Chapter 32: The Human Queen

A nervous and slightly frightened green dragon padded through the streets of the city of Ilirea, as he now knew it was called. A squadron of soldiers had surrounded him and the queen of the humans was walking in front of him. Angela had a comforting hand on his side and the elves were trailing behind.

As they walked Sharrag kept a constant eye on everything. The city was definitely large enough for a dragon his size to walk around without to much trouble, he just had to make sure his tail didn't accidently sway into a nearby human stool.

Up ahead was a large building that seemed to be where they were heading. It towered above the other buildings in the city, and seemed to be well guarded as well. They passed through a to-large set of gates and into a courtyard. There the dark skinned queen stopped and turned to face the green dragon. With a click of her fingers the soldiers around them dispersed, though Sharrag could see they were ready to attack at any sign of aggression.

Sharrag sat down on his haunches, studying the two-leg in front of him. She was of medium height, long black hair and several long scars covering her arms. There was a sense of authority about her, not that he was surprised, and he found himself impressed that she was able to stare him down with out so much of a blink of fear.

"Sharrag, I believe your name is," said Nasuada, breaking the silence.

Sharrag nodded his head.

"There is a lot I want to ask you," she continued, "You don't mind do you?"

'Depends what the questions are,' he replied to her, slightly glad for the fact she allowed him to enter her mind to talk.

A small smile played at her lips before she asked her first question, "Where have you been this whole time?"

Sharrag tilted his head, 'I hatched in the Beor Mountains and have been living with the Shrrg.'

This small bit of information seemed to surprise her and she frowned, "How long?"

Sharrag hesitated, a little unsure of how long. He knew it had to be longer then a year, but was unsure of how long. He glanced at Angela, who spoke up.

"Two years, a bit more," she said, "He's about the same age as Saphira, maybe a little older."

Nasuada nodded, "Did you know about the war?"

Sharrag wasn't surprised at this question. Every two-leg he had met so far had asked him to either join it or if he knew it. He nodded his head in reply and began to think up the answer to the next question he knew was coming.

"Why didn't you help?"

'I didn't want any part of it,' he said, 'Thought it was hardly my choice in some cases. My primary concern was my pack and everything boiled down to what could I do to protect them. I'm also a Wild dragon. I don't owe loyalty to any two-leg, besides Angela, Levial and Aradon, who have saved my life on numerous occasions.'

Nasuada glanced at Angela and the two elves. Sharrag saw the question inside them, especially when she glanced towards the witch. Angela only smiled at her before turning towards Sharrag.

"Yes, talking about your pack, how are they going?" she asked.

Sharrag smiled at her, 'Well. Talismen has now become Alpha. He has proven himself a smart and resourceful Shrrg. He even managed to kill a shade in single combat.'

Angela whistled, impressed, "That is a story you must tell me. I assume it has something to do with this bashed up state you look in. Last time I saw you, you still had scales. Now you are covered in scars. By the looks of them, you should be dead."

Sharrag nodded, 'Elves a good healers. Levial saved me, though apparently even they weren't sure I could make it.'

Levial nodded in agreement. Nasuada was listening to the talk between them with interest, and bafflement. All different thoughts flooded her head, along with questions, so many questions. Who was Talismen? Who was this supposed other shade? How long had Angela known about this potential asset?

She decided to talk, "How long have you known each other?"

'Almost as long as I have been alive,' replied Sharrag, 'She taught me how to speak, about who I was and how to lead my pack. Everything. Before she came along, I thought I was a mutated green Shrrg with wings.'

Angela laughed, "Yes, it was a strange encounter at that."

Sharrag smiled, beginning to feel comfortable again. It was good to be back with the witch. She had been like a mother to him. It sounded strange but she had taught him how to truly be a dragon. She knew him very well, though he knew hardly anything about her. He looked at the queen, suddenly feeling hungry.

'Is there anywhere I can go hunting around here?' he asked her.

Nasuada seemed to jolt out of her train of thought, "Oh, I'll have something brought to you at once. No need to hunt yourself. I would like to hear your story however, if you wouldn't mind of course."

"Yes, I would like to hear what happened while I was away as well," said Angela.

Sharrag nodded, thought he was surprised. Having food brought to him was not something he was used to. Levial and Aradon made excuses, saying they had someone they would like to talk to. Sharrag nodded and made plans to meet with them later.

