eleven
Madison sat on the sofa, examining her painted black nails while Klaus and Elijah discussed their current situation.
"The Italians call them strega. The Yoruba of West Africa call them aje, meaning mother. Where my mother was from, they called them häxa, and here we call them witch. Over the centuries, vampires have fought them and fought beside them, bedded them and burned them," Elijah spoke, flipping through an old book. "Whether adversary or ally, they have been a force to be reckoned with. Their ancestral magic anchors this city. There's never been one all-powerful witch until Davina."
"Supreme sitting right here," Madison waved her hand in front of his face. "And why are telling the history of witches to a witch?"
"Besides the Supreme," Elijah corrected himself, ignoring her last comment.
"Davina is now tucked in safe and sound down the hall under my protection," Klaus interrupted. "Your Celeste was quite beautiful and a portent of evil, according to our volatile artist in residence."
"Yes. Perhaps Davina's mistaken what she calls evil for power. Celeste was certainly very powerful in her day, but she's been dead for over two hundred years. I don't understand."
"You know, you guys are kind of stupid." The two Originals looked at her with surprise. "I was dead and I came back. What if Celeste did the same thing?"
"If she were alive we would know about it," the older Original waved the idea off. "But why all these sketches now?"
"Why does any witch do anything?" Klaus rolled his eyes.
"Again, right here."
Even without supernatural hearing, Marcel and Davina's argument could be heard downstairs where the two vampires and witch had gathered.
"Well, that's going well," Klaus smirked as he and made themselves drinks at the bar.
Madison pouted as she watched the brothers drink, wishing she wasn't pregnant so that she could.
"If you were trying to win the girl's trust, perhaps poisoning her one true love was not the most splendid idea," the older Mikaelson sipped at his drink.
"Oh. Are there any more inopportune deaths you'd like to wave in my face?"
Elijah and Madison shared a look before the vampire answered sarcastically, "Give us a month. We'll get you list."
"Young, old, dead, or alive, witches are a pain in the ass."
"Yeah, I'm sure that's what you were thinking when we were having sex." Klaus winked at her and she chuckled.
Her laughter stopped when the bickering upstairs stopped and panic broke out. She stood to check it out but Klaus held out his hand to stop her, going to see what the ruckus was about instead.
"Elijah?" Madison bit her lip and turned towards him. "There's something you need to know."
She opened her mouth to continue but the house began to shake. The pair made their way to the balcony that overlooked the courtyard where Rebekah stood in confusion.
"What the hell is going on?" The blonde Original question.
"Davina," Klaus and Madison spoke in unison.
-
Klaus, Elijah, Marcel, and Madison gathered in the living room, trying to decide what to do about Davina and her fast deterioration.
"This is madness. How can a 16-year-old girl shake the entire French quarter?" Klaus furrowed his brow.
"I've seen her rock the church, but I've never seen anything like this."
"How did you control her when she was in the attic?"
"I didn't have to. But then, I never killed her boyfriend," Marcel retorted.
"Yes, yes. We've been over this part already," the Hybrid waved his hand in dismissal. "The point is in her present state she's useless as a tool against the witches."
"She's not a tool," Madison frowned.
"Something's wrong with her."
"She has too much power that she cannot control. That much we already knew. But why is it manifesting itself in such an aggressive manner?" Elijah stood up abruptly, heading towards the door when his brother called out to him.
"Where are you going?" A look of confusion crossed Klaus' face.
"This is witch business. Let's ask a witch."
"Yeah, great idea. Go waste time trying to find Sophie," Madison snapped. "It's not like you have the Supreme living with you or anything."
"We don't want you to get hurt."
"I'm having a baby with Klaus. Getting hurt is kinda part of the package," Madison rolled her eyes and walked out of the room, into the hallway.
"Then tell us what is happening," Elijah caught her wrist.
