Their Cell

Lindsey sleepily wraps his arms around Stevie in bed. Early morning sun has not yet fallen into Stevie's room and it's so quiet. They've been together for one month, dating and having a lot of fun together. Now able to openly express their love, they are happier than ever and there hasn't been a single fight. He traced the outlines of her bare curves when he spots something he didn't think he would ever see again. He touches the tender skin over her ribs, accidentally waking Stevie with the contact.

"What are you doing, Linds? Go back to sleep"

"You still have it" he says.

"What are you talking about, baby?"

"Our tattoo."

"It's permanent, of course I do" she says, her eyes closing again. Lindsey touches the tiny indelible outline of a star on his lover's left side and smiles.

"You made an appointment to remove it" he whispers, knowing she can no longer hear. He decides to talk to her anyway. "I'm so happy you didn't" He places a hand over his own star etched into his skin. "We're still connected."

As he lays back down in bed and closes his eyes, memories of them from years ago flood his mind.

1999;

"Are you sure it's not going to hurt?" She asks, hesitant to take her sweater off and let the burly, heavily tattooed artist work.

"It might hurt a little but it's so small it will only take a minute"

"A whole minute of excruciating pain is too much."

"I did mine, are you chickening out?" He teases.

"I'm scared. My parents are going to kill me!"

"Then don't tell them"

"Lindsey!" She smacks his chest lightly, giggling. "Will you hold my hand?"

"Forever.

"But how about right now?" She asks, shaking her hand in midair.

"Of course" he says, taking her hand in his. "Are you ready?" She bites her lip. "It was your idea, you know."

"I know."

"I wanted to do our initials. I would get SN and you'd get LB"

"That was a big hell no" she says and he laughs.

"I like the stars though. Don't be nervous. I'm right here and I always will be" She nods and half way takes off her cardigan sweater to reveal a thin strapped dress that alone, left very little to the imagination. The gun starts to buzz and she looks at Lindsey the entire time as the burning, scratching sensation enters her senses.

"Almost done, little one" The big man says, wiping down her tattoo. She nods, and he goes over it one more time. "Alrighty. Would you like to see it?" He helps her up and they go over to the tall mirror on the wall.

"It's beautiful" she says, admiring it.

"Just like you" Lindsey says, kissing her.

"Can I see them together?" She asks him and he nods, taking his shirt off. "Oh, I love them! I can't believe we did this"

"No one will ever see them but the two of us. We will always be connected. Body, mind and soul" he says

"That's so deep, Linds" The lovers pay for the work and run out to the car. "I want you so bad right now" Stevie says once the doors are shut.

"A little tattoo has got you feeling dangerous?" He chuckles.

"Shut up and take me home" she says seductively, kissing his neck. "That is, if you want me"

"How could I not?" He slams down on the gas making his tires squeal as he peels out of the parking lot for their tiny studio apartment.

2015;

"I hate you, Lindsey Buckingham!" Stevie screams, grabbing anything in close proximity to throw at him.

"You're acting crazy right now!"

"Am I? I just saw you fucking some girl in our bed! It's the middle of the afternoon!"

"First of all, it's not our bed, it's mine. Second of all, we are not together anymore! You have made that clear as day for years now!" He yells.

"Maybe you should have warned me you'd be doing that while I'm trying to gather up your laundry! I was trying to be nice. We've been fighting a lot and our kids have luckily never seen it but I wanted to try and fix this" she says, her voice quieting gradually from a yell.

"Knock next time."

"I will. I never want to see...that... again" she says and he chuckles. "Stop laughing at me!"

"You're adorable." He says, daring to step closer to her. It seemed safe as she had just thrown the last pillow from the couch at him. There was nothing left. "Does it bother you?" he asks.

So I'm saving all my secrets for a deaf man
Blabber on I blabber on
I stare empty at a wall
And make it try to sing along
Carry on I carry on
You're shackled all your pain is stiff
Tattooed lovers they don't like to reminisce
Keep pictures of the people you once loved
In a safe oh in a safe
Oh no you lost the combination
Oh no you have the wrong address
Scribble names unscramble names
Oh you're shackled all your pain is stiff
I know, I know, I know you're planning your vengeance

"What kind of question is that?"

"Just answer it, humor me."

"Of course it does."

"Why? You've had boyfriends."

"I...never mind."

Tattooed lovers they don't like to reminisce
Who knows, who knows, who knows what name they're screaming now
So I'm saving all my secrets for a deaf man
Blabber on I blabber on and on and on and on
Oh no, you lost the combination
Oh no, you have the wrong address
Scribble names, unscramble names

"Talk to me, Stephanie"

"These stupid stars...I've been thinking about getting it removed."

"Wh-what?"

"We aren't together, we have no future and this tattoo haunts me! We will never be able to move on if we don't fully let go."

"What if I don't want to move on?" He asks.

"By the looks of, what's her name? Charlotte? You have moved on." She motioned to the girl now standing behind him wrapped in a bed sheet. She turned around and headed for her room, in tears.

"Stevie!" He shouts after her. He hears the door slam and his shoulders slump.

"We're cursed." Stevie sobs into her plush white comforter on her bed. "I knew it was bad luck."

See this world is not just a ball
Of vagueness you can just bounce off
See this world is not just a ball
Of vagueness you can just bounce off

Lindsey asks the girl to go home. Don't call, don't text, just go. She goes back to his room to find her clothes and within minutes, all traces of her are gone. He goes to Stevie's door, trying the knob but it's locked. She knew he would come to her afterward. That's their game, hurt each other then fall into bed to take the pain away for a moment. He doesn't see her for most of the day, only when he brings the kids home from school. She painted in her studio all night after the kids went to bed and refused to buzz him in. She wouldn't even talk to him through the intercom. She was lost to him that day and most of the next day when she left for her laser appointment. When she came back, he knew their secret marking was long gone and their connection was really broken.

Dear Jane, well I wrote this line to say
Hope you still can recall my name
Dear Jane, I wish everything is okay
Oh Jane, forgive all they may say
Dear Jane, I wrote this line to say
I hope you still can recall my name

Present day;

Stevie's eyes flutter open and she cuddles up to Lindsey. "I couldn't do it" she says, knowing he was now asleep. "I tried to go get it removed 3 times but I couldn't. I loved you then and I love you now. You will always be a part of me" Instinctively he pulled her even further into him, and she kissed his chest, smiling as she too drifted off again.
