Training Wheels
Dylan was brought home and Stevie made a room up for him downstairs so he wouldn't have to tackle the large staircase just yet. Everyone fussed over him, even little Iris who was constantly giving him cuddles and kisses. He greeted his little sister with a kiss on her cheek once he had lowered himself onto the large sectional couch. He winced and Stevie had to look away before she was overcome with emotion. He was a strong kid, she knew that, but it was hard to watch her son struggle with all of this. Iris's blonde curls were ruffled by her brother and he laughed when she reached out a chubby hand to touch his cheek.
"Looks like she missed you, Dylan" Callie says, carefully sitting on the couch near him.
"Did you?"
"Of course I did. We're twins. It was like the other half of me was gone."
"That's sweet but you're gonna make me yack with all that mushy lovey mom stuff!"
"Hey!" Stevie exclaimed, feigning offense. "I'm allowed my moments of mushy lovey mom stuff, especially now."
"Next time I almost knock my block off, I'll ask Dad not to call you" Dylan joked.
"There better not be a next time, mister." she playfully scolded, pointing a finger a him. "Now is there anything I can get you? Water, juice, one of those sports drinks you always have around?"
"I guess a Gatorade or something. A blue one"
"Coming right up" she says, leaning down to kiss her son's head. "It's so good to have you home" She leaves to go to the kitchen, pouring his drink into a glass with ice then returns to him. He nods his gratitude and takes a sip, sitting it on the table.
"Steph, can I talk to you?" Lindsey said, getting Stevie's attention. She nods and follows him to a separate room in the house.
"Yes?" She asks.
"I, I've been thinking..." Lindsey begins and instantly her eyes fill with tears. It sounded ominous and frankly, it frightened her. They were doing well, was he having second thoughts?
"Don't say it" she begs.
"Don't say what?"
"Don't say it's over."
"Honey..." he says, pulling her into an embrace. "I wasn't going to say that. God, I've already lost you before and I won't lose you again. No matter what happens in the future, we can get through it. We've talked about this"
"I know" she says, sniffling.
He pulls back from her and looks into her watery eyes, stroking the side of her face. "All I wanted to do was ask you out, away from our eavesdropping children" He says with a chuckle.
"Ask me out?"
"A date. You and me. We can even wait until the kids go to bed and do it here since I know you will be nervous about leaving Dylan" He smiles at her. "What do you think?"
"Perfect"
"I want to reconnect. I want to get away from this Brock mess and just forget. We have fought way to hard for this to be the end."
She didn't know what to say, everything else would have seemed...wrong. She rose up onto her top toes and kissed him softly on the lips. "I love you" she whispers.
"I love you too. Now let's go back out there, make sure everyone is still alive"
When they came back into the living room, it was like Dylan was his normal self. Iris was playing on the floor with a toy and the kids were playing a racing video game, trash talking each other.
"I see you're feeling better!" Stevie says, ruffling her son's hair.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He tells her. "Aw! No fair! You're cheating, Callie!" He shouted.
"Not my fault you can't talk and play at the same time!" Callie said, smirking as she overtook his car on a broad corner. Every time he would speed up and meet her, she would throw out traps.
Lindsey rolled his eyes, slipping an arm through Stevie's waist. "Wanna leave them to it?" He asks
"Sure. Iris's little eyes keep closing. I might put her down with a bottle for her nap."
"Great plan. Meet me in our room when you're done." Lindsey ascended the stairs as Stevie went to the kitchen to prepare the bottle. She was done in no time, appearing in the bedroom doorway faster than he imagined. "Is she out?"
"Like a light" Stevie says.
"Will you shut the door?" he asks.
"Did you want to chat some more?"
"I don't think there will be a whole lot of that" She can see the lustful fire in his eyes. They undressed each other quickly and efficiently, knowing one of their children was bound to interrupt. They kissed frantically, the room becoming hotter with every kiss and brush of fingertips on skin. Making love in the afternoon was always something they loved, going back to their early days as a couple. They could express themselves easily and without judgment and each understood. It was their way.
----
Night came and Dylan went to bed early, being on his pain medication that made him so tired and Callie retired to her room to read. Iris was fed, changed and put down after a story and a song as she was every night. Sleep came easily for the children. Lindsey slipped outside during the bed time routine and placed thick blankets on the grass in their yard. He pulled a small table that usually sat by the patio chairs over to where he had set up the blankets and rummaged around for candles and a lighter. He was careful not to make too much noise, he hoped to surprise Stevie. Once it all was all in place, he pulled dessert from the fridge and plated it, taking it outside as well. It was a warm night, the stars were out and the moon was full. He set up his iPod on the dock and came back inside to wait for Stevie. Minutes later, she descended the stairs and he took her hand, kissing her knuckles.
