Chapter 31: The Human Realms

It took another four months for Sharrag to fully recover from his injuries. For Sharrag those four months went by painfully slow. He couldn't fly for most of it, couldn't hunt either. It was driving him insane. He had sent the other Shrrg back to there own territories for it was too hard to feed so many of them at once. Thorn and Murtagh had been a large help however, and the red dragon had become a good friend to him. They often talked to pass the time or showed each other different skills that they had learnt over the past two years.

Fire had also been a problem. As Levial had said it did hurt if he tried to breath fire, but only in large amounts. He could breath a puff of it without to much pain, enough to burn someone or start a small fire. It still wasn't what he was used to, but he was slowly getting used to the fact.

After the four months he stood himself in front of the Shrrg, his pack. A new litter of pups had been born and the one pup that had survived the enchanted wolf's attack was now old enough to help with the hunt. Talismen had grown a bit as well, even if he did have a permanent limp he could still run just as fast or fight just as strongly as the other wolves.

Sharrag sighed as he thought about what he would say to them. He was going to leave for the human cities, to find Saphira. The problem as with this was, he didn't know if he would return. He groaned inside before spreading his mind out to the Shrrg.

'Talismen, Tay'el, Siserl, Craves, Seriah, Tae, Brice, Fang and of course Terra,' he said, the last name was the newly grown pup, 'As you well know I am leaving soon. Another trip to find Saphira.'

The five older wolves understood what he meant, where as the four younger ones had no idea. Terra whimpered a little. She was an innocent wolf, and the thought of her Alpha leaving her scared her.

'What I haven't told you is I may not be coming back,' he said, casting his eyes to the ground.

This statement did cause a bit of surprise. A chorus of 'Why's' and 'You can't leave Sharrag' and 'What would we do without you' came from the wolves. Even the two elves were a little surprise at the sudden statement for the green dragon. The only two who weren't were Thorn and Murtagh, who already knew of Sharrag's plans.

Sharrag waited for them to settle down before giving his explanation, 'I long to be with my own kind. I have spent most of my life not even knowing how other dragons act or hunt or react to each other. You are my family, but it is time I left. A dragon leading Shrrg isn't the best for me or for you. You should learn how to survive without me. Talismen will take my place as Alpha,' he smiled at the wolf, 'As he has proven himself as a good leader and a great friend. I may visit you from time to time, but now it is time for me to leave.'

He looked at them all in the eye, waiting for a chorus of protests to arise again as they tried to force him to stay. To his surprise Talismen stepped forward, looking towards his Alpha.

'We'll miss you Sharrag,' he said, 'And I will try to live up to what you have shown us.'

Sharrag nodded at him. One by one the members of his pack stepped forward, wishing him well on his journey. He felt a mixture of emotions from them. There was worry, surprise, dread and also a little bit of excitement. He knew they would do well. They were the smartest Shrrg in the Beor Mountains. They had big advantages over the other Shrrg and Thorn and Murtagh had agreed to take watch over them, but not interfere.

"Hey Sharrag," said Levial, walking up to the dragon, "I'm a little surprised that you are leaving, but would you mind taking is with you. I mean, we were going to leave as well once we were sure you were well enough, and walking will take far longer then flying."

Sharrag laughed and nodded towards him, 'I will. You have earned it for all the help you have given us. Without you and your brother we would all be dead.'

Levial smiled thankfully. Aradon also nodded his thanks.

'Well, get on my back,' he said, 'I don't want to waist a moment more.'

The two elves jumped nimbly onto his back and Sharrag shot to the air with a roar. The Shrrg watched him go with sadness in there hearts. They still couldn't believe there Alpha was leaving. Sharrag stopped and hovered in front of them. He glanced over at Thorn and Murtagh.

'Take care of them,' he said, before flying off into the sky.

* * *

It took a couple of days to go over the mountains. He went the same way he usually did, high in the sky. The elves were forced to cast spells to prevent themselves from freezing and be able to breath cleanly up in the air. Sharrag was used to the high altitudes and didn't need help to stop himself freezing. He still had fire in his belly, which kept him warm.

As he passed over the last of the mountains He felt his heart jump. Flat land for miles. He was glad he had the elves to tell him where to go. He had studied maps that Murtagh had given him, but he hardly understood what they meant. Eventually Murtagh had given up on him and just pointed him in the general direction.

Once they passed through the mountains it didn't take long for him to find the first human city. As he flew over it he looked down with interest. The city looked crowded to him. Two-legs were hurrying around the place as quick as they could go, making Sharrag wonder what they were doing. A few of them saw him up in the sky and stared, seemingly in disbelief.

