|| Chapter 11 ||

"Now, remember Lostpaw, you have to be a little bit faster. Other than that you're doing great so far! I am certain that you'll be a master at the leap-and-hold soon," Scorchedfur mewed encouragingly to her apprentice.

I hope so... "Alright, I'll go faster," Lostpaw sighed. He smoothed his fur down with a quick lick. Gazing at the other end of the training hollow, he saw Frondpaw speaking with his mentor.

At first, Lostpaw had been frightened to go to the location the dog attack had happened, but Scorchedfur and Stonefeather had convinced him that he was safe.

"Will we start the last round?" Antlerlight asked, looking towards Lostpaw and Scorchedfur.

Lostpaw saw his mentor nod. "Yep! It's dusk, and I'm sure our apprentices are in need of some rest." The silver-furred she-cat looked down at her apprentice. "You'll do great," she whispered.

Lostpaw smiled up at her, "Thanks." The dark brown tabby tom looked over at Frondpaw, who had stepped forward. Lostpaw moved closer to his gray-furred brother. I just have to go faster, and I can't let myself fail this time.

The brothers exchanged a nod before they both got into a crouch. Lostpaw kept his icy-blue gaze on Frondpaw's back. He started to circle around him, Frondpaw turning around to watch his brother's every move. The dark brown tabby knew he'd have to make his move soon, but didn't know how. His brother would easily be able to dodge out of the way if he were to spring now, so Lostpaw needed to find a different way.

Lostpaw suddenly ran in the other direction, hoping to distract Frondpaw while he zigzagged towards his side as fast as he could. About to pounce, Frondpaw was unable to dodge out of the way if he were to had tried. However, Lostpaw had lost his footing in the loose dirt.

The three-legged tom crashed to his side while Frondpaw did a victory lap around the training hollow. Once more, Lostpaw had failed. "Are you alright, Lostpaw?" Scorchedfur asked, trotting towards him.

He glared down at the ground after standing back up. Stupid dirt! I would have gotten him if I didn't fall! Lostpaw groaned, "If I didn't slip, I would have been able to pounce on him!" A warrior is able to attack an enemy! If I can't even do that when I'm practicing, then I'll never be able to be a warrior!

Frondpaw trotted up to his brother, Antlerlight following. "You did great, Lostpaw! I had trouble telling where you were going," Frondpaw mewed, green eyes gleaming.

"Yes, you did a good job, Lostpaw. Remember, this is all just training," Antlerlight said, gazing down at Lostpaw with yellow eyes filled with warmth.

"Thank you," Lostpaw sighed. Training or not, I need to learn how to fight properly.

"I think it's time we should be heading back to camp. It's gotten even darker." Scorchedfur gazed around, eyes landing on her apprentice. Antlerlight nodded, and with a swish of his tail, Lostpaw, Frondpaw, and Scorchedfur were following him.

Lostpaw's tail drooped as he trailed behind. Every single time he had either messed up or came close to when practicing. Scorchedfur slowed her pace, walking in sync with him. "Lostpaw, it's alright. It's all new to you. Soon enough, you'll be great at the leap-and-hold." Scorchedfur paused for a moment before continuing. "Did you think of that zigzag move yourself?"

The apprentice nodded, "I did."

"That was great thinking. If it wasn't for that annoying layer of dirt, you would have been able to get Frondpaw."

"Thanks, Scorchedfur." Lostpaw looked up at her.

"No problem, Lostpaw."

As they continued on their way to camp, Antlerlight suddenly raised his tail in alarm. He turned around and whispered, "I think I smell rogues."

Scorchedfur tasted the air, Lostpaw and Frondpaw doing the same. "You're right," the silver-furred warrior said.

Lostpaw glanced around. This can't be good. "Are we going to have to find them?" The apprentice's ice-blue eyes were narrowed in suspicion and concern.

"Yes," his mentor stated. She lead the group towards the scent, all cats staying low to the ground.

Lostpaw's eyes met with Frondpaw's, who shuffled towards him. "Do you think there's a lot of rogues?" He whispered, green eyes holding fear.

"I hope not-" Lostpaw was silenced when his mentor's tail came over his mouth. He looked forward, understanding why he was shushed.

Two rogues had their backs turned to the them. The scent of vole drifted towards the group, so Lostpaw knew that the cats wouldn't be able to smell him. "I'll catch it," said one just loud enough for the dark brown apprentice to hear. The other one remained silent, but Lostpaw saw the cat nod.