A strange four-legged beast was brought to the courtyard. A cow, if his memory of searching Thorn's mind proved correct. He quickly wolfed it down, not realising how hungry he was. Once he had finished his meal he turned once again to the two female humans in front of him.

He decided to show them the story through his own memories then tell them everything with words. So he started with his earliest memory, of the hatchling dragon catching a bird to feed what he thought of as siblings. He didn't show them everything of course, hiding the location of his Shrrg was one thing he made sure to do. His interest in Saphira another. He debated whether to hide the control Sythrel had over him, but decided to it wouldn't hurt to show them. He made special care to hide his true name as well, for that was the one thing that would destroy him if they knew.

Once he had shown them his story even Angela was silent. Nasuada looked almost downcast at what she had seen. Angela looked angry, and guilty as well.

"I'm sorry I didn't come back sooner," she said, "If I had known then..."

'Don't be,' he said, 'It would be unfair for you always to protect me. I'm a Wild dragon after all. I shouldn't even need help from you. I'm glad you helped me as much as you did.'

Angela smiled at him, "You're a hard dragon Sharrag, but soft on the inside. There aren't many other wild dragon's like you."

Sharrag smiled back before looking at Nasuada.

"I guess I owe you an apology as well," she said, "I didn't realise you did so much, and in the end suffered worse then us all. It was unfair of me to judge to soon."

The green dragon nodded, not saying anything else. She had realised her mistake. She would be a better person because of it. Sharrag stretched his wings and let out a long yawn. The sun had now set and the moon was rising. He would get rest for the night before looking for Saphira the next morning. He didn't even know where she was.

'Where is Saphira?' he asked Nasuada.

She seemed rather surprised at his request, "Um, Eragon and Saphira left a week ago. They travelled up to Du Weldenvarden with Firnen and Ayra. They are scheduled to leave Alagaesia soon, if not already."

Sharrag took this new information with alarm and growled. He needed to find them as soon as possible, before they left if he could. Once they left he didn't know if he would be able to find them. He opened his wings and was about to take into the air when the forceful shout of Angela shot through the clearing.

"Sharrag stop!" she shouted, "Think about what you are doing. You need to rest. If I'm not mistaken you just spent the whole of today flying with two elves on your back. If you try to fly through tonight as well by the time you reach Du Weldenvarden you won't have any energy left. I'm not sure about you but I don't necessarily want you to fall from the sky in tiredness."

Sharrag hesitated. The witch had a point but he didn't want to miss out on another chance to see Saphira. If he did he didn't know if he would be able to again. With an annoyed groan he folded his wings and turned to face them again.

'Fine, but first thing tomorrow morning I am leaving,' he said.

Angela nodded, "Good, at least you can still think. I don't know why you are so much in a hurry. We have ways of finding out where they are going, so don't worry to much."

Sharrag nodded again before letting out another yawn. He was very tired. He curled up on the floor. Nasuada said something to Angela along the lines of 'I want to talk to you later' and the two of them walked off. Sharrag sighed and fell to sleep with the image of a blue dragoness present in his mind.

The next morning Sharrag woke up as soon as the sun touched his scales. He got up from the ground below and stretched with a yawn. He saw Levial and Aradon standing nearby and talking. Levial was holding what looked like a large horse saddle and Sharrag got the strange feeling he knew what it was meant for.

"Ah, morning Sharrag," Levial said with a smile, "Angela told us of your plan to leave as soon as you could, so we decided to be ready."

'What's that thing?' asked Sharrag, looking at the saddle.

"A dragon saddle," he replied, confirming Sharrag's suspicions, "You'll only have to wear it until we get to Ellesmera. It's just your back is rather uncomfortable to ride on and wards can only protect my legs for so long. Aradon and I are constantly having to heal ourselves from the wounds caused by your scales."

Sharrag growled slightly at the thought of wearing a saddle. A sudden wonder of why some dragons willingly wore them for large amounts of time confused him.

'Fine,' he said, 'But get it on quickly. I don't want to be hear for longer then I have to.'

The elves smiled at each other and together worked to strap the saddle onto Sharrag's back. Once it was one Sharrag frowned and moved around. It was rather annoying, but he would be able to live with it for a small while.

'Okay, come on, let's go,' he said.

The two elves jumped onto his back and Sharrag shot into the sky. He circled around Ilirea a few times, gaining height, before turning his back on the city. With a flap of his wings, he once again set out to travel over Alageasia.
