Secret

Lindsey has been at work from sun up to sun down for the past week and Stevie has barely seen him. She missed him terribly. She even began trying to figure out her phone so she could text him when he got a spare minute. She told him she had a little errand to run this morning so he took a few hours off for her, choosing to work from home. She was planning a reveal for him so as much as she wanted him to go with her into town to meet with the midwife, she knew that wasn't an option.

She dressed casually in a long black top, leggings and black boots. Her hair was simply down and fell into soft natural waves. Her makeup was minimal but pretty and she felt good about herself when she looked in the mirror. She slung her black leather purse over her shoulder and kissed him goodbye.

"Before I go back, we can have lunch as a family"

"I would love that" she says, kissing him again.

"I love you, angel. See you soon" he says, waving at her from the front door. She gets in her car and turns on her iPod, her favorite thing to do lately since she's finally figured it out with a lot of help from Lindsey and the kids. She heads to her first appointment and she's so excited. She might be able to hear the heartbeat today, and the excitement helps calm her nerves about all the blood work and forms she needs to fill out today.

Back at the house, Lindsey is in his office and Callie checks if the coast is clear. The tall, brunette thirteen year old slinked down the hallway in an all black ensemble, like the cat she was. She ended up in her parent's room, and went straight for the wanted object- her mother's journal. She begins to skim the passages, blushing at some of the confessions.

"Tired, tired, tired...." she says, following the entries down with her black and gold painted fingernails. "Hm...where's the good stuff?" she asks herself.

"What do you think you're doing?"

She freezes in her position. Was she caught? She looks up from her task, relaxing. "Shh, Dylan!"

"Is that mom's? She's going to kill you!"

"Not if you don't tell!"

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
'Cause two can keep a secret
If one of them is dead?

"I won't"

"You have to promise me" she says, her eyes serious.

"You're freaking me out, sis" he says, sitting down with her and she smiles.

"At least I'm not making you sign something in blood. I'm just asking for your word"

"I swear"

"Okay. Have you noticed anything weird about mom, lately? She's taking vitamins and eating extra healthy..."

"Maybe she's trying to lose weight?"

"She's already pretty thin"

"You know how she is. She says she's jealous of us because we're like dad and can eat anything but if she even--"

"If she even looks at cake, she gains five pounds!" Callie finishes, and the kids laugh. "Yeah, that's true but look at this"

Her twin brother, who now has an edgy side-parted undercut hairstyle, leans over the pages but can't make out the handwriting. It seemed rushed. "What's it say?"

She sighs. "Do I have to do everything for you?" she asks and Dylan shrugs. "Fine, she keeps talking about feeling extra tired and that she's had a mysterious illness for... the past 15 entries"

"So?"

"Don't be dense!"

"I don't get it. You're a girl, you get her more than I do"

"That's so close-minded." Callie shakes her head, giving him the same look his mother does.

"Stop doing that" he says and she smirks at him, knowing exactly what she's doing. Her father hates (but secretly loves) how similar she is to her mother too. She's Stevie made over with blue eyes and dark curly hair. "So what does it mean?"

"I want to force her to tell us."

"Tell us what?"

"Oh, Dylan...I think she's pr--" she begins.

"She's what?" Dylan asks.

"Yes, Callie. Enlighten us." a voice says and Dylan turns around.

"Shit!" he says.

"Calliope Emmeline and Dylan Elliot, my very own babies plotting against me. Did you read a word?" She asks, turning her attention to her son. He shakes his head. "Go to your room I will deal with you for the cursing in a minute"

Why do you smile
Like you have told a secret
Now you're telling lies
'Cause you're the one to keep it
But no one keeps a secret
No one keeps a secret
Why when we do our darkest deeds
Do we tell?
They burn in our brains
Become a living hell
'Cause everyone tells
Everyone tells?

"Calliope" Stevie says, sitting on the bed with her daughter. She takes her journal out of her hands and closes it.

"I'm in deep trouble, aren't I?"

"Haven't I asked you not to read my journal before?"

She lowers her head. "Yes, mommy"

"Did you get in trouble last time?"

"No, you just asked me to stop because it invades your privacy and it hurts your feelings"

"But you did it anyway"

"I'm sorry, mommy"

"Why am I so interesting that you have to go behind my back? I am an open book, not my journal. That's private, my inner most thoughts."

"You have been acting different and I wanted to know why"

"I'm here all day and you can't ask?"

"I was scared"

"But not scared at all to sneak into my room?" She asks with a chuckle, lightening the mood. "I'll let you off the hook this time but you do it again when I've begged you to stop twice, you're going to see consequences. Your phone, your television, your little visits with friends...all gone"

"Yes, mommy"

"Can I have a hug?" Callie nods and leans into her mother's embrace, wrapping her arms around her. "I love you."

"I love you too"

Stevie leaves the room and goes to talk to Dylan. She enters the room to see him passed out on his bed. She smiles, shaking her head. "I guess this will have to wait." She hears Callie coming up behind her to go to her room. "You didn't read anything...telling, did you?"

Look into my eyes
Now you're getting sleepy
Are you hypnotized
By secrets that you're keeping?
I know what you're keeping
I know what you're keeping

"Of course not!" Callie says, her voice higher than normal and Stevie knows the truth.

She places her fingers to her lips. "Shh..." she tells her and her daughter gives her a confused look. Was she right?

She watches her mother walk away then goes right into Dylan's room and shakes him awake.

"You'd better not tell her anything!" Callie said.

"What?" Dylan says, still mostly asleep.

You swore you'd never tell
You swore you'd never tell

Got a secret
Can you keep it?
Swear this one you'll save
Better lock it, in your pocket
Taking this one to the grave
If I show you then I know you
Won't tell what I said
'Cause two can keep a secret
If one of them is dead?

"Don't tell anyone, anything. Mom is still acting really secretive and I want to read more....I promised her I wouldn't though."

"Then don't."

Callie crosses her arms. "Hmm...maybe I can get information another way. But don't rat me out"

"I won't." He says, going back to sleep.

Yes two can keep a secret
If one of us is dead
