Chapter 34: A New Land
A flash of green past over a large lake of water followed closely by a sapphire
blue. The crystal clear lake showed the reflection of two dragons flying through the air, both around the same size and age. The sounds of their wing beats and rumbles of laughter were the only things that could be heard in the surrounding area.
Sharrag took a large flap of his wings and shot to the air as quickly as he could. Saphira followed close behind, determined to pin the wild dragon to the ground. In his claws he held a rather plumb looking deer that was the object of the chase. He looked back at the blue dragon who was steadily closing in on him, though not quite fast enough.
'Sharrag! Give that back! You know I was going to grab that first!' yelled the frustrated female.
Sharrag chortled a laugh and continued to fly higher, knowing that Saphira couldn't quite reach the height he could. Flying over the Beor Mountains had given him an almost immunity to the cold and lack of oxygen that was found at higher heights. Just as he thought Saphira realised what he was doing and pulled away with a roar of frustration. He knew he would pay for this stolen kill later.
A month had passed since the two of them had met. It had been the best month of Sharrag's life, one of the few times he could remember that was without worry and fear of survival. While Sharrag did spend a lot of time by himself, Saphira and him had been getting along easily. The green dragon still found himself entranced by her and couldn't help but spend as much time as possible with her.
It was a hard as well, for she had her eggs to look after and a few of the dragons from the eggs from Vroengard had hatched as well. One for one of the elves that lived with Eragon and the rest were wild. Sharrag had been trying to look after the wild ones, trying to teach them what he knew of the world and its dangers and challenges, but hatchling dragons were harder to deal with then Shrrg pups.
Eragon and the elves had been building some sought of two-leg castle for the new generation of dragon riders. Sharrag helped when they needed it but he found it boring and tedious work. He didn't understand why they couldn't just live in caves like he did. It was a lot easier and caves were a lot harder to break.
Sharrag smiled as he disappeared into the clouds and from view of Saphira. He quickly closed and hid his mind from the blue dragoness and began to make his way towards where Eragon and the elves were. Tucking in his wings he shot down towards the mountain where the castle was being created.
The new land they had found was a large mountain range that was somewhere between the height of the Beors and the Spine, though the mountains looked pretty small to him. Eragon and the elves had sailed the boat into a large valley that acted like almost like a giant bowl. In the middle was a large lake about three kilometres wide and four long. As far as Sharrag had seen there wasn't anyone that lived there besides them and the natural wildlife, but he had seen evidence of two-leg activity near the area.
The castle they were building was on one side of the valley and the cave he had chosen was on the other. It was a deliberate decision because, while Eragon and the other two-legs helped with raising the dragons, it was a smart idea to leave the wild dragons to fend for themselves without outside intervention.
Sharrag landed on the grounds where the castle was being built and hurried inside. The vastness of the castle impressed him. It was big enough to fit a dragon over ten times his size and could fit a few hundred comfortably, well at least that was what he had thought. So far they had built the central part of the palace, the place where he assumed all the new dragon riders would meet and eat and talk about what was to come. He had seen the plans for the castle, and was impressed by how far Eragon was thinking.
The whole place would be built from stone mined with magic from the mountains. Saphira would then melt the stone with her fire, allowing Eragon and the elves to craft the stone walls. The training arenas would be built inside the mountains using the natural formations and caves in the rock. There would be a hundred dragon rider rooms, each big enough to fit a young dragon inside comfortably. As he had thought before, an impressive design.
"Sharrag," greeted an elf that was in the main room of the castle as well, "What brings you here?"
Sharrag glanced at the elf, 'I'm hiding from Saphira. I stole her hunt and she is now trying to hunt me.'
The elf's mouth twitched with a smile at the story. They were getting used to the constant games played by the two of them. It happened almost everyday. When either of them got free time away from there duties they would get together above the lake to relax and hunt.
"There is a new cave that has just been broken into," said the elf, "It would seem to be large enough for you to fit without to much trouble. You may try there."
Sharrag nodded his thanks and quickly trotted in the direction the elf had pointed him. He slipped through the large, dragon-sized corridors and towards the cave. He didn't see many of the elves as he walked, for there weren't many of them around, thirteen including Eragon. He knew that in the years to follow the halls would steadily fill up and when you looked to the sky it would be the colour of the rainbow because of the amount of dragons, but at the moment it was empty.
Once he found the cave he slipped into it quickly. He smiled and set down his stolen deer to eat. He was going to go hunting for Saphira later, and he was hungry at that moment so he knew she wouldn't mind a huge amount if he ate this one. He sighed when his mind came back to the blue dragoness, and he went back to the time when they had met.
'Saphira,' he had said, almost hesitantly.
She had growled when he said her name, probably more out of surprise or suspicion then anything. Sharrag had been forced to quickly explain himself before she had attacked him.
