A Boring Library Conversation
I actually went to class this time, instead of skipping. Usually I would've gotten detention, but my teachers were so traumatized by Faith's murder that they forgot. Thanks, Faith!
Class ended early because Mr. Irrelevant had a mental breakdown in the middle of a lecture, and I took the opportunity to go to the library without anyone noticing.
Xander and his sister were already there, with several books laid out in front of them. They were mostly about murder mysteries, but one of them was open to a chapter called Fanfiction Clichés And How To Stop Them that Xander seemed especially interested in.
"My dear brother already told me everything." Xanny grinned at me as I sat down next to her. "So you think the culprit is Nathan, huh?"
"Well... yeah." I responded, shrugging. "I mean, he's the only one besides Mr. Irrelevant who has a realistic reaction to everything that's been happening so far, so he has to be important to the plot in some way. And he just seems like someone that the author would forget about." A thought suddenly struck me.
I should probably tell them about my dreams. I thought uneasily. They honestly felt more like prophetic visions than regular dreams, but that couldn't possibly be the case. That would be too far fetched, even for a crackfic. Still. I should let someone know, in case I'm going crazy.
But something held me back. My inner Main Character Instincts™ stopped me from sharing anything that could possibly be important to any intelligent side characters who might be able to figure it out.
Xander pulled out a notebook that had all the suspects' names written in them. I leaned over to read:
———
Nathan - extremely suspicious, supposedly befriended Faith a few months before her murder
Generic Name 1 and Generic Name 2 - a clue points towards them
Will - complete jerk who might kill someone for attention, used to date Faith
The janitor - I have no idea but Xandra thinks he's suspicious
———
"He is very dubious." He said slowly, examining his notes. "I'm certain that he was hiding something when I talked to him. I think..." He paused for dramatic effect.
"I think we have to confront him somewhere secluded." He revealed. Xanny gasped sarcastically, and he glared at her.
"Normally I wouldn't suggest this kind of thing, but we don't really have any better options." Xander went on. "Nathan's our primary suspect right now, but he doesn't seem too willing to be truthful with us."
"Well, duh." Xanny leaned back in her chair and rolled her eyes. "If he really is the killer, then of course he's gonna be a huge liar."
I was pretty hesitant on the whole idea. Since I'm a Relatable Protagonist™, I'm not a huge fan of confronting people. But I also wasn't a fan of staying behind and missing out on plot drama. I'm a main character, dammit, I need to start acting like one!
"Nathan's in the music club." Xander said, ignoring his sister. "We can wait until he's alone in the music room and then try and talk him into telling us whatever he's been hiding."
"Sounds like a plan." Xanny giggled. I nodded in agreement, wondering when the author would stop writing filler chapters and actually move onto the interesting, action-packed parts of the story. Seriously, this whole plot has been going on for the past eight chapters. And it doesn't even have anything to do with the first couple of parts. Where did the whole thing about waffles versus pancakes go?
Then I decided to shut down my train of thought before the author could glide down from the heavens and slap me across the face.
A/N: like Sam said, these past couple of chapters have been pretty boring and mostly just filler, as a way to bridge towards the more interesting parts. i promise the next chapter will be much more exciting!
