Chapter 33: Meeting at Last

A forest flooded into view on the horizon. The same forest that had forced Sharrag into running. He felt a strange feeling in his stomach as he winged his way over the first line of trees. The first time he had flow over the forest his wings had failed, he wasn't extremely confident flying over it again.

'Slow down here Sharrag,' said Levial linking his mind with Sharrag's, 'The barrier should be coming up soon.'

Sharrag turned his head towards the elf, wondering what he was talking about. He did as he was told however and slowed his pace. He looked down at the forest below, watching the animals that ran below. For all its dangers the forest of Du Weldenvarden was the most beautiful place he had ever been to. Now that he thought about it, it was probably magic that kept the place so alive. He found it amusing that something so unnatural could keep a place natural. He grinned at the thought.

'Sharrag stop!' yelled Levial above him.

Not knowing what was happening Sharrag instantly halted his flight, nearly throwing the elves off the saddle. A growl rumbled through his throat as he looked for any sign of danger. Not finding any he looked towards the elves in confusion.

'What's wrong?' he asked.

'That barrier is here,' replied Levial, 'You need to land to pass through without getting harmed. It prevents people or creatures from entering the forest through magical means.'

'Flying isn't magical,' said the dragon confused.

'In part it is,' said Levial, 'If dragons could fly without magic they would have to be a lot smaller.'

Sharrag nodded in agreement, though he had never thought of it that way before. He descended to the ground from a nearby clearing. Once he landed he began to walk forward without any trouble from the supposed barrier at all. When the elves gave the all clear he took off again, though was careful how he flew, in case his wings did seize up on him.

Hours later nothing had happened to his wings besides the slow exhaustion of flying for large amounts of time. Sharrag had a lighter feeling in his heart as he realised he was getting much closer to finally meeting her. He could see through the forest that there were strange buildings built into the trees and the occasional elfish two-leg scurrying through the forest, looking up in slight fear and confusion at the dragon above.

'Stop here Sharrag,' Levial spoke once more, 'We must gain admittance through Gilderien the wise to safely pass into Ellesmera.'

'You elves have a lot of precautions,' mumbled Sharrag with a snort, 'And who is this 'Gilderien'?'

His question was answered as a strange and ancient mind touched his own. Sharrag snorted with surprise and quickly withdrew into the barriers of his mind blocking the presence. The intruder mind pressed gently but forcefully against Sharrag's mind until the dragon thought it better to let it have access. He was glad that the mind only stayed on the fringes of his consciousness.

'Dragon, why have you come here?' it asked.

'I am Sharrag and I have come looking for another,' he answered.

'Do you intend to course any harm or destruction while in Ellesmera?' the mind asked.

'No, I do not,' said Sharrag, a little intimidated by this being who he assumed was Gilderien.

'Say so in the ancient language.'

'I don't know how.'

'Then repeat after me.'

Gilderien said a line in the ancient language, which Sharrag repeated as best he could, thought he found a few words difficult to pronounce. Gilderien was pleased with his efforts and allowed him to pass. The green dragon began to make his way forward once again, and another surprise met him.

Another green dragon burst from the confines of the forest and into the air. Sharrag snorted with surprised and backed up slightly. This other green dragon was smaller then him and lacked the scars he did. It was slimmer as well, and male. The two green dragons circled each other, studying the other.

This other dragon had a rider also. A female elf that looked mildly familiar thought he couldn't think where he had seen her before. She gazed at him with intense eyes, taking in the dragon before her. The other green dragon suddenly began to make its way down to the ground. Sharrag hesitated, before following them to the forest floor.

Sharrag landed after the other dragon. Elves began to appear from varies tree houses to watch the two dragons. Sharrag was slightly surprise to find out he was quite a bit larger then this dragon. He must be no more then five or six months old. Sharrag decided to reach out his mind to the other dragon, and was allowed in, though not to far.

'I am Firnen, dragon of the rider Arya, who are you?' asked the dragon with a surprisingly deep voice.

'Sharrag, Alpha of the Beors,' replied Sharrag, deciding to use a title of his own.

Firnen seemed slightly confused at his reply and looked to the elf woman above him. She leapt of his back and landed between them. Like Nasuada she had the aura of authority surrounding her. Sharrag had to admit she was rather beautiful for a two-leg, and had a green sword tied to her waste, similar to Murtagh's red one.

"Welcome, Sharrag of the Beor Mountains," she said with a small bow before looking at the elves, "Introduce us to your rider."

'I don't have one,' he replied, 'I'm a wild dragon.'

Ayra's eyes widened slightly and she glanced back to Firnen with confusion. Something silent passed between them. Firnen seemed equally baffled and was staring at Sharrag with what seemed like newfound respect. Before Ayra could ask another question Levial and Aradon jumped from his back.

