Chapter 16: A True Name

Sharrag fought to ignore the pain shooting through his body as he plummeted from the sky. As far as he could tell he was loosing quite a substantial amount of blood and was feeling a little light headed. He just hoped he was able to keep fighting once they landed.

Just before he hit the trees he opened his wings and came to almost complete stop. He powered forward just enough to avoid being hit from above by the red dragon. It crashed through the trees with enough force to knock a few of them down. Sharrag smiled and quickly followed the red dragon to the ground, covering it with fire. It snarled and tried to get up, but Sharrag forced it to the ground by landing on top of it, and jumping off again. In the few seconds they were distracted he sent a message out to his wolves to say they had landed, and it was time to attack.

He quickly jumped off the red dragon’s back when he felt the bight of the rider’s blade in his belly once more. As he landed on the ground his right foreleg collapsed under him causing him to growl in pain. The red dragon shook itself and looked at him with a growl. Sharrag limped backwards, hoping that his Shrrg would get there soon. He wouldn’t be able to fight for long without them.

The red dragon roared at him and produced a stream of flame. Unable to avoid Sharrag threw his wings up to protect himself. He felt the heat pass over him and growled in pain. Luckily his wings were able to withstand the fire and didn’t hurt too much, but it was still painful.

The flames stopped and were quickly followed with a pounce from the red dragon. It crashed into Sharrag, knocking him over. Before he could get up again the dragon pinned him down a snarled, its claws around his neck. Sharrag struggled weekly to get out from under it but he couldn’t. He snarled at tried to bite the red dragon but the way he was pinned prevented him from doing so. Suddenly something slammed into his mind causing him to focus his attention there instead. He shielded his mind with the image of green fire, preventing the forces around his mind.

The sharp blade of the rider’s sword was suddenly set against his neck. He growled.

“Open your mind dragon, or Thorn and I will open your throat,” it said with malice.

Sharrag snorted and reinforced his mind even further, though he felt he wouldn’t be able to last much longer under the onslaught. He could count five minds attack his own. He guessed two of them were the dragon and rider; the other three however were a mystery. They felt like dragons, yet they felt different at the same time. He growled at thrashed, trying to get out from under them. The five minds were all tearing his barriers away slowly. The sword was pressed a little harder against his throat.

“Open your mind,” snarled the human again.

Sharrag growled in defiance, not daring to move his head even a little more in case the sword actually punctured through the soft scales of his underbelly. He almost did open his mind there and then. He didn’t exactly want to die, but the small sound of feet patting against the forest undergrowth stopped him. He smiled.

‘About time,’ he thought.

The sword suddenly disappeared from his neck as the human was thrown off the dragon’s back as by a wolf the size of a horse. The two landed a few metres away. The red dragon, Thorn, snarled in surprise. Sharrag used the confusion to his advantage and threw the red dragon off of him. He quickly got to his feet and spread his wings and roared. The other four Shrrg flew from the forest in streaks of grey.

The human managed to get up from the collision, gritting his teeth in annoyance. He quickly jumped backwards as one of the wolves struck at him with a sword. He blocked the next stroke. Sharrag smiled as he saw the confusion covering his face. It wasn’t every day he was attacked by Shrrg capable of using weapons.

Thorn rolled to his feet snarling. He turned towards Sharrag, his tail lashing around. Sharrag jumped at him, ignoring the pain in his stomach. The two dragons went rolling head over heals, snarling and lashing at each other. Sharrag was the bigger of the two but he had been badly injured already. Thorn however only had a few scratches covering his body.

They rolled to a stop. Thorn swung his tail around, battering Sharrag in the head causing the dragon to growl. He bit Thorn around the neck, bighting hard. The younger dragon roared in pain and unleashed his fire down Sharrag’s underbelly. Sharrag screeched in pain and backed up, smashing his claw against Thorn’s maw.

Both dragons backed up, getting over the pain they had just been through. Thorn’s neck was covered in crimson blood and a few of his teeth were missing. Sharrag’s wound’s had been badly burnt but the up side was he had stopped bleeding.

Three Shrrg were now circling the human, running at fast speeds. The human was confused. He had never seen anything like this before. Maybe Shrrg with weapons he could handle but they also had wards protecting them from magic, and whenever he reached out to attack one of the Shrrg with his mind another mind attacked his.

He jumped out of the way as one of the Shrrg came in towards him, deflecting the blade with his sword. His wards stopped another sword that came from behind, but the force of the attack caused him to stagger. These wolves were as big as horses and nearly twice as strong. Every time his wards were hit he would loose the amount of energy it took to block a dragon’s tail.

The human confused Talismen as well. Never before had the Shrrg had to trade blows with a human that could withstand them. It was much more skilled and coordinated then most of the soldiers and also attacked there minds which was making some of the Shrrg make hasty decisions. They were lucky they had trained in mind combat with Sharrag.

Talismen did a sudden charge, running to the side of him before jumping back to avoid his blade. He was getting exhausted and the Shrrg knew that he would soon fall.

