12. Testing The Limits
"Since she accepted the job offer, we need to take advantage of all the time that Gemini is present," said Namjoon quietly to Taehyung as he stayed hidden under the counter the next day. There were a few early bird customers that were currently browsing the new release section so Namjoon was trying to make it seem like he was talking to himself.
There wasn't much Taehyung could do by way of a reply right then in the form he was in, so he let out a growl as he stayed there. It was muffled, but Namjoon heard it all the same.
"The first thing we need to do is to test the limits of this being human thing. Obviously we know it happens whenever she is around for whatever reason, but we need to see how far apart you two can get without the change reversing back. We're going to do it aisle by aisle. I'll pretend to have her organize each, and we'll let her get further and further away. We'll have a starting point and an ending point that I'll be able to measure."
Taehyung wished he was human right then because he had a million and one questions for Namjoon. He could feel the questions racing about his mind. What if Gemini caught on? What if her overprotective step brother Yoongi showed up with her as a tail? What if the customers caught sight of him in tiger form and reported them to authorities? What would they do to keep Dal from finding out the truth? Taehyung turned his head to the side when he felt the curtain being lifted away some; Namjoon's face filled the gap.
"You didn't answer," he said softly. "Don't worry. I'm on your side now and we'll figure it out."
Taehyung nodded his head before he laid down again, letting out a sigh. Namjoon dropped the curtain when he heard the bell above the door ring; eyes widening when he saw Gemini enter with Yoongi in tow.
"You're early," said Namjoon.
Early? Taehyung's interest was peaked, even more so when he saw the return of his human limbs. He shuffled about in the cramped space on all fours, putting on the t-shirt and sweatpants that Namjoon had left there for him. The black t-shirt was baggy and so were the black sweatpants that he had to tighten with the draw strings once he figured out how to flip onto his back. He remembered Namjoon's lecture to him the other night about hulking out in nice clothes. Whatever that meant. Taehyung moved to crawl out from under the counter after, quickly moving onto his knees to pretend he was organizing something if anyone should look over the counter. Namjoon turned his head briefly to see a human Taehyung, smiling softly before returning his full attention back to Gemini.
"Yeah. Sorry. I just want to make a good impression on my first day of a new job," she said with a smile. "Where's your boss?"
"Oh? You mean Dal?" asked Namjoon. "He's busy."
Namjoon thought briefly on how he had made Dal busy with trying to find rare books that he claimed customers wanted desperately. He felt bad being deceptive towards Dal, but Taehyung was adamant that Dal not learn the truth.
"Oh, that's too bad, though I'm sure I'll meet him eventually," Gemini remarked.
Namjoon's attention turned then to Yoongi who stood a little ways behind Gemini. Yoongi let out a loud yawn, stretching his arms above his head and attracting the attention of the few other patrons about the place.
"Are you here to work too?" asked Namjoon.
"Funny," said Yoongi as he looked back at Namjoon. "I'm here to keep an eye on my little sister."
"Little?"
Gemini turned to fix Yoongi with a look before she added, "And I thought that you were the one saying it was your obligation to hook me up anyway? So why are you so scared of Namjoon?"
Namjoon couldn't help but to chuckle as he watched Yoongi's face flush, and his mouth open and close like a fish as he stared at her. Taehyung chuckled too from where he was, causing Gemini to look over the counter at him. He lifted his head so that his eyes locked with hers.
"Hello again," said Gemini.
"What? Is there seriously another one hiding back there?" asked Yoongi as he looked where Gemini was, spotting Taehyung. "Oh. It's just you."
Taehyung flushed some, but didn't say anything aside from 'hello' to the both of them as he rose to his feet. Standing vertically was still coming as a challenge to him, but he tried to disguise it by gripping the counter in front of him tightly so he didn't tip over. Namjoon moved to pat Taehyung gently on the back as he gestured a hand at the book shop.
"I'll give you the grand tour. Taehyung, how's about you start shelving some of the merchandise?"
Yoongi watched Taehyung warily, noticing how he walked around the counter whilst never once loosening his grip on it. Yoongi wondered what was wrong with the man.
"Well, you knock yourself out, sis," said Yoongi. "I'm going to go take a seat on one of those sofas in the new release section. I'll still be checking on you once in a while though."
"Go take a nap on the sofa, Yoongi," said Gemini. "I'll be fine."
"A nap? I feel insulted."
"You were the one yawning five seconds ago, and also the one who was a grumpy bear when I woke you up this morning," said Gemini. "You shouldn't be insulted. You should feel complimented that I care you get the rest you apparently need."
Yoongi shot a fake glare Gemini's way which caused her to laugh. Gemini watched as Yoongi moved to do exactly what he said he would do. Yoongi plopped himself down onto the sofa, crossing his legs across it as he laid back and watched Namjoon and Gemini walk towards the first aisle. His eyes followed Taehyung after who walked in the same direction, but made for the darker part near the backs of the aisles.
"What are you doing?..." Yoongi muttered before sighing. He leaned his head back against the arm rest and closed his eyes, hoping to be graced with a few moments of sleep.
Taehyung stayed near the darkness by the back aisle, hiding himself in the shadows by a bookcase for extra protection. Taehyung then slipped his hand into the pocket of the sweatpants he had on, grabbing the bookmark that he had grabbed off the counter on the way by. He moved to lay the bookmark on the floor as a starting point for Namjoon to eventually measure. He then watched as Namjoon led Gemini aisle by aisle to show her the merchandise. He stayed where he was, trying to keep track of each aisle that Namjoon casually popped out of in his line of view. So far they had made it four aisles back, and he was fine. By the time they hit the fifth aisle though, Taehyung felt his stomach turn. He bit his lip as he moved onto his knees, thankful for the shadows as he tried to slip out of the t-shirt as his hands shook, turning back to paws. The sweatpants hadn't been as fortunate, but he was sure that Namjoon would forgive him.
Back as a tiger, Taehyung gripped the t-shirt in his mouth before nosing it under a nearby box. His tiger form was bulkier than his human form, which caused him to worry about the space he was hiding out in. There was a risk that he could be spotted in this form while he waited for Namjoon to return back his way with Gemini.
'Just don't move,' he thought. 'Don't breathe.'
Taehyung was relieved when Namjoon started to move back in his direction. He turned human again as Gemini passed by aisle four, then three. He quickly dug the t-shirt back out from where he had hidden it, slipping it over his head as he moved to join them.
"What happened to your sweatpants, Tae?" asked Gemini when he stood in front of them.
Taehyung looked down to see that the sweatpants that he was wearing were more like shreds of fabric attached to a waist band like some sort of hippie hula skirt. He flushed as Gemini laughed.
"I got into a fight with a box cutter and lost," said Taehyung, trying to think up an excuse on the fly.
"Well, I'm glad you didn't break any skin," said Gemini. "Be more careful next time."
Taehyung gave her a quick smile, nodding his head.
Yoongi cracked an eye open from where he was on the sofa; eyes widening at the sight of the shredded sweats that Taehyung was wearing. There was something off about the man, and he knew it. Until he figured out what it was, he wasn't particularly enthused about him hanging about Gemini.
"Whatever you're hiding," said Yoongi softly to himself. "I will figure it out."
