Pack or Lone Wolf

The next morning was Saturday so I had all day to formulate my plan of attack for how to let Henry coexist with our pack. By the time the plan is enacted my parents have rushed me into the plan. We gathered in the living room like we do whenever we needed to talk about something major. They mentioned that I had been acting weird and we're patiently waiting for me to make my case.

"You want to know what's wrong with me? I want to fight for Henry's rights." As soon as I said it they flashed their eyes and started to growl. I had stepped into dangerous territory.

"You want that scoundrel around here?" My mom spoke. "He could reveal our secrets to the world!"

"He and his mother are trying to rebuild their lives! His dad went wild. At least let him stay, he could pledge his loyalty to us."

"He could destroy us all! And your sympathy towards him will not be tolerated!" My dad growled then continued with his statement. "Are you having other feelings for him?"

"No! I only told him yesterday that he needs to keep his wolf in check!" By now I am growling too.

"Well then think about yourself. If you think about defending him again then you will no longer be a part of our pack! We cannot show weakness to anyone!"

"What!? I have nothing with him! Even you told me to keep tabs on him so he doesn't reveal us to the world!" I leave them with that and sprint away from home. They were not going to talk to me that way. Without realizing it I ended back up at the spot with the creek flowing under the overlook. Unfortunately he was there too.

Hearing me approach he slightly turned and smelled the air. After that he turned back to the creek and looked comfortable there. Still fuming I sat down in front of him. He didn't bother asking what had brought me here but he didn't say anything. Something happened again and I started venting to him.

"I tried to fight for you with my parents. They think that you're going to expose our secret and they want you gone sooner rather than later. I tried to plead your case after what you told me and they threatened to exile me from the pack if I chose you over them. So I left them to argue about it and I came to cool off." He still didn't say anything but I know he heard everything.

After a long silence he spoke up. "You didn't have to do that for me. Actually I came here to cool off too but..." Surprisingly I wanted him to continue, but whatever it was it was tearing him apart.

"My mom wasn't home when I left you yesterday. I assumed she was still at work so I didn't think anything about it until this morning. There was a scrawled note on the counter basically telling me that she was running away after dad and she would never see me again unless I followed her." His hands moved to his eyes and knew he was in a lot of pain. I cannot believe how terrible this is for him and how he would do on his own.

"You know you don't have to follow her right? You could defy her and stay with what's familiar to you."

"You don't get it!" He shouted. "Having one parent who didn't leave you is one thing. It's another game when that parent you relied on for much of your life leaves to go after the one who was never there for me!" He paused again before he confessed. "I don't know what to do. I really can't stay here because that puts you and your family at risk, but going with my mother seems suspicious too."

All I could think to do is to get up and hug him. At first he was startled and he growled a little but soon he got over it and returned the favor. We stayed that way for a while not speaking of breaking the moment. Slowly his hands let go and returned to his side and he looked at me. He knows now that I do care for him like he is a brother but maybe there could be something else.

We stay put for a while just taking in the surroundings but sooner than I expected he got up and started to walk away. He has a big decision to make and I will let him have that space. Before I knew he had stopped and asked me if I wanted to come with him so he wasn't alone. I happily complied.
