Chapter 3: Dragon

The Green Shrrg flew lazily through the air as he scouted the land below. He had noticed an increasing amount of the two-legged creatures come through here lately. He was getting nervous. It was unusual for them to come in such large movements.

He banked and curled around a mountain. His pack had moved dens since the previous Alpha had been defeated. There was a safer place in mountains, a small cave large enough for him and the pack to live in for a while. Of course, he was still growing. It had been nearly a month since the fight with the Alpha and he had nearly doubled in size. He was growing to the size of one of the feared Urzhad.

Spotting a rather large Feldunost he decided that an early dinner wouldn’t be out of the question. He swooped down and picked it up like a hawk does to a mouse. It bleated in utter fear and tried to kick the scaled wolf but to no avail. He killed the goat with a quick bite to the neck.

He saw his cave and flew down to it, dropping the Feldunost on the floor. The Shrrg cubs instantly went for it, digging in pretty fast. The other Shrrg were lazing around. Life with the green Shrrg as their leader was very lazy. Hunts were easy and the cubs were well fed.  The only thing they really needed to fear was the two-legged creatures that came by every so often, but even they would hardly stand a chance against their leader.

The wolves greeted him with a small nod. The mind connection between the Shrrg’s and their scaled leader was also helping the gain intelligence, some sought of consciousness. This would be the cause of much confusion and surprise in the future.

The green Shrrg sent an image to the rest of the group of a small group of two-legged creatures in the forest. These were taller then the rest and they wore strange sought of clothing. It looked like it was made from metal. Maybe they had something to do with the increased of movement of the smaller two-legged creatures.

He lay down next to them. They stayed like that for a few minutes, just watching the cubs play on the rough surface of the cave. Suddenly one of the Shrrg growled. The green leader looked at it with a tilted head, confused.

He stretched his mind out to the wolf and looked at what she had sensed, and let of his own growl. The humans he had seen before were coming up to there cave. He sent out his mind, trying to find them and scare them away. When he did he sent them fearsome images of some of his mind created monsters. The two-legs didn’t even flinch. In fact, something attacked his mind back in return. He growled in surprise and was instantly on his feet. The presence in his head began to spear through his conscious, causing him to roar out in agony. The Shrrg looked at him worriedly and backed away, trying to find the invisible threat.

The green Shrrg shook his head and tried to get away from the horrible thing in his head, but it just kept on going deeper and deeper. It took control of his mind and suddenly, against his will, he began to move out of the cave. He growled and tried to fight but no matter how hard he physically pushed he couldn’t get rid of the presence.

He struggled out into the open and down the hill. Now he could smell the two-legs, but whatever was in his head was keeping him from attacking with his mind as well. It wasn’t exactly painless either. Every so often a sharp spike of pain jolted down his body, through his very essence.

Eventually he came to a clearing, and was glad that the other Shrrg hadn’t followed him, because there was a group of humans, twenty, all staring at him with wide eyes. Quite a few of them had their mouths open wide in disbelief.

“Is that…” said one.

“No it couldn’t be.”

“But it is,” said another one, seemingly more confident then the others.

He had a grey hood covering his head and a cloak covering the rest of his body. The only thing he could see of his face was the blue eyes. They stared at the Green Shrrg with a blood lust.

“A dragon,” said the taller-then-normal-two-leg.

The green Shrrg attempted to tilt his head, but the mind in his own stopped him.

“But isn’t the one we are looking for blue?” asked another two-leg.

“Yes, but it looks like we found another one.”

“The king will be pleased?”

“Oh, he will be more then pleased. It will be especially easy to get this dragon to join us because he can’t even shield his mind.”

The green Shrrg listened helplessly. He couldn’t understand a word the two-leg’s were saying. It was a different language to the one of the short two-legs. He still couldn’t move a muscle, or his mind. He had never come across an enemy that could do this before.

There was a sudden cry from the side, and all the two-legs fell to the floor, dead. The green Shrrg’s mind was instantly freed and he stumbled forward, gasping in surprise. He blinked, before moving his tail and wings, making sure he had full control.

“A thank you would be nice,” said a voice from behind him.