"I'll stop them. I'll signal if I need you to come out too." Scorchedfur stood up and trotted towards the two rogues. "I don't mean any harm," she started, "But, you are on MistClan territory."

Lostpaw watched as the rogues whipped around and got into defensive poses. "What is with you cats trying to take our prey?! We scented the vole first!" By hearing the cat's voice, the dark apprentice could tell that the rogue was a she-cat.

"This is MistClan territory," she repeated. "Any prey here belongs to my Clanmates and I. I can escort you to out of Clan territory, and you can hunt freely there." Scorchedfur quickly glanced over her shoulder.

Lostpaw looked over at Antlerlight, who watched the exchange with wariness. The brown tabby's ears perked up when he heard the rogue speak once more. "We're not going anywhere," she hissed, "We're not afraid to fight you!"

"I have a patrol consisting of three cats with me," Scorchedfur swished her tail. As Antlerlight stood up, Lostpaw and Frondpaw did as well. I really hope we don't have to fight. I can't fight...but I will if I have to!

As Antlerlight lead him and his brother to the rogues, Lostpaw stayed close to the warrior. He looked over at Frondpaw before gazing at the two unfamiliar she-cats.

The rogues growled, and Lostpaw could feel their intense gazes on him and the training patrol. In the short amount of time that Lostpaw had taken to look at his mentor, dirt had clouded his senses. "Ow!" He shook his head, eyes stinging.

"They're gone!" Lostpaw heard Scorchedfur hiss. Blinking through blurry vision, he could barely see that his mentor was rubbing her eyes. "We need to chase them out," she declared. "Follow me!"

"We should let the apprentices recover first, I don't think they can see well yet," Antlerlight said. Lostpaw sat down, and keeping his weight on his haunches, lifted up his left forepaw and rubbed at his eyes until his vision was clear enough.

"Alright, now we go. Stay close to me and be quiet," Scorchedfur ordered.

Lostpaw ran alongside the other cats, following the scent of one of the rogues. He heard thudding from the pine trees above him while pinecones were landing close to the patrol.

"One of them's in the trees." Scorchedfur abruptly stopped running. Lostpaw stopped as well and looked up. He couldn't see anybody, but it was obvious that one of the she-cats was up there.

As if summoned, a she-cat leapt out from the top of one of the pine trees. Not given a time to react, she landed right on top of Scorchedfur before running away.

Antlerlight rushed over to her. Lostpaw and Frondpaw followed, watching as she pushed herself up to her paws. "Are you okay?" Lostpaw asked. I hope she isn't injured!

"I'm alright," Scorchedfur stood up, "Now we really need to get to those rogues and chase them out of Clan territory."

"How about you stay here with the apprentices while I get the rogues? She landed right on your back," Antlerlight said, gazing at his aunt with worry.

"No, no, I'm fine. This will be a good training experience for the apprentices, so they should stay. I won't let any harm come to them." Scorchedfur's word was final, so with a nod from Antlerlight, the four cats were back on the she-cats' trail.

After a while of running and panting, Lostpaw's eyes widened when he saw not just two, but four she-cats gathered around a make-shift nest. "You can't bring that, we just have to go! Come on!" one of them exclaimed.

"Circle around them," Scorchedfur murmured. Lostpaw took a glance at his brother before following the older warriors and stationing himself on one side of the rogues.

"Oh, look who's come back! Want more of a fight? 'Cause we'll give you one!"

"You're causing trouble, Ivory."

"We'll leave if you want us too. We were going anyway."

"Ivory, Azalea, Olly, enough." An old and grizzled she-cat stepped forward. "Who is the leader of this group, and what is going on?"

Lostpaw watched as his mentor took a step towards the old cat, clearing her throat.

"I am the leader of this patrol. My name is Scorchedfur, and you are on MistClan territory. Rogues and kittypets are not allowed to hunt or be found here. Two of the she-cats here were found hunting on our territory, and when I offered peace towards them, they ran away and then one of them attacked us. We are not looking for a fight, and we will gladly escort you out of Clan territory where you can hunt freely."

The elderly cat dipped her head after a few heart-beats. "I am sorry. I didn't know that this was some sort of...territory." Lostpaw saw the she-cat pause as a pained expression reached her amber eyes. "We'll get going now..."

"Are you crazy?! We can't just leave! We need the prey!"

"We can find food elsewhere, Ivory!"

The dark brown apprentice gazed over at his mentor who was watching the she-cats through narrowed eyes. "You're hungry, aren't you?"

