VIVIANE
"Are you sure he's going to be fine with me moving into his space?" I ask my stepbrother, Daniel, for the millionth time.
"Vi, he's got a four bedroom, three bath apartment, and he's sharing it with his friend and an orange cat, trust me the last thing you're doing is intruding."
"I wish I could afford to pay for rent."
Daniel goes silent on the other end. "Look Vi, I get it. You're feeling guilty about this, but you don't have a choice. Heck, if I wasn't busting my ass here, working three jobs a day and going to school, I'd want you to stay with me, but—
I sigh, "Yeah, okay, I get it. You're miles away from me, and I can't just apply for a transfer in the middle of the term."
Daniel was my mom's first husband's son who grew up with me in the trailer park and since his alcoholic father was never around, my mom took care of Daniel like her own since she was a kind person, even though she was a druggie most of the time. My dad who was husband number two, wasn't any better though. He had serious gambling issues.
That says a lot about my mom's amazing choice in men.
Since the day I was born, Dan was the one taking care of me while my mother would be passed out with whatever stuff she'd snorted. When I was five and he was seven, she would hand him money and we would feed ourselves. At the age of twelve, he knew how to steal and use real guns, and he did it to protect me.
Dan wasn't just a step-brother to me, he was the only family I had and loved.
"Aiden is a very generous guy. When I asked him if he knew of any cheaper places around campus for you to live in, he offered his apartment, and you don't even have to pay the rent, Vi. Just buy the fucking groceries or something. It doesn't get better than this."
"To be honest, Dan, that's kinda sus. I don't know. Why would he even let some stranger stay at his place without expecting rent?"
Forgive me for being so trustworthy of people, but when you grow up in poverty, life makes you question everything. Nothing in this world comes for free, least of all, a roof over our heads.
Dan sighs again. He seems to be doing that a lot on this phone call. He's so done with me. Maybe I should just be grateful for the free room and stop asking him so many questions.
"Heard of Mitchell & Rothman law firm?"
"Uh, I guess in the news? They always took up bigger cases, like for corrupt politicians and innocent Hollywood wives who are poising their husbands. That M&R law firm, right?"
"Well, Aiden's parents own the firm." I gasp when he continues, "So, you get it? He's stinking rich, and that apartment is bought by his parents so he doesn't pay rent. He just parties hard and drives his ass to college. He wouldn't even notice you're there."
"And how is he friends with you?" I ask, trying not to sound inquisitive and ungrateful.
"Business. He used to host some pretty rad parties in his Florida beach house, and I happened to have stuff that he needed."
He didn't say exactly what Aiden needed that he provided, but I would be stupid not to read between the lines. Dan had some dangerous side hustles, and while I hated what he was doing, I also did not have any right to lecture him about it.
Not when I was doing something that he would never approve of.
That's why I wanted to take this secret to the grave, the secret that I was a cam girl who chatted and flirted with men who were looking for particular services. I didn't really have a model like figure, so no agency would hire me. I was a one-woman show. I bought my own props, did my own makeup and set up an account, and before I knew it. I'd lured some men into viewing my content.
I was new to this, so my clients weren't too many, but the money was helping me pay my father's debts.
Yes, you heard me. My dad had been dealing with some dangerous people before he went missing. I suspected they were the reason he had gone missing. He was in a huge debt that the loan sharks wanted me to replay. They would hunt me down and kill me. Worse, they would go after Daniel, who had nothing to do with any of this.
My father had messed up, so I was the one who was going to pay for it. Not Daniel. He'd done a lot for me already.
I know my brother wouldn't like it if he finds out I'm doing this Cam-girl side hustle. I'm hoping to take that secret to the grave.
Anxiety and worry gnaws into me as I pull into the parking lot of the Highrise apartment complex. The place has a twenty-four-hour security.
Aiden must have told the guard that I was coming since he let me in without hesitation when I told him my name.
Just to be on the safer side, I'd already texted Aiden to let him know that I was coming today, and he responded instantly, letting me know that I was welcome anytime.
The security helps me drag the luggage into the elevator and then he was gone, which makes this even more awkward.
I drag my luggage to the apartment and press the intercom. A minute later, the door opens and I'm welcomed by a gorgeous man. Well, gorgeous is an understatement to describe Aiden.
He's got wavy dark hair that borders to brown, more volume in the front, shorter at the back, eyes which look like a mix between blue and green as if both colors were trying to dominate the other and an angular jawline that's sharper than my career. He's wearing jeans and a t-shirt that seems like he's pulled on hurriedly to get the door. There's a stud piercing in one ear, and a tattoo on his neck. I believe it's a dragon, but I can't be sure.
Somehow, he pulls off this casual look with ease. He's naturally beautiful.
His lips curl into a smirk like he's noticed me staring, which I'm sure is a frequent occurrence where he's concerned.
He raises his hand out to me. "Viviane, right?"
I realize that my mouth's still open. "Uh, yeah...I'm...Uh...Viviane, but everyone calls me Vi. You can call me Vi, too. It's nice to meet you. Should I call you, Mr. Mitchell?" Great, now a certified chatterbox that can't seem to shut up.
Ugh, I hate how much effect this good-looking guy has on me.
"Actually, sir will do." The corners of his eyes crinkle with amusement.
I think he's teasing me. I'm not even sure.
"Sir?"
He chuckles and runs a hand through his hair. "I'm just messing with you, girl. I'm not your landlord. Just call me Aiden."
I laugh nervously. I'll have an embarrassing story to my grandkids, "Aiden, it is."
He smiles, then his gaze drifts to my two suitcases and one handbag. "This is all you've got?"
"Yeah, pretty much."
He starts picking up one suitcase. "Whoa! This is super heavy. Did you put rocks in here?"
More like props, but he doesn't need to know.
Aiden leads me into a big living area which would fit my entire old trailer park house in it. At first, I notice the balcony overlooking the entire city. Living on the twentieth floor has its perks, I guess.
There's a big flat tv mounted up against the wall with several gaming consoles lined up on the table below. There's an enormous couch that surrounds the tv and an attached kitchen with stainless steel appliances.
The place has a very modern chic look, but it also screams 'Man.'
He leads me to a set of stairs that takes us to another floor below. I have his back facing me as I follow him to my new room. "What do you think of the place so far?"
"I love it."
"Well, I hope you like your room as well." He opens a door to a bedroom at the far end of the passageway.