'My name is Sharrag, a wild dragon,' he had said, 'I've been looking for you for a while. I want to join you and Eragon in finding a place for a new dragon's nest.'
It hadn't been the full truth, which he had revealed later, but it was close enough to it. Eragon and Saphira had still been a little sceptical but as he travelled with him they had grown to trust the wild dragon. Saphira had been extremely curious about the scars he had grown used to. When he told them about the fight he had they had been a lot more trusting. Eragon tried to heal his neck, even using a few words in the ancient language that he had never heard before, one very powerful, the scars hadn't disappeared and his fire still caused pain. He was getting used to it now.
Sharrag finished the stolen hunt before being startled by a sudden cry of surprise from behind him. Looking around he saw the figure of Eragon himself. The elf-human was staring at him with what looked like surprise and shock. Sharrag nodded his head to him.
"What are you doing here Sharrag?" asked Eragon after he had got over his shock.
'Hiding from Saphira,' said the wild dragon with a grin.
Eragon let a smile play at his lips, "That explains her recent uproar, what did you do this time?"
'Stole her hunt,' he said, looking down at the bloodied mess around his claws, 'I'll make up with her later.'
Eragon laughed, before something seemed to catch his attention. He stared into space. Sharrag guessed that Saphira had finally contacted her rider for help in finding him. A cheeky grin spread across his features making Sharrag frowned. When he realised what the dragon rider was doing he growled.
'Don't you do it,' he said.
"To late," replied Eragon with a laugh.
Sharrag groaned and quickly got up from is feet and sprinted through the castle corridors. If he got to the exit fast enough there was a chance he could get out before Saphira got there. He skidded around the corner, his claws gouging long claw marks into the stone. He smiled when he saw the entrance of the castle completely unguarded. He opened his wings and took to the air, flying towards freedom.
When he passed through the large doors of the castle he realised his mistake to late. A blue heap of scales crashed into his back causing him to be slammed against the stone and get the wind knocked out of him. He quickly reacted throwing her off his back and skittering to his feet. The fight was still in Saphira's favour and it was only a second later when she slammed into his side.
The ball of green and blue scales rolled down the slope and stopped on the edge of the lake, Saphira on top with her claws pressed against his neck. Sharrag struggled a little before realising that the fight was helpless and he gave up, looking up into the eyes of the dragoness above him.
'What did you do with it?' she asked.
He purposefully belched out a green tongue of flame. His neck tingled slightly from the feeling though not enough to hurt him. Saphira's eyes narrowed. However Sharrag new she wasn't extremely upset, if anything she seemed to be getting excited about something.
'You owe me now,' she said, a slight edge to her mental voice.
'I guess I do,' he said, wondering what she had planned.
She got off him allowing the wild dragon to get to his feet. Sharrag shook himself, dislodging some of the dust that had clung to his scales. He looked expectantly at her.
'Follow me,' she said.
Saphira took to the air and Sharrag followed closely behind. He followed her to the top of the largest mountain where they landed on top of a plateau that looked over the whole mountain range. The blue dragoness turned to face him, a glint flashing through her eye. Sharrag felt strange emotions shooting through her, affecting him as well.
'Why are we up here?' he asked her.
He growled in surprise and leapt backwards when she jumped at him, swiping a claw towards him, before leaping black with a playful growl. She started stalking him, crouching low to the ground and her tail swishing from side to side. Sharrag watched her cautiously and a little nervously. The emotions coming from her were hard to read. Happiness, excitement... and something else.
She attacked again, this time with a pounce. She landed on top of him and he threw her off and got down into a ready position. She started stalking him again, her tail swishing from side to side once more. He followed her and for an odd reason the same emotions that she was having began to spiral through him. It felt as if his whole body was heating up.
She attacked again, striking forward with her talons. This time they landed a hit drawing blood in his foreleg. It didn't hurt however, if anything it felt wonderful. He roared at her and struck with his tail, striking her legs and tripping her up. Saphira quickly rolled to her feet and roared back, which was quickly followed by a bolt of blue fire. Before he could think he answered with a bolt of his own. A searing pain shot threw his throat... but he barely noticed it. The emotions swirling through him were too strong.
Saphira roared again and launched herself into the air. Sharrag followed with a roar of his own and shot up with her. They reach out there minds for each they melded into each other, to such a point where Sharrag didn't know whether he was the green wild dragon or the blue rider's dragon. There emotions clashed together causing a storm of feelings to flood through both of the dragons.
They continued into the air, higher then either of them had gone before, past the point of safety, yet they didn't care. The only thing they could feel and see was the flashes of green and blue as the flew. As they reached the peak of their ascent they let out a roar as one. A roar that travelled across the whole of the new mountain range. A roar that would be heard by everyone and everything that could hear. A roar of two dragons.