The witch freed herself from his grip, a glare still set on her face, "Sophie made me go through your old journals so that she could dig up Celeste. And before you lecture me, I know I should've asked you. I also know you loved her, and that you promised she'd be buried and left in peace so that the coven couldn't take her magic. But I did it anyway."
"You not only violated my privacy, you have broken my promise to her," Elijah was clearly upset. "Why?"
"Sophie said she'd undo the curse on mine and Hayley's family."
"You don't care about them."
"You're right. I don't, but Hayley does, and I care about her." Madison turned on her heel and started down the hallway. "Maybe you should go to Sophie for all this. She's a better leader than I'll ever be."
-
Madison packed canned food into boxes, trying her hardest to keep her sobs silent as Klaus walked down the stairs, but to no avail.
"What are you doing?" Klaus questioned, worry crossing his face when he noticed the tears streaming down her cheeks.
"Hayley and I were gonna take these to the – "
"If you say, Bayou, I will find a nice comfy dungeon and throw you in it. This is not the night to be out there – "
"For anyone," Madison cut him off this time. "But some people don't have a choice."
Klaus was silent for a moment before letting out a sigh, picking up one of the boxes, "Right. Grab that lot and come with me."
-
The Hybrid and the Supreme entered St Anne's carrying the boxes of food. Madison's eyes widened at the sight of all the people taking refuge in the church.
The priest, Father Kieran, rushed to the pair, "We still haven't gone through all that you've already provided, Klaus."
Klaus smiled and looked over at Madison, "Well, this newest bit isn't from me."
"Oh? That's very kind of you..." he trailed off, not knowing her name, or that they had family members in common.
"Madison," she looked at the people filling the church. "And these people are?"
"I asked Father Kieran to give them shelter. He suffers from an incessant desire to do good. But now, I need you to be useful. Marcel and Davina have disappeared." A look of confusion crossed Kieran's face. "I assume from the stupefied look on your face they haven't sought refuge in your attic."
"No. Those days are gone."
"Then energize your resources. I don't need to remind you how important it is they be found."
"Yes," the priest left to make some calls, leaving the couple alone.
"These people, they're werewolves. And the priest, he said that you donated the food," she looked at her boyfriend in surprise when she finally realised what was going on. "You're helping them?"
"They're not your werewolves. They're my clan. From very far back. They've fallen upon hard times, and their plight has brought out the philanthropist in me," Klaus shrugged. "What can I say? Must be Elijah's influence."
"What do you mean, your clan?"
"The blood that runs in their veins runs in mine," he looked down at her baby bump. "And in our child's."
"This family gets more complicated by the second," Madison pinched the bridge of her nose.
"Listen, Madison, word of advice when dealing with Elijah? Don't do as I do. Just apologize. He's accomplished in many things, but he is a master of forgiveness."
-
Elijah, Klaus, Madison, Sophie, and Father Kieran stood in the backyard of the plantation house where a grave had been dug for Esther. The group stood under umbrella's to keep them protected from the heavy rain as Rebekah joined them.
"Did you find them? Will he bring her?" Klaus questioned his sister as she joined them.
"He'll bring her," Rebekah answered solemnly.
Madison bit her lip, heartbroken that the girl she had died trying to protect was now going to die anyway.
"Are you ready to do this?" Kieran questioned the group.
"Always and forever," Klaus nodded, taking a dagger and slicing his palm, letting the blood drip over Esther's grave.
The blade was passed to Rebekah, and then Elijah, who both did the same before it was handed to Madison. The Supreme sighed and sliced her palm, watching the blood fall into the grave as she winced slightly.
She handed the knife back to Kieran who threw it in the grave, "It's done."
-
"Madison, you're the Supreme. You have to do it," Sophie pushed the knife into her hands.
"No I can't. I won't," she refused to take the blade, looking over to Klaus for help. "Davina is my family, I can't just slit her throat."
"You have to, for the sake of the coven."
"Madison," the Hybrid called to her. "It's for the sake of the city."
