CHAPTER SEVEN----▹

Leigh very reluctantly answered the phone when Christine's name flashed across the screen, "Hello?" she asked, her voice a little raspy from all of the crying she had done in the past thirty minutes, "Leigh! Thank God, we were so worried," Christine's voice echoed through the phone, Leigh readjusted herself into a seated position, "Who? You and my Father?" Leigh asked, she felt bad using that tone of voice with Christine, the woman who genuinely cared about her wellbeing, but just thought of her father made her bitter. "Leigh, he does care about you." Christine said, "Then why has he always pushed me so hard, and never acted like he gave a shit about me after my mother left."

"He loves you, Leigh," she tried, "Yeah, well he sure as hell has a weird way of showing it." the brunette huffed, a beat of silence passed by, "Look Christine, I'm glad you're ok, I am truly, but the next time my father wants to check on me, tell him to call me his damn self." Leigh hung up on the woman, she glanced out the window watching as Tony and Steve chopped up some wood. There was a soft knock on the door, "You ok flower?" Natasha asked, "Not really. You?" the redhead shrugged, "Not really no."

Natasha sat down on the floor next to Leigh, "Want me to braid your hair?" Leigh smiled softly at the question, that had been how Natasha calmed her down when anything went wrong, she nodded turning her back to the redhead. "How could someone do that?" Leigh whispered, "Watch as someone lives their worst nightmare?"

Natasha carefully brushed the brunette's hair, "I don't know flower," Leigh leaned back slightly further,  "It was Ally." she breathed, "That was the worst day of my life. I did everything I could, but it just wasn't enough." she played with the rings she was wearing, "I feel like I'm never enough, for anyone."  Natasha paused, "You're enough for me, Leigh."

Leigh nodded, and Natasha resumed braiding the brunette's hair, humming softly as she did. "I saw the look in your eyes, Nat. So I feel like I should say something." Leigh began, "You know you're not a monster Natasha." the redhead paused for a moment, "I need you to trust me when I say that. You Natasha Romanoff are not a monster."

"What they did to you, what they made you do, that doesn't change the fact that you saved me. And so many other people." Natasha smiled softly, "Your turn to listen to me Leigh, what happened to Ally was not your fault. No matter what Wanda showed you and no matter what you may think. It wasn't your fault."

----

Leigh took a sip of the sweet tea, listening to Fury drag out one of his speeches, "My contacts all say he's building something." Lila ran across the room, moving to stand by Natasha, "The amount of vibrainium he made off with." he said drying off a plate, the irony of  Earth's mightiest heroes, sitting around a table at a farmhouse eating dinner. Despite everything, they were all a family really. "Yes Fury, we know, this is a mess." Leigh sighed, but then sent a warm smile in Lila's direction. "I don't think it's just one thing." Fury finished ignoring the brunette, "What about Ultron himself?" Cap asked,

"Oh, he's easy to track, he's everywhere. The guy's multiplying faster than a Catholic rabbit." Fury stated, "Still doesn't help us get an angle on any of his plans though." Leigh ruffled Cooper's hair as she rushed by, "It's simple. Extinction. Evolution." Leigh spoke, "He has one main goal, and that's starting the world anew, rising from the ashes." Natasha eyed the brunette questioningly. "She has a point there, is he still going after nuclear codes?" Tony questioned throwing a dart.

"Yes he is, but he's not making any headway." Fury replied, "I cracked the pentagon's firewall in high school, on a dare." Tony spoke, "Well, I talked to our friends at the Nexus about that." Fury stated, "Nexus?" Cap asked, "It's the world internet hub, in Oslo, every byte of data flows through there. Fastest access on Earth."

"So, what'd they say?" Clint asked, "He's fixated on the missiles. But the codes are constantly being changed." Fury spoke, "By whom?" Tony asked, just a dart whisked by his face, he shot Clint a look of offense, and Clint shrugged. "Parties unknown."

"That's convenient. At least someone is stopping your homicidal robot from blowing up the planet," Leigh shrugged, and Nat sent her another 'You're not helping look'.

