Panic Attacks:
Panic attacks cause feelings of extreme anxiety or fear that last from a few minutes to an hour; the average panic attack lasts 20 to 30 minutes. Panic attacks are often unexpected, without an identified cause, though in other cases they develop in response to certain triggers. In general, they are not life-threatening, but experts suggest people who regularly experience them learn coping mechanisms and avoid triggers. For an episode to medically qualify as a panic attack, an individual must experience at least four of the numerous physical symptoms the event can produce.
1. Hyperventilation
Panic attacks can cause hyperventilation. The person experiencing the event will begin taking rapid, shallow breaths or inhaling quickly as if he or she cannot get enough oxygen. Often, the manifestation of such symptoms further alarms and panics the person, which compounds the symptom.
Her Kind of Panic Attacks:
Situational panic attacks are typically much more predictable than unexpected panic attacks, as they tend to occur when someone is exposed to something that knowingly insights panic in them. This type of panic attack is common in those who struggle with social phobia, which is a specific kind of anxiety disorder. So, when someone has social phobia and is knowingly going into a public setting such as a work meeting, family gathering, or even a birthday party, he or she can have a panic attack. And, being aware that having a panic attack is a possibility can make the odds of actually experiencing one much more likely, as the anxiety surrounding knowing what could happen can be extremely overwhelming.
