Night In

Most times when I get stuck babysitting my parents I try to ignore the howls coming from the basement. While they are transformed I take that as my alone time. Taking my popcorn and the remote back to the recliner I click on the Scream movie and begin to chow down on the salty popcorn. Yet as I'm watching I start to hear clear howling, not the normally muffled howls from the basement. This time it sounded like the howls we not just from below my seat, and I paused the movie to make sure I wasn't simply dreaming.

Taking the flashlight off the hook next to the door I stepped into my Converse and begin sweeping the yard. There had to be something up, it wasn't normal that there was howling out here. That is unless my parents found a way to break out. Besides, Nebraska was not a popular place for wild wolves.

By now not only did I not see my parents but the foggy, frigid air was chilling me to the bone. Despite this I knew that there was only one place left to look, the shed. To our family friends it was any normal lawn shed, but for us it also doubled as a secret entry into the basement. I shine the flashlight like a lighthouse and the door is wide open. Oh, and sure enough there's my mom pawing away at the dirt.

She turned on me and snarled, baring her teeth. Knowing this was my mom I knew fighting her wouldn't help me so I stayed my ground. She tried to advance and escape from me but I countered her, making sure she couldn't run away. Mustering my courage I shouted at her to go back into the basement. With dad not far behind her, I gave her less room to maneuver and she slowly began edging next to the passageway down.

One last glare and something scared her because she stumbled back into the basement. Not long after I latched the trapdoor shut safely containing my parents until morning. As I walked away they howled back, begging me to let them out again. I had had enough antics for the day and really needed some me time. I went back inside and continued watching my movie and eating my popcorn until I dozed off.

I realized by the next morning my parents would be back to normal and would demand to know why I had to put them back in their den. For that day it was not my best day and I really didn't want to deal with anything else. However much I didn't want to deal with anything else it was a full moon, and no wolfblood can resist the pull of the moon.

Even after all the school work is done my secret life is still looming closer and closer. My whole family is a line of wolfblood ancestors. They were one of the best at hiding in plain sight, then keeping themselves locked away during full and new moons. One day, my parents keep telling me, I will someday join them and become a fully fledged wolfblood.