"We have an ally?" Natasha asked, "Ultron's got an enemy. That's not the same thing. Still, I'd pay folding money to know who it is." Fury stated. "I might need to visit Oslo, find our unknown." Tony spoke, "Well, this is good times boss but I was kind of  hoping when I saw you, you'd have more than that." Natasha spoke, and Leigh nodded in agreement, "Yeah whatever happened to that all-powerful director of SHIELD."

Fury shot the brunette a look, "You know I trained you right?" he asked, "That wasn't you. That was Melinda May." Leigh could feel Natasha's eyes burning a hole into the side of her face, "And Nat." she added quickly.

"I recruited you then." he tried, "Also...not you. That was Clint." she replied, "Whatever. Anyways, to answer your question, Natasha. I do...I have all of you." Fury said, and Leigh scoffed, "Yeah, because we are so well put together and know exactly how to win this." she noted sarcastically

"Back in the day, I had eyes everywhere. Ears everywhere else. You kids had all the tech you could dream up. Here we are all back on Earth, with nothing but our wit and our will to save the world." Fury spoke, "Ultron says the Avengers are the only thing between him and his mission. And whether he admits it or not,  his mission is global destruction."

Leigh sighed her eyes dropping to the table, "All this laid in a grave. So stand. Outwit the platinum bastard." he said before taking a seat, "Fury and his motivational speeches..." she muttered under her breath. "Steve doesn't like that kind of language." Natasha smirked, "You know what Romanoff."

"So what does he want?" Fury questioned, "To become better. Better than us. He keeps building bodies." Steve noted, "Person Bodies." Tony noted, "The human form is inefficient. Biologically speaking were outmoded. But he keeps coming back to it."

"When you two programmed him to protect the human race, you amazingly failed." Natasha noted, "Natty has a point." Leigh noted, "They don't need to be protected. They need to evolve. Ultron's going to evolve." Banner spoke, "How?" Fury asked, "Shit." Leigh breathed realization washing over her, "Has anyone been in contact with Helen Cho?"

"This week can not get any worse." Leigh muttered, and then she paused for a moment, "Nope, I take that back. I really don't wanna jinx us." she added, Clint chuckled, "Go get ready, kid. We've got a homicidal robot to outsmart." he stated, "I'm not a kid." she huffed, "I am literally in Med school Clint." she whined. "And yet you are literally acting like a child." he quipped, and Leigh flipped him off, "Whatever old man."

---

"I'll take Natasha and Clint." Cap stated, picking up his shield, "And me." Leigh quipped re-entering the room, "All right. Strictly recon. I'll hit the nexus, and join you as soon as I can." Tony spoke, "If Ultron's really building a body..."

"We'll lose. He'll outpower us..." Leigh spoke and Tony nodded, "An android designed by a robot." Tony spoke, "You know, I really miss the days when the weirdest thing science ever created was me." Cap said, Fury walked past them pulling on his coat, "I'll drop Banner off at the tower. You mind if I borrow Miss Hill?" Fury asked, and Leigh smiled, "Maybe you should be asking Nat that one," she spoke a teasing tone in her voice, Fury gave her a look and then proceeded to ignore the brunette. "She's all yours apparently," Tony said.

"What are you going to do?" Tony asked him, "I don't know. Something, dramatic I hope." Fury replied, "It's always dramatic with you, you literally pulled together the Avengers. And here we are being put in the position where we have to solve a problem, two of us," she side-eyed Tony, "Literally caused." she finished.

Clint had already said his goodbyes to Laura and most of the team had already exited the house, but Leigh trailed behind, "I'll bring him back to you in one piece, don't worry." the brunette note jokingly, "Are you sure you're ok for this?" the older woman asked worried about Leigh. "Yeah," she breathed, "I have to be." she paused, "I'll have plenty of time to relax once we get rid of this murder-y robot guy." Laura smiled gently, "Love ya, Mama Laura." Leigh joked, hugging the woman briefly before jogging to catch up with the team,

"Wait up guys! I'm shorter than most of you, I've still got two inches on Nat in height though,"