The shrrg spun around, growling. There was another two-leg, different from the others. This one had longer fur on its head. It was shorter then the two-legs that had just died, but larger then the normal ones that wondered around the mountains. It had a strange arsenal of weapons as well, and was exhausted.

He growled at it and began to advance. These two-legs were deadly. The two-leg frowned at the green shrrg and began to back away slowly. It suddenly said something, in another completely different language. The words were laced with meaning and magic, causing the green shrrg to calm down. He could sense that the two-leg didn’t mean any harm.

He reached out his mind to the two-leg, but was stopped. There was something surrounding the two-leg’s mind, almost like a wall. He blinked in surprise. The two-leg smiled at him and laughed.

“You seem confused,” it said.

The green shrrg tilted his head with confusion. He couldn’t make any sense of what it was saying. The two-leg seemed to come to that realisation as well.

“Can you understand me?” it asked.

The green shrrg just blinked. The two-leg nodded to itself, frowning. It looked up at him, and another presence touched his mind. He instantly went into attack mode, growling dangerously.

The two-leg spoke in the strange magic-laced, language again. He calmed down and let the two-leg enter his mind. Images started to flash through his head, from the two-leg. He realised it was trying to communicate.

He formed a question in his head and sent forth a picture of the two-leg. It sent him back a few images of it working in a strange building with strange plants and a furred creature that could change into a smaller two-leg. It showed him images of large cities filled with more of the larger two-legs and the feeling of hate towards them. He watched the images and the feelings pass through with an understanding expression. He felt like he knew her now, and he found out it was a her through the images.

She smiled at him again and sent a question to him, accompanied with his own image. He showed her his pack of Shrrg and the fight he took with Alpha and the Urzhad, showing her that if she tried to fight him he wouldn’t be easy to kill. She understood perfectly.

He sent her an image of them walking to his cave and started to trot there. The two-leg followed eagerly. She seemed very interested in the proceedings, and he had a feeling that there would be many more questions asked.

They reached the cave and he sent the wolves inside an image of her, telling them not to attack. The two of them walked inside, and was met by the three adult Shrrg and there cubs. They were looking at their leader and the strange looking two-leg with interest. Not many of them had seen a two-leg over four feet tall.

The green Shrrg looked down at the two-leg, sensing her extreme interest and slight wariness. He was surprised that he couldn’t sense and fear though. She seemed utterly confident that no one could hurt her. One of the wolves growled, and he growled back, telling them again not to attack.

“Never seen a dragon raised by Shrrg before,” mumbled the two-leg, “Let alone lead a pack of them.”

The wolves and their leader all looked towards her in interest, trying to make sense of what she had said. There weren’t any warnings in the sounds; just a questioning feel and the interested look on the two-leg’s face. One of the pups walked over to her and sniffed at her feet. She knelt down slowly and put a hand on the pup’s head. She spoke in the strange language again, and the wolves around her instantly settled down. Now they definitely knew that she meant no harm.

She looked over at the green Shrrg, and he could sense a question coming from her. She reached into his mind and showed him a picture of himself, and he could sense that she was wondering if he knew what he was. He sent her back what was a effectively a ‘no’.

The two-leg seemed surprised, and laughed. She showed him an image of another creature like him. This one was bigger and was white. Something was coming out of its mouth, and it was hot, very hot. It looked like fire, but it couldn’t have been because fire wasn’t white.

She showed him another picture. This one was an army of his species. They had two-legs on there backs. They had swords and fire in there hands and they were smiling fiercely. The winged creatures below them were covered in steel, and they looked more dangerous than he himself had ever looked. He was however looking for something in particular. There weren’t any Shrrg around them, or on the ground.

He sent her a picture himself with the wolves and than the image of the creatures, basically asking ‘where were their packs?’ She smiled and then sent him another image of himself again, followed by the image of the wolves all by themselves. He wasn’t one of them. She sent him an image of him again, this time followed by a word. Dragon.

‘D… dragon,’ he repeated in his head, ‘Dragon!’

The two-leg nodded. The green dragon growled in pleasure as he repeated the word over and over in his head. He had found out what, and who, he was.
