and Eaglefeather - once alive - were now to hunt with StarClan. Although the white pelted cat never visited his kits in the nursery, he still felt sorrow for his youngest son's death. Walking over to the grieving mother, he put his tail over her back. Rainfeather protectively pulled her remaining kits - Amberkit, Onekit, and Wrenkit - close to her stomach.
"I thought you'd visit them." Rainfeather whispered, voice hoarse, "But you never did. You never got to know Larkkit." It seemed as if it took all self control for her to not yowl out in anguish. She shifted to where her mate's tail was not rested upon her back any longer. "You would have made a great father. After the fire and the kits," she flicked her tail, "you completely changed. What happened to you?" The blue-gray she-cat shivered, "I can't keep up with this. Snowleap, I can't." As if the white cat were to speak, he opened his mouth, but then abruptly closed it. The she-cat closed her bright blue eyes. "I can't do this any longer. I can't be your mate anymore."
Many cats - who weren't meant to hear the supposedly hushed conversation - shifted their gaze to Snowleap. "O-oh. Alright then..." He sounded surprised, and although nobody payed attention to it, he looked as if his whole world shattered. She's right. I don't deserve a mate or kits. Walking away from her, he ignored all of the harsh looks he was getting.
As the leftover of the sun's rays vanished with the sky turning a dark shade of purple, the vigil began. Letting out a sigh, Snowleap looked to where Kestrelfall was, getting ready to speak to the Clan. "As you all already know," Kestrelfall paused for a few heartbeats, "we have lost both a warrior and kit. Eaglefeather was killed in a dog attack while protecting Branchkit, who is in the medicine den severely injured. Larkkit had been unwell since kitting. We will now share memories of our fallen Clanmates." Kestrelfall, who was perched on top of a slab of rock near his den, leapt down. The cats of MistClan gathered in an uneven circle around Eaglefeather and Larkkit's bodies. Snowleap joined them, and listened to memories they had to share about the two cats.
Fernshade spoke first, voice nearly failing her. "Eaglefeather...he never, I never..." The intense pressure from the gaze of the medicine cat lifted and locked her eyes with him; halting her disclosure. A sob escaped her throat. Giving a deep sigh, she spoke once more. "He never gave up when he joined our Clan all those moons ago....." The other cats nodded in agreement, while Rainfeather began to speak. "Larkkit always tried to be as strong as he could. He tried his best, and I'll miss him." Her voice ended in a whisper.
Snowleap barely payed any attention to the other cat's shared memories. As silence resumed itself, he stood to his paws, ready to speak. "Eaglefeather proved that he could be a great warrior many times before." He could feel the Clan's eye's burning into his pelt: some hostile, some confused. "I won't forget that he saved my life." Questioning looks from the younger cats filled the hollow. Snowleap stopped to look at Kestrelfall. The senior warriors glanced at him as well, but then looked back towards Snowleap. However, the white tom kept his focus on Kestrelfall. The King's green eyes quickly changed to one of pure hatred, yet Snowleap could see hidden fear. The white tom then looked back at the two dead cats.
"And Larkkit would have made a great warrior if StarClan had let him live." The cats expecting more from the father, yet nothing followed, dipped their heads in quiet agreement in respect to Larkkit. Looking towards the medicine den, Snowleap saw a weary, ruffled looking Stonefeather pad over to the cats. Clearing his throat, the gray tom spoke the words that medicine cats had spoken over the bodies of the dead for seasons upon seasons. "May StarClan light your paths, Larkkit and Eaglefeather." He took a heartbeat to regain his composure. "May you find good hunting, swift running, and shelter when you sleep."
After Stonefeather had spoken, Snowleap watched as Leafstreak, Foxleap, and Flameleaf carried them out of camp for burial. After the medicine cat left to go to the medicine den, Fernshade and her kits following, the other cats started to disperse as well. The white tom, who was slightly smaller than most of the warriors of MistClan, made his way to the den which all the Clan's finest hunters and fighters shared.
Again? Another cat rejecting me? How much longer can I last? He laid down in his nest towards the back of the warriors den. Nobody knew why he wouldn't visit his kits; then again, nobody really knew who he was. He never really got put into any border patrols or hunting parties and yet he never volunteered; a complete mystery to most cats - even to his former apprentice, Hawkblaze. However, one thing they all knew, which was as clear as water, was that he had a poor relationship with King Kestrelfall. Only the senior warriors knew why, but for the others, a complete enigma.
Short chapter today I guess! I update fast, don't I? *Rolls eyes* anywayyy I hope you enjoyed this chapter. I know I enjoyed writing it. Idk what it is, but I've been craving Snowleap. I bet none of you know who he really is. That is why he is our pov character! Yall should let me know if you want me to say who the next pov character will be. Cause I will in the discussion/comments/whatever that section is called. You can also vote. Just make sure you read the allegiances first. I'll say if I can or not (if I don't it's probably because they are just a strip of cardboard with an emotional range of a teaspoon who's only purpose is to just be there as the ultimate background character *coughs in Jaggedfur*).
This whole entire author's note feels like it came out of Starkit's Prophecy, only with somewhat okay-ish grammar. "I update fast, don't I?" I'm pretty sure that statement/question was in Starkit's Prophecy. Idk I'm just guessing. Welp, see you in the next chapter!
P.S. I'm currently writing one of the characters a Super Edition while writing this. I'll be publishing it after I finish the fanfiction!