"If she doesn't come back I will raise hell," Madison warned.
"I wouldn't expect anything less," Sophie extended the knife to her again and she hesitantly took it.
Flames erupted at the gates of the cemetery, startling the small group that had gathered.
"Fire," Sophie muttered.
Marcel entered shortly after, carrying Davina in his arms. Flames licked at his heels as he made his way to the altar where the two witches stood and set Davina down gently. Madison held the athame over the flames before walking towards Davina.
"Davina, I am so sorry."
"It's not your fault," she reassured. "I've had Tim, Monique, Marcel, and you. And that's more than most people. Thank you for teaching me everything I know, Maddy."
"Don't talk like you're not gonna come back," Madison shook her head.
"Sorry," the young witch laughed through her tears.
Madison pulled her in and wrapped her arms around her tightly, placing a gentle kiss to her forehead before pulling away.
"Do you believe in the harvest?" The Supreme had tears in her eyes as she spoke.
"I believe," Davina nodded nervously.
As soon as the words had left her lips, Madison raised the knife and slit Davina's throat. The young girl reached for her wound, before she began to fall. Marcel managed to catch her, the tears in his eyes now flowing down his face. The vampire laid Davina's body down next to the Supreme.
The rain stopped, and the dead witch's skin glowed gold as if her magic was leaving her body and flowing into the earth.
"After the Harvest comes the Reaping. Their sacrifices made and accepted. We call upon our Elders to resurrect the chosen ones." The tears in her eyes streamed down her cheeks as nothing happened. "We call upon our Elders to resurrect the chosen ones... Resurrect your chosen ones... Please? I beg..."
Madison realised nothing was going to happen and she quickly became angry. She fell to her knees, looked towards the sky and began to yell through her sobs.
"Come on you bitches! I know you hate me and I hate you but once, just this once, please, bring her back." Madison began to sob hysterically and Klaus ran to her, wrapping his strong arms around her. "No! She has to come back."
Hayley and Rebekah looked over at the Supreme, who was both emotionally and physically exhausted, with tears spilling from their eyes. Elijah watched on with a mournful expression, and Marcel was just angry. He glared hatefully at Klaus before running away.
Madison managed to free herself from Klaus' grip and cradled Davina's lifeless body to her chest, the young witch's blood now covering her clothes too.
-
Madison walked down the street away from everybody else, but Elijah caught up to her.
"I understand that you were close with Davina."
"Taught her everything she knew. She was like the little sister I never had," Madison shrugged, not wanting to remember all the happy times they shared. "And now she's nothing. Just... dead."
"Do you need anything? A shoulder to cry on? Someone to talk to?" Elijah offered.
"Are you ready to forgive me yet?"
"It's not that easy, Madison," he sighed.
"I've already lost someone tonight, don't let me lost you too." He expression softened whilst her's hardened. "Because if I have, then what I need is a goddamn cigarette."
The witch picked up her pace, which was harder than it looked due to her baby bump, and managed to distance herself even more from the people she loved.
-
Madison inhaled deeply and flicked her hair off her shoulder, holding the bow in her hands. The cello rested between her legs, and she placed her thin fingers on the strings, using the bow to create tragically beautiful melodies.
The sound of music travelled throughout the compound, and Klaus found his way to the origin of the sound. When the Supreme had finished the piece he began to clap. She whipped around to face him with a quick inhale of breath.
"You scared me."
"Apologies, love," he watched as she stood up and put it back in the case. "You play beautifully."
"Which is super weird, because that's the first time I've even thought about playing the cello."
"Madison, I know tonight can't have been easy for you – "
"I don't want nor do I need your sympathy, Klaus," Madison rolled her eyes, tying her hair back messily.
"I know you don't. But know, little witch, that I think you are a great leader," he walked up to her and placed a hand on her baby bump. "And our child will be a great leader too."
She pressed her lips to his, feeling safer than ever in his arms.
