JACE's POV
I took a deep breath as I stared at the building in front of me. It has been three years since the last time I last stepped foot inside it and it kinda felt weird to be back. I'm currently at the headquarters of ET VINDEX which was located on top of the mountains.
It was a four-story building covered by tall trees. Not just that. The whole mountain was restricted one so people aren't allowed to even close.
I eyed the symbol of ET VINDEX which was carved on the top part of the entrance of the building. When I left the organization three years ago, I didn't have any plans of coming back because I was determined to start anew without their meddling.
In my mind back then, my priority was my family. I thought, I made the right decision but it costed the life of our son which prompted my wife to leave me. But now that Christine and I finally got back together, the circumstances were unexpected which left me with no choice but to seek the help of the organization.
Now, I'm one of them again.
I huffed before finally entering inside. Some of our agents saw me and the surprise look on their faces was clear, but quickly became formal. They greeted me and I nodded my head as a response.
The number of special agents in the organization reaches around 20 only because choosing agents is not an easy task. They're personally handpicked by the bosses of the organization because of their skills and knowledge not to mention connection.
These agents are one of a kind and underwent dangerous and special kinds of training just to be qualified to such kind of work.
Aside form being one of the bosses, I chose to participate on the job too so I became an agent. It wasn't full time though because I had a lot of work that I needed to do at my company.
"Welcome back, Slate. Jinn is expecting you in his office." I looked at my right side and saw Red. A tight smile speared on my face. She was wearing a red hoodie. She really is boyish most of the time. Until now, I still can't believe that she would be one of the agents of the organization.
"I can't believe that I'm actually here again." I answered and then released a breath. She chuckled and then walked towards.
"I knew you'd come back. Anyway, this is my welcome gift for you." I raised my eyebrows at her as I eyed what she was holding out. It was a Glock 19. The corner of my lips twitched and then accepted the gift. I looked at every detail of it.
"Thanks. It's been a while since I last held a gun."
"Well, I have a lot of guns in my collection. If you want, I can give you another one." She offered. I chuckled. She really loves collecting different kinds of guns. She even has grenades and bombs. Well, she's not a defense contractor for nothing.
"Why do I feel like I'm going to a war right away on my first day here?" I couldn't help but to get amused. She crossed her arms across her chest.
"Well, you will definitely use that later for sure. Knowing you, patience is not in your vocabulary." She even tsked a couple of times.
"What do you mean?"
"My tongue is itching to tell you everything but I'm sure, Jinn won't like that. Just go inside his office. He's waiting for you. Anyway, the other bosses are not here right now so it's just you and Jinn."
"Okay. I'm going then." She nodded her head. I walked past her and then walked straight to Jinn's office. I was about to knock when the door suddenly opened, and the serious face of Jinn was the first thing that I saw.
"Glad you're finally here. Come with me." He closed the door and walked towards the stairs. My eyebrows furrowed but I nodded my head. We walked for about a minute or so before finally reaching the underground dungeon.
"Why the fùck are we here?" I asked with knitted eyebrows. Jinn threw me a glance and I caught the smirk on his face.
"You'll see." He then unlocked one of the doors and then entered inside. I let out a curse because of the foul smell of blood inside. I was about to ask another question when I saw a man; he looked beaten up, full of bruises and has a lot of dried blood on his body. He looked like he was on the verge of dying.
"Who is he?" I asked. Jinn faced me.
"He's one of the two men that I told you about before." My fists formed into tight fists as rage surged within me.
"I thought you already disposed them off?" I asked through gritted teeth. I've never expected to see one of them.
"Yes, I did but just one of them. I decided to spare this one for the moment because of you." My eyebrows crinkled even more as my jaw flexed. Jinn approached the guy who was tied up to a chair. It looked like he was sleeping or maybe, he passed out.
He then grabbed the man's bloody chin and forcefully lifted his face. I gasped as I zeroed my eyes on him. He looked achingly familiar.
"Do you remember this man?" Jinn asked. The man groaned before he slowly opened his eyes. Then, I saw his eyes widen when he saw me. I saw fear that passed through his eyes especially when he noticed the gun that I was holding.
"P-Please, have m-mercy on m-me." He pleaded with a faint voice. Jinn laughed.
"Mercy? Do you even know the meaning of the word?" He shook his head and then looked at me. "Look carefully. You'll surely remember who this guy is."
I did as I was told. Then, like a movie, that particular event replayed inside my head. Now, I already remembered where exactly I've seen this man.
He's one of the men that attacked my family that night three years ago. We thought, he was already dead that time because he was fatally shot, but apparently, he managed to survive. Maybe, someone took him while we were busy crying over JC's death.