"Your majesty," said Aradon and bowed, "Sharrag agreed to take us here as a favour for helping him defeat a great enemy. None of us have returned without injury, as you can see from Sharrag's scars."

Arya turned her gaze back to Sharrag, "Why have you kept yourself hidden for all these years. You are obviously a bit older then Firnen, maybe even older then Saphira."

Sharrag tilted his head; she knew Saphira as well, 'Where is Saphira?'

Firnen narrowed his eyes at Sharrag's question but didn't challenge him. Ayra glanced back at her dragon before answering the question.

"Saphira and Eragon have left Alagaesia. They left a couple of days ago on a boat with a white sail," she said.

'Where did they go?' he asked.

"If you fly south east of here you will come to a river. Follow that river down to the village of Hedarth and take a left out of Alagaesia. Keep travelling until you find the boat," said Arya, "I'm assuming you want to join Eragon in his journey to find a perfect place for the dragons."

Sharrag held in a growl of surprise at this new piece of information, before nodding his head. If they were going to find a place for dragons then he definitely wanted to be part of it. Why they didn't have it in Alagaesia he didn't know, but he wasn't one to argue. He turned towards the elves Levial and Aradon.

'Do you mind taking this saddle off,' he said, 'I have brought you to Ellesmera and I have no need of it anymore. I need to be off a soon as possible.'

Both elves nodded in agreement. Arya seemed to guess what he was saying and stepped forward.

"Before you leave you should rest for a few hours and eat, gain your strength," she said, "Firnen and I would like to know a bit more about you as well and I'm sure the elves would like to ask a few questions."

Sharrag inwardly groaned at the thought, thought the elf had a point. He was tired and hungry and a meal seemed like a good idea. He nodded towards her. Once the elves took off his saddle he launched himself into the air to look for something to eat.

A few hours later he was lying in front of the elven hall retelling his story for what seemed like the hundredth time. Firnen was especially interested in his account. He had told Sharrag that, besides Saphira, he had never met another dragon in the flesh. The two of them shared what knowledge they had, Sharrag shared his hunting techniques and Firnen shared his knowledge of the ancient language and Eldanuri. Firnen also seemed a little jealous of his mission to find the blue dragoness, thought he couldn't understand why.

Once Sharrag felt he had rested enough he got up from where he was resting and stretched his wings, ready to fly once again. It would be another couple of days before he met up with Saphira and her rider, though he knew where they were now and was more then ready to journey to the new land they were looking for. Before he went however he said his last goodbye to Levial and Aradon.

'Thankyou for helping me,' said Sharrag, gazing down towards them, 'I whish for both you a future worth having. Maybe we will see each other again sometime.'

Levial smiled while Aradon just nodded his head. Sharrag lent forward and touched both their head with his muzzled before launching himself into the sky with a great flap of his wings. He circled around Ellesmera for a while before turning southeast and beginning his journey once again.

* * *

Four days of hard flying later Sharrag spotted something against the horizon. He had been following the river for what seemed like forever and was beginning to think Arya had given him the wrong information. The white sail in the distance raised his hopes again and gave him new energy to his wings.

On the horizon the boat Talìta was making good progress. Eragon was sitting on the deck carving a wooden figure of a dragon with his hunting knife. The elves on the boat were mulling around doing miscellaneous things. The dragon rider was board, and his thoughts were on the elven queen that he had said goodbye to only five days ago.

A sudden swell of emotion from Saphira caused him to look up at the blue dragoness flying above them in confusion. He got up from where he was sitting and walked over to the bow.

'What is it Saphira?' he asked.

She didn't answer and instead flew down beside the boat, 'Get on my back.'

Confused he did as he was told, leaping nimbly from the boat onto her back. Saphira shot to the sky leaving a dozen startled elves behind. Eragon yelped out in surprise as he hurriedly strapped in his legs to the saddle. He was a little angry at his dragon for taking him without him knowing why. He was about to scold her and tell her to fly back when something in the distance caught his vision. An emerald green flicker of dragon scales.

'Is that...' he asked, instantly thinking of Ayra .

'No, that's what I first thought,' replied Saphira, 'But this is a different dragon. It doesn't have a rider and is bigger.'

They circled above the boat waiting for green dragon who was slowly getting closer and closer at a rapid pace. Eragon felt Saphira tense below him, ready to meet this dragon if it decided to attack. Finding another dragon was surprising to say the least.

Sharrag began to slow down as he drew closer to the dragon and rider. He stopped a few metres away, his eyes glued to the blue dragoness in front of him. Neither of them talked for a few moments, confused on Saphira's part and excited and nervousness from Sharrag. Eventually the green dragon spoke one word.

'Saphira.'