"Why does that matter," the she-cat who went by the name, 'Ivory', snarled, her cream-colored fur raised to hide how thin she was.

"No use in hiding it if they already know," said the old tortoiseshell once more. "Yes, we are. Prey has been so hard to find lately... We have to travel to find it, and tonight, we were passing through," she sighed.

Lostpaw looked at his mentor for direction, however, he swapped his gaze to Antlerlight when he started to speak. "The Code of the Stars states that we must help injured rogues or kittypets if found on MistClan territory. Though they aren't injured, they are quite hungry, and I think that there wouldn't be any harm in helping them... Do you agree, Scorchedfur?"

The rogues stayed quiet in anticipation, waiting for the silver-furred warrior to speak. After a few heart-beats, she bowed her head. "You are right, Antlerlight." She turned to the rogues. "As stated by our Clan law, we will be able to help you as long as you let us bring you back to our camp. We are run by a King, Queen, and Princess, and I am sure that they will be generous enough to let you stay until you are strong enough to travel again."

"Thank you very much. We all appreciate that." The elderly she-cat gave the she-cat, who Lostpaw assumed was Ivory, a warning glare.

Scorchedfur nodded towards Lostpaw, Antlerlight, and Frondpaw in turn, and they all stood next to each other. The old tortoiseshell gazed at the patrol - the three others following her amber gaze. "Oh, I am very sorry. It appears that we have not yet properly introduced ourselves. My name is Marley," she flicked her tail towards the she-cats behind her.

"Er- my name is Olly," said an orange-and-cream she-cat with blue eyes.

Next, a fluffy red tabby she-cat spoke. "I am Azalea...Azaleakit if you wanted my full name." A Clan name...but she's a rogue? Lostpaw looked at his brother, who also seemed very confused.

"I'm Ivorykit," grumbled a cream-furred she-cat.

Lostpaw looked over at Scorchedfur in confusion. The burned she-cat narrowed her eyes at the rogues, "Those are beautiful names... I think we should introduce ourselves as well. As I've said before, my name is Scorchedfur." The silver-furred warrior brushed Antlerlight with her tail, "This is Antlerlight." She looked down at her apprentice, "This is Lostpaw, and right next to Antlerlight is Frondpaw."

Antlerlight gazed at the she-cats with perplexity before sighing. "I think it is time for us to bring you back to MistClan camp."

Scorchedfur nodded, "Antlerlight and Frondpaw will lead you." She signaled with her tail for her nephew to go ahead of the rogues. "Lostpaw and I will stay behind you."

As the cats started to head back to camp, Lostpaw felt aware of the backward glances he was getting from the cat named Ivorykit. She was smirking at the fact that he was missing a limb. Lostpaw looked at the ground before swapping his icy-blue gaze to his mentor. "Scorchedfur," he started, keeping his voice low. "Why do two of them have Clan names?"

"I don't know," she sighed, "but once we are back to camp, maybe we'll learn why..."

. . . . .

Now back at MistClan camp, Lostpaw entered behind his mentor. He was aware of the many looks and questions, but he and the patrol ignored them. After gazing around camp, his eyes landed on his mother who was next to Stonefeather. Both cats were shocked, and Fernshade looked quite distressed. He then looked towards the rogues again, and saw Marley cock an eyebrow while gazing at Fernshade and Stonefeather. That's strange...

Lostpaw's attention then turned to the royal family who were exiting the den on top of the Pine Rock. They seemed to have just noticed the patrol - now larger and with unfamiliar cats. The King raised his tail to silence the cats in camp.

Lostpaw flicked and ear when he heard the sound of skidding and saw pebbles falling. Princess Poppykit was bounding down the rock to greet the returning patrol and newcomers. Then, Kestrelfall called out to the patrol. "Scorchedfur, I'd like to see you and the rest of your patrol right below the Pine Rock for questioning." Lostpaw watched as his mentor nodded, stepped up ahead, and lead he and the rest of the cats to the designated spot.

Once at the base of the Pine Rock, the dark brown tom gazed upwards as Poppykit noisily clambered back up it to stand beside her parents. Lostpaw sat beside his mentor while the rogues were in front of them. A crowd of his Clanmates gathered around them as Kestrelfall and Minnowflight stepped towards the edge. They were gazing down at the patrol - everybody was. Lostpaw kept his eyes focused in front of him, where Ivorykit sat.