Unexplainable loathe and rage overtook my senses upon learning that. This was the reason why I didn't come when Jinn informed me about them. I didn't want to lose myself.
My grip around the gun tightened even more.
"It's pity that you're still alive because I'm going to kill you right now!" I roared full of rage and then pointed the gun to his direction. Jinn chuckled.
"Go on. Kill him. I reserved him for you after all. I already got everything that I wanted from him. We're allowed to kill people like him anyway. No one will ever search for this man because he's been living in the underworld most of his life."
The man's eyes widened as fear flooded his face. "Please, no!"
Hearing his pleas added to the rage that I was feeling even more. This man was begging for me to spare his life but he didn't even blink an eye when they killed my son. My chest was already heaving as rage totally ate my whole being.
"Ahhh!" I screamed like I lost it. I cocked the gun that I was holding before pulling the trigger...
CHRISTINE's POV
I bit my lower lip when I looked at the result on the pregnancy test kit. Positive. Yes, I was undeniably happy but I couldn't help but to feel worried. Jace and I's lives are currently in danger and I don't want our baby to get involved in our mess. What happened to JC was enough and I would never let it happen again to my second baby.
I was right all along. I already suspected that I was pregnant ever since I first experienced morning sickness. I heaved a sigh. I wasn't sure if I would inform about this to Jace right away. He has a lot going on lately and I didn't want to add to his burden.
Thankfully, he wasn't here today. He told me last night that he would be gone early in the morning today because he needed to go to their organization's headquarter.
He told me not to worry about anything because he left his men in order to guard me while he's gone. I looked at my tummy and then caressed it full of love. I felt overwhelmingly happy. I couldn't believe that I'm actually pregnant again!
"I wish your big brother, JC, would be here, baby. I'm sure that if he's here, he would be happy knowing that he's going to be a big brother soon." I muttered and my heart clenched tightly.
If JC was only here, he would be four years old already. Tears threatened to fall from my eyes. Just remembering about my first born was too painful. I looked up and then took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.
"Sorry, baby. Mommy can't help but to feel this way. Don't get me wrong, okay? Mommy is happy that you're in my tummy." I kept on caressing my tummy and that made me calmer.
Later on, when I finally felt better, I took a shower. After that, I dressed up and then put some make-up on. I took the things that I needed to bring to the office and then went downstairs. I opened the door just to be surprised when I saw someone standing near the doorway.
He was smoking. He looked like the bad boy type. He has dark brown wavy hair.
"Who are you?" He smiled and then walked towards the nearest trashcan to throw his cigarette.
"Hello, Mrs. Montejo. I will be your bodyguard whenever your husband is absent." He looked serious but there was a glint of amusement in his eyes.
"Bodyguard? I thought Jace's men would just guard me from a distance?"
"Yes, they will, but aside from them, there's me. I will be your personal bodyguard who will be with you wherever you go."
"And your name is?" The corner of his lips twitched.
"You can call me Viper."
My forehead creased. "Viper? Is that even a name?" He chuckled.
"For now, I can't tell you my real name yet, Mrs. Montejo. But maybe, soon, I could." I almost rolled my eyes.
"Okay." I answered and then walked toward my car. I pressed the unlock key of my car key and was about to open the door when Viper spoke.
"I'm sorry, Mrs. Montejo, but your husband specifically instructed me not to let you drive. In short, I will be your driver/bodyguard."
"What?! Are you serious?!" I asked in disbelief. He chuckled.
"Yes, Mrs. Montejo. I'm just following orders." I sighed in defeat and then handed him the key. I didn't want to argue with him. I should've expected Jace to be this protective. Well, he's always been the protective type.
"Fine." He took it and then opened the back door for me. I got inside the car and then thanked him. He closed the door before he got onto the driver's seat. Seconds later, he drove the car passed the gates.
While we were on the road, we were both quiet. For some reason, Viper looked familiar. Maybe, I've seen him at least once before already. I've already met all the friends of Jace but I've met some of them once or twice only.
I cleared my throat to get his attention. "Viper, are you one of my husband's friends?" I voiced out curiously.
"Yes, Mrs. Montejo."
"You don't have to be so formal. You can call me Christine. Anyway, I feel like I've met you already before. Are you perhaps one of the members of TBG ?" He didn't answer.
I wanted to ask him if he was a member of ET VINDEX too but Jace strictly told me not to tell anyone that I knew a lot about the organization. It should remain secret.