Suddenly the human seemed to stand upright and took a huge sigh. His energy restored. He quickly jumped out of the way of another wolf, before striking quickly, hitting the wolf in the back of the leg. A ward stopped the blade but the Shrrg still yelped in surprise at the small loss of energy. The human let out a small smile, this would be hard but he could win this fight.

The two dragons clashed once more snarling and clawing at one another. Sharrag couldn’t move his right foreleg without it causing him extreme pain but his fire, teeth and left foreleg made up for that. The red dragon falling back. Sharrag could tell he wasn’t used to fighting with such ferocity. Slowly he began to fall back.

Thorn shot a fireball at the green dragon, which jumped to the side and attacked with both mind and body. Thorn dodged left and bit Sharrag’s shoulder causing him to roar in pain. Sharrag tried to bight down on Thorn’s neck but the red dragon was quick and had already moved out of the way. He hit Thorn with his tail and struck him with his wing. The red dragon stumbled backwards and Sharrag turned and pounced towards him, knocking him over.

Thorn growled in annoyance and struck Sharrag’s wounded leg. The dragon roared in pain and felt himself being flung into another tree. The forest lit alight again as red fire burned through the forest and engulfed the green dragon. He roared in pain and rolled out of the torrent and answered with his own blast of green fire. It passed harmlessly over Thorn but it gave Sharrag a chance to get back to close range.

He crashed into Thorn again, knocking him over and landing on top. He managed to pin down Thorn’s forelegs this time so he couldn’t attack back. For a moment the two dragons stared at each other, hate in Thorn’s eyes and anger in Sharrag’s. He still had no idea why this blood red dragon had attacked him but he knew that he wouldn’t let it beat him, no matter what. Thorn seemed to have the same thought process about not being beaten and suddenly opened his maw and bathed Sharrag’s face in fire.

The green dragon screeched in pain and fell backwards, allowing Thorn to get up and tackle Sharrag to the ground. He place his claw against Sharrag’s throat so he couldn’t breath fire and pinned down Sharrag’s good leg. Sharrag roared and tried to struggle but stopped when he felt one claw against his throat. A mind suddenly attacked his own.

Talismen watched as Tay’el was forced out of the battle. Her protective field had finally been broken by the human’s blade. Her hind leg had been injured. She limbed to the forest to watch the fight from a distance, annoyed that she couldn’t join in herself.

The human seemed to never run out of energy and Talismen was feeling himself getting warn out. Wolves didn’t have an extreme amount of stamina and slowly the wolves were getting warn out. It didn’t help that several different minds were attacking their own. He was finding it hard to concentrate on so many things at once. None of the Shrrg had been broken yet but it was only a matter of time.

Talismen scanned the human for any sign of what these things were. Not finding anything he looked back at the fight his Alpha and the red dragon were fighting. His gaze came upon a pack on the red dragon’s saddle. He narrowed his eyes and charged towards the two fighting dragons. As Sharrag was pinned down he leapt at the red dragon, the sword in his mouth passing through the straps off the bag.

Sharrag feel the mind attacking his own suddenly falter and Thorn growled in pain. He took the opportunity and attack Thorn’s mind with his own. He was surprised to find that the dragon’s mind shield wasn’t extremely strong. He smashed against them and pushed as hard as he could. Thorn roared as his mind barriers cracked and then broke. Sharrag forced himself into the red dragon’s mind, quickly going through all the dragon’s memories.

He saw a grey throne room. A black dragon nearly ten times the size of him. A human that controlled him with a word. He saw hundreds of round gems that contained the souls of dragons. The intense love for the human called Murtagh. The hate he felt for the dark king. All this passed through Sharrag’s mind as he dove further into the red dragon’s consciousness.

‘Get out of my mind! Get out! Get OUT!’ cried the red dragon now that they could communicate.

Sharrag ignore him and delved further and further until he reached the dragons very being. At the very centre there was a phrase. A phrase in the language of magic that held Thorn’s very being. It was a phrase that the dragon would rather die then give to anyone. From the information Sharrag had gathered before he knew that this phrase was something that he could use against the dragon.

He said the phrase in the dragons mind and the dragon shook, both physically and mentally. He roared in sorrow as his true name was said.

‘Stop,’ said Sharrag, and said the phrase that was full of hate, love and sorrow, ‘Get your human and leave. I understand now. I wish no harm on you, but I can’t let you enslave me. Leave.’

The red dragon roared and stumbled off Sharrag, moaning and whimpering trying to resist the calling of his true name. Sharrag growled and roared the name in his head.

‘Leave, get you’re human and leave! Never come back!’

Thorn roared again and took to the wing, flying towards Murtagh. He picked him up and flew upwards into the sky, flying as fast as he could. Sharrag let out a sigh of relief and lay his head down on the ground. The Shrrg watched as the dragon left. They walked towards Sharrag. Talismen tilted his head and pawed the ground near Sharrag’s head.

‘What happen?’

Sharrag sighed and looked into the sky, ‘A true name. The power of a true name.’