He passed over the city and continued on his way. As night descended upon them he landed near a lake to sleep for the night and let the elves have some relief from sitting on his back for so long. He watched them stretch their legs and utter healing spells to heal the scars that seemed to be covering their legs.

Sharrag frowned when he saw them and shrugged before settling down and closing his eyes. He was exhausted from the flight and needed all his energy for the day ahead. The elves told him if he continued at the speed he was going at they would reach Uru'baen by the end of the next day.

The group woke early the next morning. Sharrag caught himself a few strange creatures that looked edible, even if they were smaller then a Feldunost. Deer, one of the elves called them. They tasted good enough, though didn't fill him up as much as he would want, but it would have to do.

The dragon and the elves took to the sky again after they had eaten. Sharrag spent the day studying the new landscape with interest. It was mostly flat, with the occasional set of hills. They were small forests, not like what was in the Beor Mountains or the forests of Du Weldenvarden. There were also large paths made from stone that wound there way through the countryside like a giant snake. The animals were a lot smaller as well. He did see one pack of wolves, which seemed to be less then half the size of a Shrrg, and strange creatures that the humans seemed to fence in for unknown purposes.

He could feel the elves' interest in the world as well, and when he asked them they revealed that they rarely went to these lands, and found human practices rather strange and interesting.

As the sun started to come down on there third day Sharrag spotted something in the distance. Another human city, yet this one was far larger then the other ones he had passed through.

'There's a city,' he said to the elves, 'And a big one as well.'

'Where?' asked Aradon through his mind.

'Just over there,' he said, 'On the horizon.'

'Uru'baen!' he said, 'Keep going, we are almost there.'

Sharrag smiled and pumped his wings a little harder, ignoring the exhaustion piecing his wings. It took another hour to reach the city and by then the sun was sinking into the horizon. Let out a sigh of relief as he began to circle around the city, searching for the any sign of Saphira. Not seeing her he felt a little worried and began to descend towards the city. He saw many two-legs rushing towards the walls of the city with bows and arrows on there back.

'Are they going to attack me?' he thought to himself, a little worried. He didn't mean any harm.

He flew lower and stretched out his mind to the people below, 'I come in peace. I'm just looking for another dragon. Have you seen her?'

A few of the humans on the battlements cried out in alarm as the dragon touched their minds. He felt there worry and instantly withdrew, afraid that they would definitely fire at them. He needed someone he could talk to that wouldn't be so afraid of him. Looking around he found his answer as a familiar presence touched his own mind.

'Angela?' he said, recognising the mind almost instantly, even if he hadn't seen the human in over a year.

'Sharrag, it is you!' replied the witch with surprise, 'What are you doing here?'

'I heard the war was over, and came searching for the blue dragoness,' he replied.

He felt amusement come from Angela and came the closest a dragon could to a blush, 'But the two-legs below seem like they'll shoot at me if I'll try to land.'

'They won't, I've already told them you mean no harm. Land in the city centre. There should be enough space for you there,' she said, showing him an image of the city centre.

He twisted in the air and flew downwards towards the city, landing where he had been told. Already a few hundred humans had gathered there, the soldiers in the front with drawn weapons. Sharrag looked at them warily; ready to take off again in a moments notice. His wariness vanished as he spotted Angela pushing her way through the crowd of watching humans. She broke free and walked over to him.

"My, my, you have groan. What happened to you?" she said, noticing the numerous scars across his body, "You weren't this bashed up when I last left you."

'Long story,' he said with a smile, nudging her with his snout. He had missed the witch.

Aradon and Levial slid of Sharrag's back, gazing to the crowd. Another elf pushed its way through the crowd, greeting them with there own native language. Sharrag snorted and turned back to Angela.

'Why is there so many two-legs here?' he said with confusion.

"It's a city, there is probably close to ten thousand people here," she replied, "And it seems more are coming."

Sharrag looked around, a groan coming from within him as more people appeared around the city square. He didn't like being surrounded by so many of them. It made him feel uncomfortable. With Shrrg you could easily relate with them and get them to do what they are told. Two-legs were a different matter entirely. Angela noticed his discomfort and turned towards the people.

"Alright, you've seen him, now please leave," she said, "Wild dragons tend to burn people who annoy them."

Sharrag snorted slightly, knowing it was not true. It worked however and quite a number of people left as quickly as they could. Sharrag sighed in relief, though the number of people still got on his nerves. A disturbance to the right caused him to look around with surprise.

"You majesty, please stay with us," came a voice from within the crowd.

A dark skinned human revealed herself from the crowd, brushing down her coloured robes and looking over at Sharrag with surprise.

"Angela, what is the meaning of this?" she said.

"Ah yes," replied Angela, "Sharrag, meet the high queen of the empire, Queen Nasuada."