The cream-furred rogue had started to poke fun at Azaleakit, and in less than a heart-beat, the two she-cats were caught in a scuffle. Before anybody could react, Marley hissed, "You unruly little bee-brains! Sit up and listen!"

As Scorchedfur leapt to her paws to knock one of them off of the other, the Queen's yowl sounded over the commotion. "Stop, or we'll send you away!"

The two she-cats shot into a sitting position and glued their eyes to their paws - but not before the cream-colored she-cat sent a glare upwards at the Pine Rock. Lostpaw blinked, confused about what had happened in all but a few seconds. Did... What? He looked at his mentor, who sat back down after shaking her head.

"Now that that is settled," Kestrelfall started, "I'll let you rogues off with a warning of never doing that again. There are absolutely no fights allowed here in MistClan camp...or any part of MistClan territory for that matter."

Lostpaw watched the rogues nod before changing his gaze back up to the Pine Rock. "Scorchedfur, where did you find these four she-cats?" asked King Kestrelfall.

"I found them on our territory trying to hunt; they have been without prey for a very long time," the silver-furred warrior mewed.

"Do you know their names?"

Scorchedfur responded to Kestrelfall's second question. "Yes. The tortoiseshell is Marley, and the orange one is Olly. The red one," she hesitated, "The red one is Azaleakit while the cream one is Ivorykit."

Gasps and murmurs filled camp. Lostpaw took a look at the cats around him, who all had surprised and questioning looks on their faces. I don't think any of them know why they have Clan names.

"I thought they were rogues," said Poppykit. "Why do they have kit names?"

Lostpaw watched as Ivorykit and Azaleakit twitched uncomfortably. "Pardon me, Scorchedfur, but did you say that their names were 'Ivorykit' and 'Azaleakit'? Not just 'Ivory' and 'Azalea'?" Queen Minnowflight looked very confused.

"Their names are Ivorykit and Azaleakit, though I don't know why, and neither does anybody else on the patrol..." As Scorchedfur said that, Lostpaw's eyes narrowed as he saw Marley glance back over at his mother and uncle. Do they know each other?

The King growled and mumbled, "Traitor..."

"One of the parents must be one of our Clanmates." The elder named Leafstreak spoke up, his amber glare fixed on the four new she-cats. "The question is who, though..." Lostpaw - and the rest of his Clan - watched the pink-tinted tom walk over to the oldest she-cat. "Your name's Marley, isn't it?"

"...Yes, my name is Marley," said the old tortoiseshell. Ivorykit and Azaleakit were making no noise, though Lostpaw could tell that the former was very annoyed. Lostpaw twitched his tail in apprehension, wondering where this was headed.

"Are you the mother of...Azaleakit and Ivorykit?"

"No... But I was the one who raised them." The grizzled she-cat was gazing directly at Leafstreak, not breaking eye contact.

"Where did you find them, and do any of the cats here look familiar?"

Marley hesitated, but kept her amber eyes on the elder. "A tom brought me two she-kits, and told me that their mother didn't have any milk. He told me their names, asked me to keep them, and then ran away. I knew an upwalker who took care of kittens, so I brought them to the upwalker's house."

Leafstreak gazed at the ground before looking at her once more. "Do you recognize the tom who brought you the kits?"

Before Marley could respond, Minnowflight had started to speak. "Thank you, Leafstreak, for trying to find the answer to this mystery. However, I don't think that this is the best way to greet newcomers." The gray-and-white cat straightened up, "What we should be doing right now is finding out if these she-cats are in need of any assistance."

Lostpaw looked upwards at the Pine Rock after gazing at Ivorykit, who had given a vexed sigh of relief. Although he was interested in finding the answer, he agreed with the Queen, and knew that some of his Clanmates did as well.

"We could have found who the traitor is if you hadn't interrupted... It doesn't matter what they need, they're just rogues..." Lostpaw pricked his ears, hearing a quiet snarl coming from the top of Pine Rock.

"Don't start unnecessary trouble," a voice hissed back.

The dark brown apprentice's pelt pricked as he looked over at his mentor. Scorchedfur's eyes were narrowed as she gazed up at the Pine Rock. He looked back up as well and made eye contact with Poppykit, who anxiously swished her ginger tail.

"Scorchedfur, escort these she-cats out of camp. They have until moonhigh to leave Clan territory," Kestrelfall ordered.

Lostpaw stared upwards, shocked. But the Code of the Stars says that we must help rogues. Minnowflight seemed even more appalled with a questioning yet angry look on her face.