I looked at him through the rearview mirror. He even scratched the back of his head as if he was having a hard time thinking what to answer me. For some reason, I felt like he was hesitant to answer my question.
"If you don't want to answer it, it's okay." He nodded his head and then released a breath as if he was relieved or something. I mentally shook my head. He's weird and mysterious not to mention handsome as well.
Why would a man as good-looking at him become a bodyguard?
I heard him chuckle. "Mrs. Montejo, I hate to say this but, please stop staring at me. If your husband saw you staring at me, he will surely break every bone in my body." I rolled my eyes.
"Whatever. For some reason, something's telling me that you're not just an ordinary person. You have a dangerous aura around you but for some reason, I don't feel scared around you." He laughed.
"Well, you can say that." After that, no one spoke again. I didn't insist on asking him questions because I knew that he would never answer me anyway. Then, about 10 minutes before we reach the Super L building, I noticed something. There was a Mexican food truck there on the side of the road. I suddenly salivated.
"Viper, wait. Please, park the car there on the free parking lot on the side of the road. I want to buy food from that food truck." I instructed him. His eyebrows knitted together and then looked around as if he was scrutinizing the safety of that area.
"Sure." He then maneuvered the car towards the parking area. We both went out of the car after he parked it.
"Just wait for me here." I instructed.
"No, can't do, Mrs. Montejo. I have to come with you." I rolled my eyes and just proceeded on walking towards the food truck.
I salivated even more when I saw that they were selling burritos. I couldn't help but to get amused of myself. The other day, my craving was strawberries. Now, burritos.
I ordered 4 burritos and while waiting, I sat on the chair there while Viper was just nearby, waiting for me. After a couple of minutes, my order was finally done. I paid for it and then took it. I was about to begin walking towards the parking lot when a kid suddenly snatched the bag of burritos from me and then ran away.
I couldn't even react right away as I followed him with my gaze. But then, he didn't get away that far because Viper was quick to catch him.
"Let go of me!" The kid yelled while struggling to free himself from Viper. He looked like a trapped cat. I hurriedly approach them. The kid was around 8 years old. His hair was messy, and his clothes were old and baggy.
"Why did you steal someone else's food? You know that that's not yours, right?" Viper asked with a calm voice. The kid tried to kick him as he struggled even more but Viper was quick to restrain him. The kid winced.
"Ouch"! He yelled and I suddenly felt bad for him.
"Viper, stop. Don't restrain him too tightly." I said. His grip loosened. I approached the boy.
"Hi." I said with a friendly tone. He looked at me but didn't answer.
"Why did you steal my food? You know that it's bad to steal, right? You could've asked me to buy one for you." He suddenly looked guilty as he looked down.
"S-Sorry. My siblings are hungry. We haven't eaten since last night." I felt like my heart sink. He looked like he was telling the truth.
"Why? Where are your parents?" His eyes looked away. He suddenly looked nervous. Something was really wrong with the kid's behavior. I was about to answer when he spoke.
"Please, don't report me to the police. I won't do it again. If you want, you can have it back." He begged and then tried to give the burritos back to me. I felt so bad hearing what he said.
"No, you can have it. Share it with your siblings. Don't worry because I won't report you to the police." His eyes brightened with happiness.
"Really, Miss?"
I smiled. "Yes. But tell me the truth, where are your parents?" The happy expression on his face faded and was replaced by evident fear.
"If you don't want to talk, it's okay. Let's do this then. If you need food, just come here around 8:30 am. I'll treat you."
"Really? Thank you, Miss!" He answered full of joy.
"You're welcome. You can go now. Be careful on your way home, okay?" He nodded his head enthusiastically and then went on ahead.
"Viper, lets follow that boy." I then said. I wanted to make sure that he wasn't living on the streets or maybe a victim of some syndicates.
"Are you sure, Mrs. Montejo? It's almost 9 already." Viper asked.
"It's okay. C'mon, let's go!" We went back to the car and then discreetly followed the boy. After about 10 minutes, I was surprised when he stopped in front of a two-story house. The property looked lavished and for sure, the owner was rich.
"I didn't expect this. That boy looks like he's an orphan or something but he actually lives in this house? How come he steals food?" I heard Viper say.
"I don't know but something's not right." I answered. Then, we saw the boy entered the gates. He kept on glancing around him.
Then suddenly, a small kid came out of nowhere and then approached the boy. He must be around 4 years old. The boy looked around again as if he was checking if someone was there before he brought out the burritos and gave one to the smaller kid.
For some reason, my heart skipped a beat upon gazing at the smaller kid who was so obviously happy as he started eating the burrito.