"Well, hello there, Prince Charming"
"Hello, princess" he said, kissing her again. He led her wordlessly outside and she gasped at the sight before her.
"Oh my gosh! This is beautiful!"
"It's not much but I thought you'd like something intimate" She nodded her approval, sitting on one corner of the blanket.
"And dessert?"
"My, my! Trying to get lucky twice in one day?"
"What can I say? I feel young again when I'm with you."
"You're plenty young." Stevie says. "But I will say, you do get better with age"
"As do you, my dear. Like a fine wine"
They dig into dessert and Lindsey turns on the music. As soon as it begins, he's horrified, switching it off. "Callie's playlist. Let me find something else"
"No, leave it." She tells him.
"It's..." He looks at the artist. "It's some girl dressed like a doll. Melanie..."
"Martinez" Stevie says.
"Ooh, look at you being all modern"
"Shut up" she says, pushing him playfully.
"Fine, I will endure" he says, pressing play again.
Riding down, riding down
My hand on your seat the whole way round
I carry band-aids on me now
For when your soft hands hit the jagged ground
Wheels aren't even touching the ground
Scared to take them off but they're so worn down
Promise I won't push you straight to the dirt
If you promise me you'll take them off first
Love everything you do
When you call me fucking dumb for the stupid shit I do
I wanna ride my bike with you
Fully undressed, no training wheels left for you
I'll pull them off for you
Love everything you do
When you call me fucking dumb for the stupid shit I do
I wanna ride my bike with you
Fully undressed, no training wheels left for you
I'll pull them off for you
"What a way with words" Lindsey says, rolling his eyes.
"If you'd listen, it's actually really beautiful."
"Despite the curse words you hate so much"
"Yes, despite that" she says, smirking at him.
Letting go, letting go
Telling you things you already know
I explode, I explode
Asking you where you want us to go
You've been riding two wheelers all your life
It's not like I'm asking to be your wife
I wanna make you mine, but that's hard to say
Is this coming off in a cheesy way?
Love everything you do
When you call me fucking dumb for the stupid shit I do
I wanna ride my bike with you
Fully undressed, no training wheels left for you
I'll pull them off for you
Love everything you do
When you call me fucking dumb for the stupid shit I do
I wanna ride my bike with you
Fully undressed, no training wheels left for you
I'll pull them off for you
Love everything you do
When you call me fucking dumb for the stupid shit I do
I wanna ride my bike with you
Fully undressed, no training wheels left for you
I'll pull them off for you
Love everything you do
When you call me fucking dumb for the stupid shit I do
I wanna ride my bike with you
Fully undressed, no training wheels left for you
I'll pull them off for you
"Well, now what do you think?" Stevie asked.
"Not bad" he says and Stevie giggles.
"Okay, so it's not your style. You can pick what you want to play now"
"No, it's okay. You know, that song is kind of interesting. It's about trust."
"Exactly"
"Kind of funny how things work out."
"There are no accidents" Stevie says and Lindsey takes her hand, stroking her knuckles.
"You're exactly right. Maybe we were meant to hear it. We have to trust each other and we have to fully invest in each other. We can't make this work if we don't both jump in with both feet. I want that for us."
"Me too"
"I love you, Stephanie"
"I love you too, Lindsey"
"Do you trust me?"
"Always. Do you trust me?" she asks, biting her lip. She was afraid of his answer. She had done something that could have destroyed them yet he was willing to make it work. He sat for a thoughtful moment and she unknowingly held her breath.
"Of course I do." he says finally. "We have both said and done hurtful things to each other but the important thing is that we forgive. Brock took advantage of you and there have been plenty of times where I have too. I'm sorry, Stevie. Let's leave our past in the past and move on" He got up suddenly and went back into the house leaving Stevie stunned. When he came back, he had two glasses of wine in his hands. She smiled up at him and took the glass he had extended for her. He sat down and lifted his glass. "What shall we toast to? New beginnings? Is that cheesy? How about--"
"How about to no training wheels?" she suggests and he gives her the most handsome smile.
"To no training wheels" They each take a sip from their glass then seal their full moon intention with a passionate kiss.
Fully undressed no training wheels for you
I'll pull them off for you