"Actually, these she-cats will not be leaving camp." Minnowflight's voice held power and authority. "The eighteenth law of the Code of the Stars claims that injured rogues or kittypets must stay in MistClan to heal." She looked down at the patrol with amber eyes reflecting the moon's light. "Scorchedfur, are these she-cats sick or hurt?"

"These she-cats aren't sick or hurt, but they are very hungry and I can see their ribs. The tortoiseshell has mentioned that she and the rest of them have had to travel due to a lack of food."

Lostpaw felt fur brush against his remaining leg. Ivorykit was twitching impatiently, and as his eyes wandered over to her paws, he could see her claws unsheathed and digging into the ground. She won't attack anybody, right? He brushed the thought away as he heard the King give a deep sigh.

"Alright...they can stay, but only for a quarter-mo-" Kestrelfall was interrupted by a louder voice.

"These she-cats may stay for a half-moon and share our meals and dens. When they are strong enough, we will let them on their way." Minnowflight's queenly voice rang over the gathered cats.

Lostpaw smiled and looked at his mentor who was smirking up at the Pine Rock. They're going to stay! He gazed towards Ivorykit, who was sniggering at Azaleakit.

Minnowflight spoke up once more, "For now, they shall be cared for in the medicine den." The gray-and-white she-cat walked down the side of the Pine Rock, Poppykit following. "Cats of MistClan, you are now dismissed."

. . . . .

Lostpaw yawned, sitting by the camp's entrance. He was waiting for Thornpaw to return back to camp so that he could tell him about what happened.

"Lostpaw," Scorchedfur softly mewed, "It'll be moonhigh soon. You should go to sleep now."

The dark brown apprentice flicked his ear, "I'm waiting for Thornpaw. I want to tell him about everything."

"Alright, but don't stay up too late. Once it reaches moonhigh I expect you to be in your nest and dreaming." Scorchedfur purred and trotted over to the warriors den.

After a while of waiting, Lostpaw began to lose hope that his brother would return in time. However, he heard the brushing of grass from outside of camp. He swiveled his ears towards the entrance and stepped out of the way. Sure enough, in came his large tabby brother and his small mentor.  Lostpaw watched as both cats went to the fresh-kill pile. He never realized how large Thornpaw really was until seeing him beside Snowleap.

A flash of white fur darted past Lostpaw. He blinked and gazed at his brother who was too invested in his meal to notice. The dark brown apprentice sighed and walked over to Thornpaw once he was done eating.

"Hey, Thornpaw, something exciting happened-" Lostpaw didn't get to finish as Thornpaw was already disappearing into the apprentice den. I don't think he heard me.

Lostpaw trotted over to his dark brown brother. "Hey, Thornpaw-"

"What?!" Thornpaw whipped around and glared at his brother.

"Well," Lostpaw glanced away, "Today something important happened. There are-"

"I'm going to sleep. I'm tired. I'll hear what you have to say tomorrow." Without a further word, Thornpaw stalked into the apprentice den.

Lostpaw exhaled deeply. Well, I stayed up for nothing. I'm going to be very tired in the morning... The apprentice dragged himself to his nest, keeping his icy-blue gaze on the ground. He curled up, yawned, and rested his head on his paws. Lostpaw closed his eyes, ready to fall in a deep slumber.

Little did the apprentice know that he would soon meet a young cat who was powerful enough to change the entire fate of MistClan...for the worst...forever.

THANK YOU GUYS SOOOOOO MUCH!!!!! I HAVE REACHED 252 FOLLOWERS!!!!! I HAVE FINISHED CHAPTER 11!!!!!

There are two people who I would like to thank for helping me with chapter 11.

1. OllyTheOrangeCat

Like with chapter 8, Olly helped write this chapter. She wrote most of the second half and gave me plenty of ideas. She helped me capture Olly and Antlerlight's personalities perfectly, and she helped me write Azaleakit and Ivorykit. Without her help I never would have been able to finish this chapter.

Also, Azaleakit and Ivorykit belong equally to Olly and I. She came up with their names and I brought them into the world. Those gals have reached their way onto both of our top ten favorite characters list.

2. TwentyMapleLeaves

Maple helped me come up with the beginning of this chapter. She gave me a couple of tips when it comes to starting this chapter, so thank you for that!

No, this isn't the end of my author's note. I have a question for you, readers.

Why do you think Ivorykit and Azaleakit have Clan names?
